Main gaaun tum so jaao

The movie “Brahmachari” (1968 ) is very well known for its music. Two of its fast dance numbers- “dil ke jharokhen me” and “aj kal tere mere pyaar ke charche” in fact, have gone on to become the stuff of legends.
Other songs of this movie were also very good. This movie had a good story line (copied almost verbatim by Mr India two decades later).
The lori song where Shammi Kapoor tries to put the orphan kids ( that he rears up) to sleep is a beautiful song, full of love, affection, pathos ( he is trying to make them sleep on empty stomachs) is unforgettable and one that can melt even stout hearts. Rafi who sang the fast paced numbers mentioned above shows his versatility by singing this soft and mellow number with equal felicity.
Most loris that have become popular have been sung by females (naturally), but this lori sung by Rafi is right up there with them. And it is no mean achievement, one must say.
Update 26May2019 – This song has both a happy and a sad version in the film. The updated link below gives both the versions in the edited clip. The words of the happy and sad version are not different. The sad version does not carry the second antaraa, only the first and the third. And the third antaraa is presented with gaps, as per the emotional expression of the situation.

Song-Main gaaun tum so jaao (Brahmachari) (1968 ) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
lara lala lalala
main gaauun tum so jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
sukh sapnon mein kho jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
sukh sapnon mein kho jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
maanaa aaj ki raat hai lambi
maanaa din thaa bhaari
maanaa aaj ki raat hai lambi
maanaa din thaa bhaari
par jag badlaa badlegi
ek din taqadiir hamaarii
us din ke khvaab sajaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
sukh sapnon mein kho jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
kal tum jab aankhen khologe
jab hogaa ujiyaaraa
kal tum jab aankhen khologe
jab hogaa ujiyaaraa
khushiyon kaa sandeshaa lekar
aayegaa samay har pyaaraa
mat aas ke diip bujhaao,
main gaauun tum so jaao
sukh sapnon mein kho jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao na
jee karataa hai jeete jee
main yoon hi gaataa jaaun
jee kartaa hai jeete jee
main yoon hi gaataa jaaun
gardish mein thake haathon kaa
maathaa sahlaataa jaaun
phir ik din tum dohraao,
phir ik din tum dohraao,
sukh sapnon mein kho jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao
main gaauun tum so jaao na

I just love this song and have sung it to my own children many times. Rafi’s voice is so soothing and so tender, it is amazing that a man’s voice could do this, it is almost magical.
Another male lullaby could be the one in Milan “Ram kare aisa ho jaye meri nindiya tohe mil jaye …” by Mukesh. The famous “Soja rajakumari soja … ” by K.L. Saigal also qualifies as a lullaby sung by a man, though it seems to lack the soothing tone needed to lull a child to sleep.

This song won the FF award for best lyrics and the movie won FF award for Shammi Kapoor and SJ. They were at their peak popularity when the movie was released. Also a silver jubilee hit at two theatres in Mumbai: Naaz and Plaza.

Yes, Rafi was a truly unique singer for not only the physical range of his voice but is there a type of song he has not done?
I am trying to think of another male lullaby but cannot…
