5168 Post No. : 17137

Today’s song is from yet another Historical movie-Padmini-1948. Like the last post, even this film story is connected with Rajasthan, by coincidence.

The film was made by the Punjab Film Corporation, Bombay – owned by the Producer, Director and Lyricist of this film – Wali Sahab. Music Director was Ghulam Haider and the cast consisted of Mumtaz Shanti (wife of the director Wali Sahab), Ashok kumar, Mumtaz Ali, Maya Devi, Neelam, Sultana, A.Shah and others.

Film Padmini-48 was the second Historical movie in which Ashok Kumar had ‘acted’. The first one was ” Humayun”-1945. In that film, according to Isaq Mujawar, author of several books on old films and artistes,” Ashok kumar was ridiculed by the theatre audience for his feminine acting and running with the war gear on the screen. he looked so funny in that attire that whole audience was laughing loudly at him” (book-Screenplay). Obviously, Ashok Kumar, who had an image of a simple romantic Hero in the Bombay Talkies films with Devika Rani and later with Leela Chitnis, was a misfit in the Historical role. Looks like he did not realise this or did not care for it and accepted the second such film again.

Same case was with Ashok Kumar’s Mythological films. The first mythological film that he acted in was ‘ Savitri”-1937 with Devika Rani as Savitri. Ashok Kumar was still a new actor and this was his only 4th film. He had yet to get branded as a Romantic hero, but the Mythological role of Satyawan did not suit him at all. When one sees some photos of this film, one will be confused as to who is Satyawan and who is Savitri. Even in the photos he looked so odd and awkward. In Spite of this, he acted in another Mythological film ” Uttara Abhimanyu “-1946, with Shanta Apte. Here, he was Abhimanyu and did not suit the role at all due to his age, which was 35 years. Shanta Apte as Uttara was also over 30 years old. Thankfully, good sense prevailed and Ashok Kumar did not act in such films in the Hero’s role thereafter !

In the film Padmini-1948, actress Sultana had done a role. Her sisters Zubeida and Shehzadi had quit films in late 30’s after their marriage, but Sultana continued in films. Sultana, also known as Sultana Razaaq, was one of the earliest film actresses from India and acted both in silent movies and later in talkie movies. She was daughter of India’s first female film director, Fatima Begum. Zubeida (leading actress of India’s first talkie film Alam Ara -1931) was the younger sister of Sultana. The youngest sister was Shehzadi-also an actress. Actress Mehtab (Sohrab Modi’s wife), whose real name was Najma, was the step sister of these girls. Najma was the daughter of Marium, one of the wives of Nawab of Sachin.

Sultana was among the few girls who entered films at a time when it was not considered an appropriate profession for girls from respectable families, let alone Royalty. Born in the Surat city of Gujarat in western India, Sultana was a stunningly beautiful Muslim princess, the daughter of Nawab Siddi Ibrahim Muhammad Yakut Khan III of Sachin State and Fatima Begum. She had two sisters, Zubeida and Shehzadi, both actresses. However, there is no record of a marriage or a contract having taken place between the Nawab and Fatima Bai or of the Nawab having recognised any of her children as his own, a prerequisite for legal paternity in Muslim family law. Actually, the Nawab had 3 wedded wives and Fatima was an ‘ outside’ arrangement.

Sultana was a popular actress in the silent movie era, usually cast in romantic roles. She started her career as an actress in Veer Abhimanyu (1922) film in 1920s and later performed in several silent films. Later, she also acted in talkie movies. Sultana did sexy roles in films and earned a name as “Sultry Sultana”. She acted in 20 Silent films. She continued acting after the Talkie films started and worked in 19 Talkie films. Her last film was ‘ Girdhar Gopal ki Meera’-1949.. She came into limelight when she filed a case against Yassir Hussain Lalji, son of the chief of Bombay Municipality, in 1931, claiming to be his wife and demanding a sum of Rs. 5 lakhs in those days !

When India was partitioned in 1947, she migrated to Pakistan with her husband, a wealthy man named Seth Razaaq. Her daughter, Jamila Razaaq, was also encouraged by her to act in Pakistani films and she produced a film in Pakistan, named Hum Ek hain (1961), written by famous scriptwriter, Fayyaz Hashmi. The film was partly shot in colour, which was rare those days, but it failed miserably and Sultana stopped producing any films afterwards.

