Pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai

Posted on: February 3, 2009

Most movies that are remembered by future generations are those which are made by established film makers with established personnel. It is rare to find a movie made by novice filmakers with novice personnel hit the jackpot. Most of the time, such movies fail miserably, and quite deservedly too.

I had not heard of this movie called Umang (1969). Now I have, thanks to farmaishes of its songs by Raja. I wondered what this movie and its songs were all about as I had neither heard about the movie nor its songs.

I am sure very few people may have watched this movie. And apparently Raja was one of those few such people who watched movie. Raja, what were you up to ? You bunked your KG classes to watch movies like this ? 😉

Apparently, this movie was made using the students of Film and TV institute, Pune, which was then newly set up.

There were sceptics in Bollywood who said that acting could not be taught in an institute. I am not sure whether acting can or cannot be taught there, but I am sure that such institutes cannot make stars and certainly they cannot make successful movies with their students.

With the benefit of hindsight, I can point out lots and lots of flaws in this movie made to showcase the film making ability of that institute. If this movie was made just to prove that they could make movies, then I have nothing more to say. But if the idea was to make a movie that real spectators would pay to watch, then the movie was a miserable failure.

I am sure the movie makers had not known about SWOT analysis. Had they done an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the resources at their disposal, then they would not have made a movie on a story like this.

As I can see, they were trying to make a Jeetendra/ Rajesh Khanna/ Shammi Kapoor kind of movie. But they forgot to realise that Jeetendra/ Rajesh Khanna/Shammi Kapoor did not get their stature overnight. All these people started modestly, acted in a few movies where they played rather modest roles before they began to play larger than life roles. Movie watchers can accept an established actor in roles where he makes tall claims about fighting the world and winning his love against all odds. But when dumb looking “lead actors” start playing such roles, then the movie goers are bound to feel irritated. “Has the guy playing hero and talking big seen his face in the mirror”- is the question that occurs to most movie watchers while watching such movies.

Thankfully, the film institute did not ask their inhouse students to compose the music too. They hired established names for that. And these established names- Shankar Jaikishan, Hasrat Jaipuri, Kishore Kumar and Rafi, ensured that there was atleast something that this movie would be remembered for. Yes, music of this movie is the only saving grace for it, though no effort has been spared to spoil the songs while picturising them.

This song, like most songs from this movie, is better heard than watched. But one may as well watch it to see how a good song can be made to duel with shoody picturisation. Luckily for us,the quality of the song is such that even the lousy picturisation cannot detract from the song.

I find that this song has people like Asrani and Keshto Mukherji too in bit roles. I was not aware that Keshto Mukherjee too was a Film and TV institute student. It is just Asrani and Keshto Mukherji out of the entire cast of this movie that made it into the Bollywood movies. And I can bet that it was not because of them being the students of this institute, but because of their sheer talent. The less said about the so called lead actors of this movie, the better. And thankfully, they were not again allowed to torture the movie goers in future.

Song-Pyar pe koi bas to nahin hai (Umang) (1970) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

arre pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
arre pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye

kyaa khabar hai kidhar ho rawaani
pyaar gangaa kaa jamanaa kaa paani
hain jahaan mein fasaane hazaaron
par anokhi hai iski kahaani
are pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye

lalalalala

kyon ulajhtaa hai hamse zamaanaa
jisko aataa nahin dil lagaanaa
hamse seekhe mohabbat mein jeenaa
ham badal denge dil kaa fasaanaa
arre pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
arre pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye

dil ke aane ke raste niraale
baat samjhe kahan daulatwaale
poochkar pyaar hota nahin hai
zulm karte hain kyun duniyawaale
are pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
arre pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
arre pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
pyaar pe koyi bas to nahin hai kahe deewaanaa dil
jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye
o jisase ho jaaye ho jaaye ho jaaye

Well, the biggest stars and excellent actors that the film institute produced was no doubt Jaya Bhaduri, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and even Shabana Azmi but they had company in the form of Asrani, Danny Denzongpa, Paintal and directors like Ghai.

In fact I remember that it was said that Jaya’s parents were not keen when she wanted to become an actress but her father agreed on the condition that she go and learn it “properly”.

Of course it is also the place where Amitabh Bachchan first saw her there when she did a monologue as the best student or something (apparently she was their star pupil in acting terms) and he was visiting a friend, but no one thought she would make it Hindi films : less than 5´tall, no glamour looks.

Now when I look at her films, I realise that some of the finest Lata numbers of her latter years have been filmed on Jaya!

Well, as for Naseeruddin and Shabana and the others, the Film Institute can certainly boast of quality alumni.

If one looks at the quality of this movie, one has to say that not everyone who enrolled there was of very good quality.

I think there is another better song in this movie . The lyrics is like . “sacha pyar ko jhuk nahin saktha” sung by Kisjore which was a big hit in those days.

I have posted that song too.

Oh Atul, you are being rather unkind. I liked Archana, she was the lead in Buddha Mil Gaya which was a good movie. Paintal also debuted in this movie, and was successful. I spotted several notable character actors here, Nadira, Manmohan Krishna, Durga Khote. I enjoyed the video thoroughly.

Thanks for posting this.
