Maayi ri main kaase kahoon peer apne jiya ki

Most of the movies where Madan Mohan gave music failed at the box office, but when it comes to their music, music of even these flop movies became popular. In fact, a large number of songs composed by Madan Mohan have gone on to become classics.
Not just the box office, Madan Mohan often found himself deprived of awards too. Filmfare award, which was a coveted award, always eluded him though he came close to it in 1964, only to be pipped for the post.
Madan Mohan got some semblance of recognition when “Dastak”, a 1970 movie ( flop at the box office, of course) got recognised by the Government of India, and Madan Mohan was given the award for best music director. It is to be kept in mind that national awards are for movies in all Indian languages, not just Hindi, so in a way, Madan Mohan was recognised as the best music director in 1970, not only in Bollywood, but in the entire Indian movie industry which also includes movie industries of South India and other places.
Dastak was a movie far ahead of its times and few people ( including movie critics) had the ability to appreciate the movie. So it is to the great credit of the government of India judges that they actually managed to recognise a true genius in this case.
The songs of “Dastak” were indeed outstanding songs, which may not have won popular approval, but then these songs were meant for classes, not for the masses.
The song “mai ri main kaase kahun peer apne jiya ki” is a superb song. The song is sung by Lata. The same song also has a Madan Mohan version. Yes, Madan Mohan too sang this song, and his version is also great to listen to.
Here, I present both the versions. Listen to both the versions. Listening to this song is a divine experience.

There was a reason why Madan Mohan sang this song. The movie DASTAK was ready except for the filming of this song. But Lata was out of India. Madan Mohan took over the responsibility of singng this song so that it could be filmed on Waheeda. In the following week Lata was back. She sang the original song, and the playback was ‘fitted’ in the film before release.

Thanks Sadanandji for the version with three antras. Dastak CD has only two. Lataji and MM- both versions has it’s own charm/depth but you will be shocked/surprised to know that I enjoy MM’s version more than Lataji.

MM has rendered the song just like a Hindustani classical singer. Since he had composed the song, it was quite natural for him to translate what was conceived by him better than Lata while singing the song.