Sultana’s daughter, Jamila Razaaq, married the well known Pakistani cricketer Waqar Hasan, who is the brother of filmmaker Iqbal Shehzad. He runs a business under the name National Foods at Karachi. (Author’s note- This is based on information collated from the book ‘Asli Nakli Chehere’ by Vithal Pandya, Blog of P.Kamalakar, 1946 Film Directory, pak.mag site and my notes, with thanks to all)

Another unknown name in the cast is A.Shah. Here is some information on him. An actor who was quite a popular comedian those days was A Shah aka Aziz Shah. He was born in 1910, at Sialkot. He did not have much schooling, except primary education at Lyallpur and at Islamia High School, Lahore. Due to his rich and sweet voice, he used to recite Holy Quran, on farmaish. He wrote poetry also.

He joined Saroj Movietone in 1930, under Mohan Bhavnani as an artiste at Rs.40 p.m. He acted in ‘Shakuntala’-31 and ‘Gul Bakavli’-32. He had to take a 2 year break, due to an illness. Back in Bombay, he worked in the film ‘Fidai Tohid’-34 as a hero. He gave music to the film ‘Gunehgar’-36. He wrote dialogues for ‘Mother India’-38 and ‘Daughters of India’-39. His first comic role was in Ranjit’s ‘Mirza Sahiban’-35. He became famous with his role in Punjabi film ‘Kurmai’-41.

His best role came in ‘Sharada’-42, as Munshi Udharchand Shikarpuri. This was repeated by him in the film ‘Keemat’-46. Some of his 11 films were, ‘Dhandora’-41, ‘Armaan’-42, ‘Sukh Dukh’-42, ‘Kanoon’-43, ‘Sanjog’-43, ‘Geet’-44 and ‘Ek Din Ka Sultan’-45, and Padmini-48.After 1948, he stopped acting and wrote lyrics in films like ‘Raat Ki Rani’-49, ‘Namoona’-49 and ‘Ek Teri Nishani’-49. After this he possibly migrated to Pakistan and we have no further information about him anymore. Baburao Patel of Film India magazine was his fan.( Adapted from Film Directory-46 and pak.mag with thanks.)

Today’s song is from the early career of Geeta Roy when she was new, not very well known and with a fresh melodious voice. The song is very sweet. Music is by Ghulam Haider, who was in a hurry to migrate to Pakistan. He was one of the very few popular and successful MDs in undivided India, who went to Pakistan and did not do that well there. Not only that, he suffered from Cancer and died within 2 years of going to Pakistan. This is in contrast to many other MDs, who were ordinary and not so popular in India, became highly successful, popular and famous in Pakistan Some such examples are Nissar Bazmi, Tufail Faruqi, G.A.Chishti (Babaji) etc etc.

The producer, Director and lyricist of this film was Wali Saheb who also migrated to Pakistan soon after, along with his wife Mumtaz Shanti. Just for information, Mumtaz Shanti’s mother was a Hindu named Shanti and father was a Muslim-Mumtaz Shah. That’s how she called herself Mumtaz Shanti.

I am not giving the story of this film, because the story of beautiful queen Padmini and her Jauhar, along with hundreds of other women, to save their honour from the army of Allauddin khilji is very well known.

Today 8th March, 2022 is the 101st birth anniversary of poet-lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi (08.03.1921 – 25.10.1980).

As per statistics available he has written around 717 to 730 songs in Hindi Films. On our blog we have so far covered 704 songs penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. Around six to eight songs from the remaining songs seems to be difficult to find or they may not be available at all. Following is the details of movies and the number of songs from these movies yet to be posted on the blog.

Today I present here a song from the movie ‘Nanha Farishta’ (1969). ‘Nanha Farishta’ was directed by T Prakash Rao for Vijaya International, Madras. It was produced by B Nagi Reddi and Chakrapani. This movie was presented by B Nagi Reddi.

The star cast of the movie lists Pran, Ajit, Anwar Hussain, Padmini, Balraj Sahni and Baby Rani, supported by Suresh, Mukri, Raj Mehra, Sundar, Maruti, Prem Kumar and Johnny Walker.

Story of this movie was written by Thuraiyoor K Moorthy, and dialogues were written by Inder Raj Anand. Editing of this movie was done by BS Glaad.

This movie had four songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi and music composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

The playback singers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor and Manhar. [Author’s Note: The titles of the movie also mentioned the name of S Balbir in the list of playback singers, however HFGK has not mentioned Balbir’s name for any song of this movie.]

