Dilbar dil se pyaare

When Shammi Kapoor began his bull run as a hero, Shankar Jaikshan was the music director for his movies, but when he ended his bull run,Shankar jaikishan was replaced by R D Burman ( in Teesri Manzil).
I find something similar happening with Jeetendra too. His climb began with Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music (Farz, Jeene ki raah) but by “Caravan”, it was R D Burman who was composing music for Jeetendra too.
And “Caravan” was just as trend setting a movie as “Teesri Manzil”. The songs of “Caravan” can be said to have broken new ground in Bollywood music.
I was always under the impression that this song “dilbar dil se pyaare” which is a fast and furious number was sung by Asha Bhonsle, but I am surprised to find that Lata is the singer. My surprise is similar to the surprise when I found that one of the most well known cabaret songs of Bollywood movies ( from “Inteqam”) was sung not by Asha Bhonsle, but by Lata.
This just goes on to show that Lata was tremendously versatile. And it took a musical genius like R D Burman to get the most out of Lata in this kind of song, where Lata’s voice was not tried before.
Song-Dilbar dil se pyaare (Caravan) (1971) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD- R D Burman

o nas-nas meri sulge aise piyaa, sadaa-sadaa sadaa
o jali banke lakdi jaise piyaa hmm
o kyun sulgaaye mujhko, mujhko, meri lag jaaye tujhko, tujhko
rahe tu bhi jaltaa bujhtaa re he

Lovely song, superb timepass movie. I have watched it many times and have never got bored.
Actually all the songs are good fun.
“Daiya re main kahan aa phasi” is a song that comes to mind.
Not the most famous song but it is real timepass.

Atul, I had never listened to this song from Caravan till around the late 90s. One of the hit Rajinikant starrer in Tamil had a track inspired by this Lata track called ‘Azhagu nee nadandhal nadai azhagu..’

Such fine fine singing of a very difficult song: have you noticed how Lata transforms some very strong sounding words into smooth singing e.g. jali banke lakdi..!
Both she and Asha are so much more versatile than popular journalism would have us believe.
Apart from INTEQAM, what about “Rangeela re tere rang mein..” from the film Prem Pujari by Lata,
or Asha’s lovely rendering of “Ab Ke baras bhej bhaiya ko babul” from the film BANDINI
