Here is another sad song sung by Mukesh. This song is from a movie called “Saheli”. The song was written by Indeewar and Kalyanji Anandji were the music directors.
The song was picturised on Pradeep Kumar. I find the picturisation quite interesting. Pradeep Kumar is seen walking aimlessly, obviously looking suitably sad. The song repeatedly shows a river where a few sailed boats are shown. Towards the end of the song, Pradeep Kumar is shown on a bridge over the river. And the bridge abruptly ends up in the middle of the river. It is either an unfinished bridge, or a broken bridge.
I have not watched the movie, so I have no idea about the story line of this movie. And frankly speaking, I do not even have much idea about the movie itself. But the song itself is a different matter altogether. But then it is a sad song, and it has been sung by Mukesh, and so it should come as no surprise that the song has outlived the movie and has become an immortal song.
This song has a female version too, which is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Kalpana.

Jis dil mein basa tha pyaar tera
us dil ko kabhi ka tod diya
haay tod diya
badnaam na hone denge tujhe
tera naam hi lena chhod diya
haay chhod diya
Jis dil mein basa tha pyaar tera
jab yaad kabhi tum aaoge
samjhenge tumhen chaaha hi nahin
jab yaad kabhi tum aaoge
samjhenge tumhen chaaha hi nahin
raahon mein agar tum mil jaaoge
sochenge tumhen dekha hi nahin
sochenge tumhen dekha hi nahin
jo dar pe tumhaare jaati thin
un raahon ko hamne mod diya haay, mod diya
jis dil mein basa tha pyaar tera
ham kaun kisi ke hote hain
koyi hamko yaad karega kyoon
ham kaun kisi ke hote hain
koyi hamko yaad karega kyoon
apne do aansoo bhi ham par
koyi barbaad karega kyoon
koyi barbaad karega kyoon
us maajhi ko bhi gilaa hamse
manjhdhaar mein jisne chhod diya, haay, chhod diyaa
jis dil mein basaa tha pyaar teraa
us dil ko kabhi ka tod diya
haay tod diya
badnaam na hone denge tujhe
tera naam hi lena chhod diya
haay chhod diya
Jis dil mein basa tha pyaar tera …

jis dil me basa tha pyaar tera, us dil ko kabhi ka tod diya
badnaam na hone denge tujhe, tera naam hi lena chhod diya
The heart that was once the abode of your love, lies in shattered ruins since long
So that no ill repute may come to you, I no longer even mention your name
jab yaad kabhi tum aaoge, samjhenge tumhen chaaha hi nahin
raahon mein agar tum mil jaaoge, sochenge tumhen dekha hi nahin
jo dar pe tumhaare jaati thin, un raahon ko hamne mod diya
If ever your memories come to mind, I will pretend I have never loved you
If perchance we meet on the street, I will pretend I did not see you
I have changed the direction of the paths that lead to you door
ham kaun kisi ke hote hain, koyi hamko yaad karega kyoon
apne do aansoo bhi ham par, koyi barbaad karega kyoon
us maajhi ko bhi gilaa hamse, manjhdhaar mein jisne chhod diya
Why would anyone even remember me, I don’t mean anything to anybody
No one would now bother to even waste a tear drop for me
Even the boatman who deserted me in the middle of the whirlpool, blames me

jis dil me basa thha pyaar tera
tu auron ka koi aur tera
duniya mein hum kyun zinda hain
tu auron ka koi aur tera
duniya mein hum kyun zinda hain
hum ban kar kyun deewaar rahen
ye soch ke hum sharminda hain
ye soch ke hum sharminda hain
dar koi aur khule na khule
teri raahon ko hum ne chhod diya
haaye chhod diya
jis dil me basa tha pyaar tera
hum pyaar mein thhe nadaan bahut
kuchh karnaa thhaa kuchh kar baitthe
hum pyaar mein thhe nadaan bahut
kuchh karnaa thhaa kuchh kar baitthe
woh phool thhaa aur ke joodey kaa
hum jis se daaman bhar baithhe
hum jis se daaman bhar baithhe
hum ne khud apni bahaaron ka
veeraanon se rishta jod diyaa
haaye jod diyaa
jis dil me basa thha pyaar tera

You now belong to someone else, there is reason no more for me to continue living
I am embarrassed that you may consider my presence as a wall of separation
They say that when one door closes, then God opens many new
For me, maybe another door may never open, but I have forsaken the paths which you may traverse
hum pyaar mein thhe nadaan bahut, kuchh karnaa thhaa kuchh kar baitthe
woh phool thhaa aur ke joodey kaa, hum jis se daaman bhar baitthe
hum ne khud apni bahaaron ka, veeraanon se rishta jod diyaa
I was once immature and innocent, and in love
And traversed the paths I should not have
I had picked the flowers for myself, but they belonged to another
And now I have with my own hands changed my spring into a bleak desolation

the mukesh audio version on HMV(Saregama) is edited in the interludes.I wonder why the music directors allowed such butchery?you can verify on youtube or compare with lata version.