HFGK mentions the following four songs from this movie.

Song  Posted On
O Natkhat Nanhi Laadli Tujhe Dekhen  26.12.2020
Chandaa Kaahe Ka Tera Maama  08.03.2021
O Re O, Sharaabi Tujhme Ek Kharaabi  Being discussed today
 Bachche Mein Hai Bhagwaan  14.11.2014

Kalyanji-Anandji have worked with Sahir Ludhianvi in two movies, as per following details.

Movie Year MD Songs by Sahir
(in blog)
Songs by Sahir
(per HFGK)
Songs by Sahir (per – The People’s Poet)
Nanha Farishta 1969 Kalyanji-Anandji 3 4 4
Shankar Shambhu 1976 Kalyanji-Anandji 5 5 5

From the above table we can see that only one song from the movide ‘Nanha Farishta’ which is also the last song of ‘Sahir – KA’ association remains to be posted on the blog. This is also the final song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and on-screen Padmini is lip-syncing for Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Also seen in the picturization of the song are Pran, Ajit, and Anwar Hussain.

The song happens when the three criminals Pran, Ajit and Anwar Hussain got drunk and request Gauri (Padmini) to sing a song for them. Gauri is the caretaker of the little girl Baby (Baby Rani) whom the three have abducted after killing her father. Later the three criminals develop a soft corner for the baby girl and kidnapped her caretaker Gauri as well when the little girl fall sick.

Gauri has a plan for the criminals and that is why she readily agrees to sing and dance for the drunken criminals. But that is not to be disclosed here and that is something we have to leave intact for those who are interested in watching this movie. I have also not watched this movie and the above storyline in short is from what I got to read on internet.

With this post, the film ‘Nanha Farishta’ (1969) now joins the list of Yippeee’d movies on the blog.

Let us listen to the today’s song now.

One notices that Lata Mangeshkar did not have a single song with C Ramchandra in movies released in 1959 as well as 1960 because she fell out with him. Despite that C Ramchandra continued to be the music director with highest number of songs composed for Lata Mangeshkar (263). Shankar Jaikishan, who continued to work in many movies with Lata Mangeshkar closed in at 252 songs. Overall, the top eight music directors, viz C Ramchandra (263), Shankar Jaikishan (252), Anil Biswas (116), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), Chitragupta (105), Roshan (103), Madan Mohan (96) and Naushad (91) composed 1134 songs out of 2217 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1960. The top six lyricists till end of 1960 for Lata Mangeshkar were Rajinder Krishan (374), Shailendra (245), Hasrat Jaipuri (166), Shakeel Badayuni (134), Prem Dhaan (125) and Bharat Vyas (124). These six lyricists had penned 1168 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

Lata Mangeshkar tied up with music directors Malay Chakraborty, Pardesi, Pt Ravishankar, Usha Khanna and Vedpal Verma for the first time in movies of 1960. She tied up with lyricists Arjun, K L Pardesi, Muneer Aarzoo Kaazmi and Shamim Jaipuri for the first time in movies released in 1960.

Here is the summary of Lata Mangeshkar’s playback career in Hindi movies till end of 1960 :

As can be seen from the table of 1960, Lata Mangeshkar sang 166 songs in 48 movies released in 1960. As many as 139 of these songs have been covered in the blog. Out of 48 movies of 1960 where Lata Mangeshkar sang, all Lata Mangeshkar songs of 35 movies are already covered. So we have to look at the remaining 13 movies of 1960 to find Lata Mangesahkar songs to discuss in the blog.

Alphabetically the first such movie that offers us such Lata Mangeshkar songs to discuss is “Amar Shaheed”(1960). This movie was originally made in Tamil as Veerpandiya Kattabomman (1959). The movie was produced and directed by B R Panthalu for Padmini Pictures, Madras. The movie had Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Padmini, Raagini, S Varalaxmi, V K Ramaswami, O A K Tear, Kannan, Natrajan, M R Santanam, V R Rajagopal, Mutthulaxmi, T Lalitha, Baby Kanchan, Jawar Seetaraman etc in it.

It appears that the movie rights were bought by Alok Bharati, Madras. The movie was dubbed in Hindi as “Amar Shaheed”(1960).

It appears to me from the songs that the Hindi dubbing was done in a casual manner. From the way the songs have been dubbed, it appears to me that the person translating the songs from Tamil into Hindi tried to do a literal translation and ended up with a Hindi words that sound unnatural.

