Ho Maine pyaar kiyaa oy hoy kya jurm kiya

I could call it a bathroom song, because the lady is actually taking bath in this song. But the technical problem is, she is taking bath not inside the bathroom, but in the open, and some people may say she is actually swimming. But more like she is frolicking in water to her heart’s content. So I have decided to call it a waterfall song instead.
Padmini is seen quite enjoying herself getting wet in her sari. I hope the scene was shot in a few takes. In any case, it does appear that the picturisation must have taken place in the summer season and in that case I suppose it was alright to spend as much time as one could inside water. Just thinking about diving in cold water would give most people in India shivers considering how cold it is in India these days in most places, including the place where this scene was shot some 48 years ago.
The music of Shankar jaikishan is quite catchy, and same is the case with Hasrat Jaipuri’s words. In fact, listening to this song a few times made me wanting to listen to this a few more times. The tune was somewhat reminiscent to the tune of “Dil ka hal sune dilwaala” from an earlier Raj Kapoor movie.
At the end of the song, Raj Kapoor innocently appears out of nowhere, catching Padmini unawares. And she dives under the water. Raj Kapoor also dives in, pressing his nose (to hold his breath underwater) and chanting “har Har Gange.”
Despite all those references to the river Ganga in the song as well as in the title of the movie, this scene was not shot on the river Ganga, Not at all. The scene was shot at Dhuandhar falls on river Narmada, near Jabalpur. In fact, many important scenes in this movie were shot in and around the river Narmada near Jabalpur. Jabaplur incidentally was the sasuraal of Raj Kapoor, and that explains his fascination for shooting extensively in Jabalpur.
Of course, all that is in the distant past now. Raj Kapoor, as well as his brothers in law- Premnath and Rajindernath are no more, and their next generation are no longer interested in shooting indigenously. Raj Kapoor at least shot his Ganga scenes in Narmada, in modern days such Ganga scenes could well be shot abroad.
Coming back to the song, I loved listening to this song. It is quite a nice song to listen to.
Song-Ho Maine pyaar kiya (Jis desh mein ganga bahti hai ) (1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
ho maine pyaar kiyaa oy hoy kyaa jurm kiyaa
ho maine pyaar kiyaa oy hoy kyaa jurm kiyaa
in aankhon kaa rang ho gayaa gulaabi-gulaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi-sharaabi
in aankhon kaa rang ho gayaa gulaabi-gulaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi-sharaabi
ho maine pyaar kiyaa …
thar-thar man meraa kaanpe aankh meri sharmaaye
o gore-gore tan par aaj paseenaa aaye
haay kahaan tak dil sambhaaloon
teer saa chubhaa kaise nikaaloon ho
ho badh gayi aur dil ki betaabi-betaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi sharabi
in aankhon ka rang ho gaya ghulaabi ghulaabi …
ho maine pyaar kiyaa…
jab-jab unko dekhoon laaj se main sharmaayi
jab-jab unko dekhoon laaj se main sharmaayi
dheere-dheere aakhir man ki kali muskaayi
dheere-dheere aakhir man ki kali muskaayi
haay karoon kyaa hosh nahin hai
ham kahin aur dil kahin hai ho
ho ban-ban dole umariyaa shabaabi-shabaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi sharabi
in aankhon ka rang ho gaya ghulaabi ghulaabi …
ho maine pyaar kiyaa…
kyaa hain khataayen meri aaj koyi batlaaye
ho kaun se dil ko todaa kaun se dil tadpaaye
pyaar kiyaa hai pyaar ko jaanoon
aur koyi insaaf naa maanoon ho
ho pyaar ki har adaa laajawaabi-laajawaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi sharabi
in aankhon ka rang ho gaya ghulaabi ghulaabi …
ho maine pyaar
ho maine pyaar kiyaa oy hoy kyaa jurm kiyaa
in aankhon kaa rang ho gayaa gulaabi-gulaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi-sharaabi
in aankhon kaa rang ho gayaa gulaabi-gulaabi
haay haay haay dil ki haalat sharaabi-sharaabi

Typical Atul comment 🙂

Nice song, have not seen the movie.
But when I do, I will see the Narmada, remember Jabalpur – and think about you. 🙂
