Bagh mein kali khili bagiya mahki

on:This song appears quite a women’s lib song to me, at least by Indian standards. The song shows Tanuja singing this song which basically means that flower has blossomed in the garden , but the bees have not yet arrived.
This is Bollywood euphemism to suggest that she is now a desirable grown up woman and she desires attention of the opposite sex. One must say it is quite a bold statement of intent on her part, since the opposite sexes meeting and showing love for each other did not meet with social approval then, and same is the situation even now.
As if that is not enough, she then proceeds to remove her overalls and revelas a bathing suit inside. She obviously intends to take a dip in the swiming pool.
Now, for those who read Bollywood filmy magazines, heroines would be seen stating in these magazines that they were against giving revealing scenes, they will never do a swimming suit scene etc, we are Indians, etc etc. So this song is such a refreshing change from all those hypocritical talks. My message to all those actresses who are not into doing “bold” scenes is- “Bahanji, you do not have thefigure to do such songs, so cut out the crap about being against such songs and all that. Do you mean to say that swimmers in swimming competitions are doing “bold” scenes by swimming in their swimming costume. You, my dear bahanji, are lucky that you are getting to act in a Bollywood movies. You do not have the calibre to get any kind of roles in movies of other countries.”
Rant over. The song later shows Dharmendra coming towards her, holding a bicycle. And seeing that she is swimming, he does a double take and turns his back towards her, lest he looking at her be misconstrued as lecherous behaviour.
I told you, that is how things worked ( still work) in India. That is why I say that this song and its picturisation was quite a women’s lib song. As things stand, Tanuja was swimming apparently to catch the eye of Dharmendra.
In later years , Dharmendra too would become a little less coy and start taking interest in women. That movie”Dillagi” would come a few years later, where he would read erotic passages from Kalidas poetry to girl students. But that was still a few years into the future. Here Dharmendra displays his conservative upbearing and resists being the “bhanwra” that Tanuja is seeking to attract.

Song- Baagh me kali khili (Chand aur Suraj) (1965) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Salil Chowdhary
Lyrics
Baagh me kali khili bagiya mahki
par haay re abhi idhar bhanwra nahin aaya
raah me nazar bichhi bahki bahki
aur bewajah ghadi ghadi ye dil ghabraaya
haay re kyun na aaya kyun na aaya kyun na aaya
Baagh me kali khili bagiya mahki
par haay re abhi idhar bhanwra nahin aaya
raah me nazar bichhi bahki bahki
aur bewajah ghadi ghadi ye dil ghabraaya
haay re kyun na aaya kyun na aaya kyun na aaya
baithen hain ham to armaan jagaaye
baithen hain ham to armaan jagaaye
seene me laakhon toofan chhupaaye
mat poochho man ko kaise manaaya
Baagh me kali khili bagiya mahki
par haay re abhi idhar bhanwra nahin aaya
raah me nazar bichhi bahki bahki
aur bewajah ghadi ghadi ye dil ghabraaya
haay re kyun na aaya kyun na aaya kyun naa aaya
sapne jo aaye tadpa ke jaaye
sapne jo aaye tadpa ke jaaye
dil ki lagi ko lahka ke jaaye
mushkil se hamne har din bitaaya
Baagh me kali khili bagiya mahki
par haay re abhi idhar bhanwra nahin aaya
raah me nazar bichhi bahki bahki
aur bewajah ghadi ghadi ye dil ghabraaya
haay re kyun na aaya kyun na aaya kyun na aaya
ik meethi agni me jalta hai tan man
ik meethi agni me jalta hai tan man
baat aur bigdi barsa jo saawan
bachpan ganwaake mainne sab kuchh ganwaaya
Baagh me kali khili bagiya mahki
par haay re abhi idhar bhanwra nahin aaya
raah me nazar bichhi bahki bahki
aur bewajah ghadi ghadi ye dil ghabraaya
haay re kyun na aaya kyun na aaya kyun na aaya