The movie had ten songs in it. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice is there in three songs. Two are solos and one is a duet with Manna Dey. None of these three songs have been covered in the blog so far.

As mentioned above, the dubbing of movie and songs leaves a lot to be desired. I have picked a song whose lyrics appears to make some semblence of sense to me. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and chorus. Arjun is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jamal Sen.

The song is picturised on Padmini and others.

From what I can make out, this song is about a strong bull that can apparenty strike fear in the minds of enemy. I have struggled to get the lyrics right but I have failed miserably, especially in the chorus part. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks andsuggest corrections.

I also request our knowledgeable readers to thro light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of the song.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 76
———————————————————————————–

This date 10 years ago (11 september 2010) was rather unremarkable, in contrast to the same day in 1893, or 2011, when rather more important events had taken place. On 11 september 1893, Swami Vivekanand delivered an iconic and eloquent speech at the Chicago Convention of Parliament of Religions. Introducing Hinduism to the world, Swami Vivekanand spoke about intolerance, religion and the need to end all forms of fanaticism. on 11 september 2001, One of the biggest terrorist attacks took place at New York.

In cricketing news, Lala Amarnath was born this day in 1911. Sri Lanka earned their first test match victory on this day in 1985 (no prizes for guessing that it was against India).

On this day in 1967, Indian troop gave a bloody nose to Chinese aggressors, when Chinese troops got a taste of their own medicine and nearly 300 plus Chinese troops was killed at Nathu La (Sikkim- China bordeer) when Brigadier Sagat Singh took matter in his own hands and retaliated in a manner that left Chinese army shellshocked for nearly half a century.

11 september 2010 was a rather more sedate day when things happened in a routine way, not only around the world but even in the blog. Six songs from six different movies were covered on that day. Here are the details :-

Blog Song number Song Movir-year Remarks
2945 Kyaa mil gayaa Bhagwaan tumhe dil ko dukhaa ke Anmol Ghadi 1946 YIPPEED
2946 Achchaa hotaa jo dil mein tu aayaa naa hotaa Naadaan 1951 10 songs covered out of 11

2949 Chale chalen se sajan dheere dheere Paayal 1957 5 songs covered out of 9
2950 Mehfil meri raaten meri Badnaam 1975 YIPPEED

Three out of six of these movies have since been YIPPEED. So today we have as many as three movies that can be taken up in our “Blog Ten Year Challenge” exercise.

“Paayal”(1957), one of these BTYC eligible movies was produced By Joseph Thomas and directed by Joseph Taliath Jr.for Madras Talkies. The movie had Padmini, Sunil Dutt, David, Baby Naaz, Ragini, Bipin Gupta, Raj Mehra(Guest Artiste), Achla Sachdev, Meenu Mumtaz, Sheoraj(Shivraj),Laxman Rao, Agha,Praveen Paul,Puri,Bhavan etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. The movie made its debut in the blog ten years ago on this date. Five songs have been covered in the blog so far as detailed here:-

This Week, That Year – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
16Aug – 22Aug, 2010
————————————————-
Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 56
————————————————–
Reviewing the week of Aug16 – Aug22, I just thought of doing the analysis in one more way – to just see where all we had been and what all were we listening to during the time from the start of the blog on 19Jul2008 to 22Aug2010. Interesting things appeared.

It all started with thought – what is the distribution of songs across the decades in the week under review. I did a quick sort check and came up with the following data. This week we had seen 31 songs posted in all. And these 31 songs were distributed according to decade as follows,

1930s

1

1940s

4

1950s

16

1960s

9

1970s

1

The distribution is quite as expected – of the 31 songs, 25 songs (80%) are from the decades of 50s and 60s. Goodness, aren’t these the most favorite years of practically all listeners of Hindi film music.

The thought then prompted me to take a view of the total songs posted thus far, i.e. till 22Aug of 2010. By the end of that week, the total number of posts was 2827, and the total number of songs posted was 2928. The 100 odd more songs are due to multiple songs being included in a single post – multipart and multi version songs.

