This Rafi song is one that I have been listening to from my childhood, and this is one of the Rafi songs that is hardwired into my brain. Of course, additional informations viz movie, music directors etc were not part of that information.
It is only now that I have come to know about these additional informations. It is from “Pyaar hi pyaar”, a movie that has a rising star Dharmendra paired with Vyjyanti Mala, a fading one. I have no idea how this movie fared at the box office, but I am very surprised to find that this song ( and in fact none of the songs from this movie) failed to make any impression in the Binaca geetmala. The reason could of course be that 1968 was the titanium year of the golden decade in Bolywood music era with a glut of outstanding songs and therefore many classy songs like this one found themselves jostled out of contention by other equally classy songs.
Now, thanks to advancement in technology, we are no longer dependent on old methods of judging the popularity of a song. We find that even some forgotten songs could be great to listen to. This song has always remained popular and it has in fact grown in stature with time.I for one always regarded it as an iconic song, so what if this song failed to find a place in the Binaca geetmala finals during its time.

Just felt like listening to this song today, after a long time.
What an absolutely lovely song by Rafi saab.
With sweet lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri and a catchy tune by S-J.
And Dharam-Vyjanthi are cute too, though this was during Vyjanthi’s phase-out period.
Just LOVE this song!
