Hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaaaya hoga

Posted on: January 3, 2009

This is a song where the genius of Kaifi Azmi can be seen in his ability to express complex, complicated and involved feelings in a very coherent and understandable manner. The situation is one where India ( a peace loving country that had no time and inclination for a war) was attacked by China in 1962, and as happens with those unprepared, untrained and unequipped, the Indian soldiers found themselves as sitting ducks on the front.

“Haqeeqat” was a movie that was made on this theme and all its songs captured the feelings of the nation ( or at least those of the movie maker) very well. A few of its songs went on to become iconic songs that continue to be played on important occasions. For example, its song “Kar chale ham fida jaanotan saathiyn, ab tumhaare hawaale watan saathiyon” is one that can move Indians every time one listens to it.

This song “Hoke majbor mujhe usne bhulaaya hoga” captures the feelings of the soldiers on the warfront and that of their loved ones left behind in their homes. I have listened to this song many times, and this time I am listening to this song closely, in order to get the lyrics right, and I can visualise the emotions and the feelings that the words of this song convey. And let me tell you, capturing these feelings and emotions so nicely on paper was not easy in 1964 when this song was written. Not at all. In fact, I was so disturbed listening to this song in 2009 that I thought I would not be able to comment on this song. It has taken great will power on my part to do so. If one needs proof about the power of words, herein lies the proof. My hats off to Kaifi Azmi for this gem of a song.

I have not yet talked about the singers. Just imagine, Rafi, Talat, Manna Dey, Bhupinder figuring in one song. That way also, it is a very special song.

And the more I think about Madan Mohan, the more I am amazed. How can one single music director compose such high quality music, and that too while fighting for survival all the time. He would never compromise with quality no matter how precarious his position as a music director was in Bollywood, since most of his movies tended to flop at the box office and that affected his ability to land new assignments.

I am so thankful for Madan Mohan, who despite his professional problems, was always known to have coordial relations with his singers, and he in fact used to create his music keeping the range of the singer in mind. This very song, where four singers of different ranges have been used, is a case in point.

In summary, what a gem this song is ! I can not praise this song high enough.

Lyrics

hmm hmm hmmm
hmm hmmm hmmm
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe
usne bhulaayaa hogaa
zahar chupke se dawaa
jaanke khaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe
usne bhulaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe…

dil ne aise bhi kuchh afsaane sunaaye honge
dil ne aise bhi kuchh afsaane sunaaye honge
ashq aankhon ne piye aur na bahaaye honge
band kamare mein jo khat mere jalaaye honge
ek ik harf jabeen par
ubhar aayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe

usne ghabraake nazar laakh bachaayi hogi
usne ghabraake nazar laakh bachaayi hogi
dil ki lutati huyi duniyaa nazar aayi hogi
mez se jab meri tasveer hataayi hogi
mez se jab meri tasveer
hataayi hogi
haay
har taraf mujhko
har taraf mujhko

tadaptaa huaa paayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe

chhed ki baat pe armaan machal aayen honge
chhed ki baat pe armaan machal aayen honge
gham dikhaave ki hansi ne ubal aaye honge
naam par mere jab aansoo nikal aaye honge
naam par mere jab aansoo
nikal aaye honge
sar na kaandhe se
sar na kaandhe se

saheli ke uthaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe

hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaayaa hogaa
zahar chupke se dawaa jaanke khaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe

Everything you say about this song is so true, Atul.
In fact when I saw this movie for the first time just a couple of years ago (I had wanted to see it for many years !), it made a huge impression on me.

Normally when you have high expectations from a movie, there is every chance that you feel let down. When I saw this, I felt totally involved in it. Chetan Anand has done a fantastic job of making this movie.

And the songs…this song, kar chale, main yeh sochkar, zara si aahat…what can I say ? It is not just Madan Mohan’s music, it is also Kaifi Azmi’s amazing lyrics for songs of this movie. Just awesome.

In fact I thought I would not be able to write a review of this song, seeing how much I was affected every time I watched this video.

Incidentally I watched this movie in an open ground in 1970 at night where it was being screened for free. Those were the days.

Your comments have captured the essence about this song and the greatness of the composer.

In fact, after I heard Lata’s “Zara Si Aahat Hoti Hai” from this movie for the first time in 2008 and found that Madan Mohan was the composer, I began to look for his songs and discovered a wonderful treasure of unforgettable songs. “Khelo Na Mere Dilse” is another gem from Haqeeqat.

Furthermore, when I thought if it is at all possible to choose one song of Madan Mohan as the most memorable, I realized that it is not fair to do so; yet Rafi’s “Main Yeh Sochkar” from this movie came close to it.

This is a brilliant song, always loved this line “bijli nazron ne kayi din na giraayi hogi”

Great commentary on the song too. The gloomy atmosphere, the near-death situation, the romance, pain, separation is captured beautifully in this song – each singer bringing his unique voice.

Atul ji,

A very interesting info associated with this song. This is Bhupender’s first song in Hindi movies. Bhupender himself recalls this first break, under the baton of Madan Mohan, and being accepted by Chetan Anand; and also how nervous he was to sing along with the three established stalwarts singers of that era. He said his nervousness was compounded as he was to lead the opening of the song. Another interesting aspect is that Bhupender also played a small role in the movie as the wireless operator for the army unit.

Bhupinder is seen quite prominently in this song as one of the actors. You can see him at 0.35s, 0.56s & 1.55s singing parts of the song (though the playback voice is not necessarily his)

I may add one more interesting trivia of this film.
For the first and the last time,Shaukat Azmi, wife of Kaifi Azmi and mother of Shabana and Baba Azmi, also did a bit role in this film.
So also, Vijay Anand also did a cameo role in this film.
There were 2 more movies of the same name Haqeeqat, one in 1985 and the other in 1995.

Arun,

Beautiful write up keeping in line with Kaifi Azmi’s touching poetry. Whenever I listen to this song (also ‘Main yeh soch kar uske….’), I get emotionally drained.

The very fact that despite MM’s professional problems, he continued to get the unstinting support from singers like Lata, Rafi and Talat, shows the respect he commanded – both as Music Director and a fine human being.

Very interesting indeed. From a timid , defensive nation , an army only for its protection, now in 21st Century India is playing like the big boys with hegemonistic values , Hindutva etccc… Just wonder if any body can attempt an English translation of the lyrics. Thank you