And the results are pretty much along the same lines, as expected. The overall distribution for all songs till 22Aug2010 stands as follows,

1930s 26
1940s 228
1950s 972
1960s 1069
1970s 511
1980s 89
1990s 30
2000s 5

The overall % of the songs from 50s and 60s dips a little – down to 71%, but still, overwhelmingly most songs are still coming from that era. There is a sizeable interest in the 1970s – 17%. I am sure that is due to the fact that we are still listening to our favorite artists from the Golden Era. To approximately round off, the 30s-40s component is 8% and for 80s and beyond the allocation is 4%. In tabular form, as follows

30s-40s 8%
50s-60s 71%
70s 17%
80s+ 4%

Well, much as expected – the distribution of the listening and selection preferences of this group. Well, not maybe every week, but I will try to revisit this analysis after 2/3 months, and see the evolution of our selection preferences with time.

Let’s do the numbers for that week. Total posts that came on board that week is 31. Number of films represented is 27, with four films making a double appearance. Four films had made their debut that week, and no films were yippeee’d. However, since that week over the past 10 years, 24 of these films have been yippeee’d and seven remain pending. Also, that week we had one dot day.

The special event recorded for that week was a blog century. I have now inserted another column in the chart to track the appearance of century milestones. On 16 Aug 2010, the song “Jaan Pehchaan Ho” from the 1966 film ‘Gumnaam’ clocked in on the 28th century milestone for the blog. It was the 2800th post to come on board. Going back to revisit some of these posts, it is very enlightening. It is a delight to recall and refresh the large amount of trivia that is now silently sitting in the electrons on this blog’s storage. About this post – this was a special request post that Greta Memsaab had written for the blog. At 2800 posts, this was only the 12th guest post till then, and the second on by Memsaab. Poring through the article and the comments, one learns and re-learns so much more about these songs – names of the guitarists, name of the dancers, the fleeting appearance by Helen, the fact that the lead in dance music is lifted from the song “Teen Kanastar Peet Peet Kar” (‘Love Marriage’, 1957), and that an ad by Heinken has used this song – the entire lead in music and the mukhda of the song, in the voice of Rafi Sb. It is a revival experience par excellence.

And so, getting into this week. Seven films, and eight challenge opportunities for the team members. I must acknowledge that members are sending in challenge contributions – lyrics and sometimes articles too. And we need more of that. Gear up, and happy posting.

‘Raagini’ of 1958 is one of the two films pending for today’s date. The song being presented is a stage dance song, and as the performance rolls to the end, one finds that it is actually dream sequence song. It is being played out in a dream being experienced by Padmini, as she visualizes herself to be Anaarkali, dancing in the court of Prince Saleem, that is Kishore Kumar, the person she is love with.

The lyrics of this song are penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi, the music is composed by OP Nayar and the singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle.

Lyrics for this song have been sent in by Prakash ji.

With this post, the film ‘Raagini’ moves closer to gaining yippeee status, with just one more song pending.

[Author’s Note: This post is the beginning of a weekly series that is about the story of this blog. This story has already been appearing as the weekly challenge information being shared on Whatsapp group. In discussion with Atul ji, we agreed that the weekly presentation of this evolving story has become as good as a post by itself. And so we decided that the weekly information post on Whatsapp will also be duplicated as a post on the blog itself, making a more firm documentation of this story. Hence, this series.]

Blog Day:

4347 Post No. : 15658

“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that I knew little about when I was growing up. I watched this movie in 1978 when my went to college and my movie watching spree began with a vengeance. Those days, I only liked “new” movies and songs and scoffed at “old” movies and songs. But I had heard about old movies, so I would go and watch them when no “new” movie was there for me to watch. The old movies tended to run to empty house and so buying tickets for these movies was not a problem. I wondered if a day will come in future when one would be able to watch “new” movies with the same ease, without needing to queue up and black marketeers having a field day. Believe it or not, today we are actually in that situation where one can buy tickets of even brand new movies without needing to form a queue in the movie hall.

I watched “Kaajal”(1965) in a movie hall called Ratan Talkies. I knew that it was an old movie but still I mustered up enough tolerance within me and went to watch the movie. I was a few minutes late and the movie had already started. When I found that the movie had Raj Kumar (tragedy Kumar) and Meena Kumari (tragedy queen), I wondered if I had made a mistake and I would have to spend a misery filled three hours in the hall. But as soon as the songs of the movie began, I as well as others exclaimed-“arre ye gaana is film ka hai !”. Songs kept coming one after another, with the same collective response from the movie watchers.

Seeing that I had become a regular movie watcher only in that year, I had a lot of catching up to do. I was not aware about many of the actors that were there in the movie. Today, when I look back at the starcast of “Kaajal”(1965), I realise that it was full of big name actors. But when I was watching the movie at that time, I could identify only Raj Kumar, Meena Kumari and Dharmendra, aand that was all !

