Ruk jaa o jaane wali ruk jaa

After quite some time, here is a Mukesh song from Kanhaiyya (1959). This song is a typical Raj Kapoor movie song. It means that the singer is Mukesh, Lyricist is Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan are the music directors.
This song, for a change, is not a sad song, unlike “mujhe tumse kuchh bhi na chaahiye” song from the same movie. I wonder how does one classify this song. The song sounds like a happy song by Mukesh and Raj Kapoor standards. This song is a nice and hummable song all right, as was the case with most Mukesh songs, though the lyrics of the song seems to be calling someone to “ruk ja” (stop). Since Nutan is shown walking away purposefully in this song, so my guess is that Raj Kapoor sings this song to appeal to Nutan to stop from going whereever she was going. Maybe others who have seen this movie can throw more light on this matter.

Song- Ruk jaa O jaanewaali ruk ja (Kanhaiya) (1959) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
ruk jaa o jaane waali ruk jaa
main to raahi teri manzil kaa
nazron mein teri main buraa sahi
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa
dekhaa hi nahin tujhko
soorat bhi na pahchaani
tu aake chali chham se
yoon doobke din paani
dekhaa hi nahin tujhko
soorat bhi na pahchaani
tu aake chali chham se
yoon doobke din paani
ruk jaa
ruk jaa o jaane waali ruk jaa
main to raahi teri manzil kaa
nazron mein teri main buraa sahi
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa …
muddat se mere dil ke
sapnon ki tu raani hai
ab tak na mile lekin
pahchaan puraani hai
muddat se mere dil ke
sapnon ki tu raani hai
ab tak na mile lekin
pahchaan puraani hai
ruk jaa
ruk jaa o jaane waali ruk jaa
main to raahi teri manzil kaa
nazron mein teri main buraa sahi
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa …
aa pyaar ki raahon mein
baahon kaa sahaaraa le
duniyaa jise gaati hai
us geet ko dohraa le
aa pyaar ki raahon mein
baahon kaa sahaaraa le
duniyaa jise gaati hai
us geet ko dohraa le
ruk jaa
ruk jaa o jaane waali ruk jaa
main to raahi teri manzil kaa
nazron mein teri main buraa sahi
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa
aadmi buraa nahin main dil kaa …

Lalitha, you are confusing this movie with Chhaliya.
In this, movie i.e Kanhaiyya,Nutan is in love with Krishna(the God) just like Meerabai. The film is so bad that the only redeemable feature is the excellent music.

I remember singing this song when I was little, without understanding any of it! Yes, RK is calling out to Nutan to stop, but that is before he comes to know that she is a married woman and separated from her husband during the Partition riots. It was one of those RK movies where he is doomed to fail in love. If I remember right, he sings another beautiful song, “Mere toote hue dil si koi to aaj yeh poochhe …” when he finds out. I saw this movie about 15 years back, so I am not sure, but all the songs were hits in this movie. There was a very good song by Lata also.
