Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mujhko iss raat ki tanhaayi me aawaaz na do

Posted on: January 12, 2009

There are many songs that I describe as “chaayageet” songs. “Chaayageet” songs by my definition are those which are best listened to at night, that too alone. Words like “raat” and “tanhaayi” tend to indicate that the song is a “chaayageet” song.

I have found that the effect is magnified if the “tanha raat” is a “baarish ki raat” as well. The mood of the song then takes on an added dimension of gloominess. And in case the song is sung by Mukesh, then one cannot ask for anything better.

This movie is called “Dil bhi tere ham bhi tere” and its music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji. The wonderful song is penned by someone called Shamim Jaipuri.

The song is picturised on Dharmendra who was then in his debut year as an actor. This must be one of the very first sad songs picturised on Dharmendra. In fact, this must be one of the very first songs ( of any kind) picturised on Dharmendra. The picturisation is appropriately “Chaayageet” like too.
PS-Later I was informed that this is a multiple version song and this song has a female version too. The female version is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Kumkum.

Mukesh version

dil bhi jalaayaa maine
tumko bhoolaa hi nahin
laakh bhulaayaa maine
main pareshaan hoon

is kadar jald kiya
mujhse kanaaraa tumne
koyi bhatkegaa akelaa
ye na sochaa tumne
chhup gaye ho

dil mera doob gaya
aas meri toot gayi
mere haathon hi se
patwaar meri chhoot gayi

hey Atul, you are posting more than a song a day, and I can’t keep up. Thanks for this absolutely lovely number (you keep reminding of songs that I know but have gone to the back of my head)…

I fell short of my target for the last three days, and so I was feeling like I had lost some valuable time in which I could have posted a few more songs.

[…] Ham bhi Tere” (1960), then only one song comes to the mind of most people and that song is Mujhko iss raat ki tanhaayi me aawaaz na do. But this movie had other songs in it too. Here is another song from this movie. This song is a […]

beautiful sung by mukesh saab 🙂

Lata Mangeshkar version :

Great song … beautifully described. The prelude music (after the bells) seems inspired by the opening bars of Brahms Hungarian dance No. 4. Perhaps it takes a genius to inspire another.