The movie had eleven songs in it. As many as ten songs have been covered in the past.

Here are the details of the songs already covered in the blog:-

I came to know thanks to some whatsapp messages that today (12 june) is the birthday of Padmini (12 june 1932-24 September 2006). When I watched “Kaajal”(1965) in the movie hall. I had no clue about her. I did not even know that the actress seen in a few songs in the movie was Padmini.

On the occasion of Padmini’s birth anniversary, here is the eleventh and final song from “Kaajal”(1965) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

The song is picturised as an archtypical get together song in a palatial home where people gather and politely watch a lady singing (while holding a sitar) and another lady dancing. In this song, Meena Kumari lip syncs while Padmini dances. Look at the people watching the performance. During those days, I did not even recognise Durga Khote !

“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that was worth watching for its songs. Today, I would go to the extent of saying that only the songs of the movie must be watched. The story is too melodramatic for me. 🙂

Many decades later (after I began this blog), I came to know that Padmini had two more sisters and they too were dancing stars like her, and that together they were known as Travancore sisters.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

With this song, songs of “Kaajal”(1965) are now fully represented in the blog and this movie joins the list of movies that are YIPPEED in the blog.

Blog Day: 4338 Post No.: 15636

Today’s song is from film Raaj Tilak-1958.

This was a S.S.Vasan film from his Gemini Pictures, Madras. Film Raaj Tilak was a remake of the original popular film in Tamil-“Vanji Kottai Valiban”( The youth from Vanji Fort). It was loosely based on the famous adventure novel, “The Count of Monte Cristo”, written by Alexander Dumas and first published in 1844. Its Telugu version was titled “Vijay Kota Veerudu”and the Hindi version was Raaj Tilak.

AVM and Gemini, the two giants from Madras were keen on making Bi-Lingual (Tamil-Hindi/Tamil-Telugu,Telugu-Hindi) or Tri-lingual (Tamil-Telugu-Hindi) films to capture all the three big markets. Southern bosses took pleasure in engaging artistes from Bombay and in return Bombay artistes were happy to work in southern films, because they were disciplined, punctual and worked methodically. Their payments, staying arrangements and the treatment to Hindi artistes was very satisfying.

From the time Vasan’s multilingual Blockbuster, Chandralekha’s success in 1948, it dawned on south producers that a huge market in Hindi belt was available for their successful south films. One after another hit films started from South, like Nishan-49, Mangala-50,Bahar-51, Mr. Sampat-52, Miss Mary-57, Asha-57 and such other films, which were either remakes of Tamil/Telugu hit films or films made in Madras.

During this period, C Ramchandra and his songs were very popular in south. At the same time, his favourite Lyricist Rajendra krishna also had a great demand in south. Rajendra Krishna worked for both AVM and Gemini films. Vasan wanted that Rajendra krishna should work only for Gemini and not AVM. However, Rajendra Krishna continued working for AVM, so Vasan decided not to take Rajendra krishna for Gemini films anymore.

In 1957, AVM’s film Bhabhi became a Hit film. Rajendra krishna had written all the songs for Bhabhi. In 1958, when Vasan Planned to make Raaj Tilak in Hindi and its Tamil and Telugu versions, at the same time, he selected C Ramchandra as its Music Director. That time C Ramchandra was working for film Amardeep-58 in Bombay and Rajendra krishna was the Lyricist. C Ramchandra knew that Vasan will not take Rajendra krishna as a Lyricist for Gemini films anymore. At that time only, P L Santoshi met C Ramchandra. He had fallen on bad days and requested C Ramchandra for his help.

With consideration for past successful association with Santoshi, C Ramchandra recommended Santoshi’s name to Vasan. He also agreed. When Rajendra Krishna came to know this, he did not like it and he severed ties with C Ramchandra. The two never worked together again. The year 1958 was not a good year for C Ramchandra anyway. Lata had given indications that after Raaj Tilak, she would not sing for C Ramchandra. She did only one solo and one duet in this film. After Rajendra krishna split with C Ramchandra, he started recommending Chitragupta, Madan Mohan and others to South producers. C Ramchnadra stopped getting their offers. In addition film Raaj Tilak also did not do so well.

The cast of film Raaj Tilak-58 was Vaijayanti Mala, Padmini, Gemini Ganeshan, Pran, Jagirdar, Bipin Gupta, Lalita Pawar, Durga Khote etc etc. Gemini Ganeshan (17-11-1920 to 22-3-2005), better known in Hindi belt as actress Rekha’s father, started his Hindi films with Devta-56. Then came Miss Mary-57 and his third film was Raaj Tilak-58. He acted in 24 Hindi films. His last film was Allauddin and wonderful Lamp-82. After his death in 2005, two films were released in 2009, namely Shivdoot and Devi Saraswati, both dubbed films.

When I saw actor Pran’s name in the cast of this film, I remembered that Pran had also acted in another same titled film Raaj Tilak-84, featuring Dharmendra, Hema etc. Pran’s first Hindi film – as a Hero – was Khandan-42 in Lahore. he again acted in another same name film Khandan-in 1965. In the 42 film he was the Hero, but in the 1965 film he was a Villain. He did exactly opposite in another same name film. In film Aan Baan-56 ( Ajit-N.Jaywant), he was a Villain, but in the 1972 film Aan Baan (Rajendra kumar-Rakhi) he did a benevolent person’s sober role in this film ! Pran acted as a Villain in film Chingari-55(Shekhar-N.Jayawant) and also in film Chingari-89 (Sanjay Khan-Leena Cghandavarkar).

Pran did role in many remakes of his films. When he came to Bombay from Lahore in 1948, he got roles in films Grihasthi, Ziddi and Chunaria. In 1948, two of his Lahore made films – Birhan and Barsat ki ek raat – released in India. In both these films, he was the Hero, but in India, he started as a villain in his first 3 films. Kishore Sahu remade film Grihasthi-48 as Film “Ghar Basaa ke Dekho”-1963. In this film Pran did the same role as in the 48 film. Comedian Gope had made a film “Malkin” in 1951 (Gope and Yakub). His brother Ram Kamlani remade this film as “Biradari’ in 1966 (Mehmood and Kanhaiyalal). Pran was villain in both the films.

In his 66 years of career, Pran did variety of roles. Besides acting in remakes and same title films, he also worked in 2-3 generations of actor families. In film Rajkumar-1964, he worked with Prithviraj Kapoor. With Raj Kapoor, he did films like Aah, Chori chori, Jis desh mein Ganga behti hai etc etc. He worked with Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor also. In 1973, he worked in film Rikshawala, with Randhir Kapoor and in film Bobby, with Rishi Kapoor. Thus he worked in 3 generations of Kapoor family.

Pran worked with Naseem Bano in film Sindbad the sailor-52 and worked in many films with Saira Bano-her daughter. He worked with Mumtaz Ali and Mehmood. Pran acted with Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt. He also worked with Dharmendra and Sunny Deol.

There was no other actor like him in Hindi film industry ever again.

Coming back to film Raaj Tilak-58, the story of the film was….

The loyal Diwan of the kingdom accuses the Senapathi to have planned the killing of the young prince. The king ,as a punishment banishes him to another country, but Senapati hides in the kingdom itself. One day he kills the king and becomes the ruler. Before dying, the king asks his loyal Diwan to save the prince and the princess. Diwan takes them and runs away, leaving his own wife and children.

Senapati captures Diwan’s wife, keeps her in prison on an island and leaves his son and daughter in the flowing river. Some kind person saves the children and they grow up as Chander ( G.Ganesan) and sister Gowri ( Vijaya kumari). Senapati comes to know about them and abducts Gowri and arrests Chander and keeps him in a prison on the same island as his mother. Gowri dies while attempting to run away.

Chander meets his mother and learns everything. He vows to kill the Senapathi. He tries to escape from the island with his mother, but mother dies on way and Chander is thrown into the raging sea. He survives and reaches Ratna island. The Rajkumari Mandakini of Ratna island loves him. He narrates every thing to her and she allows him to go his kingdom to kill Senapathi. He comes to the kingdom where he meets his father and also princes Padma who loves him. Meanwhile Mandakini also reaches the kingdom. Padma and Mandakini meet and Padma allows them their love, sacrificing her love.

However during the final battle, in an attempt to save Chander, Mandakini dies. Senapathi is killed and peace returns to kingdom. Padma and Chandar marry and he gets the Raj Tilak !

Today’s song from film Raaj Tilak-58 is sung by Asha, Rafi, Vinod and chorus. In the video, one can see Agha, Jagirdar, Shammi and Padmini. This will be the 4th song from this film to feature here.
