Chanda ki chaandni ka jaadoo
Posted on: February 6, 2009
This is a song that I have listened to for the first time only today. I am not surprised because by now I have got used to it.
Listening to a song for the first time 50 years after it was created is like walking down on a deserted beach where gems are strewn all over and stumbling upon gems after gems on almost every step.
This gem is from a 1958 movie called “Sitaaron se aage”. The song “Chanda ki chandni ka jadoo” is sung by Asha Bhonsle and the song is picturised on Vyjyanti Mala and Ashok Kumar.
S D Burman was the music director whereas Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist.
It is a beautiful “Chaayageet” category of song. Lovely ! It is amazing to note how S D Burman has utilised Asha Bhonsle’s voice so well in this romantic song.

Lyrics
Chanda ki chandni ka jaadoo
ye raat ye samaa
ulfat ki mauj le chalin hain
mujhko naa jaane kahan
Chanda ki chandni ka jaadoo
ye raat ye samaa
ulfat ki mauj le chalin hain
mujhko naa jaane kahan
Chanda ki chandni ka jaadoo
aaa aaa
poocho na hai mere dil me kya
jo mere saath ho tum
apna bhi main pata kya jaanun
hoon main to pyaar me gum
poocho na hai mere dil me kya
jo mere saath ho tum
apna bhi main pata kya jaanun
hoon main to pyaar me gum
dil pe nahin hai aaj kaabu
khulti nahin jubaan
ulfat ki mauj le chalin hain
mujhko na jane kahan
Chanda ki chandni ka jaadoo
main nadiya tu mera saagar hai
o man ke meet mere
jhoomejaa tu yoonhi lahron me
sun sun ke geet mere
main nadiya tu mera saagar hai
o man ke meet mere
jhoomejaa tu yoonhi lahron me
sun sun ke geet mere
bheegi ye raat aur main hoon
mausam jawaan jawaan
ulfat ki mauj le chali hai
mujhko na jane kahan
Chanda ki chandni ka jaadoo
ye raat ye samaa
ulfat ki mauj le chalin hain
mujhko na jaane kahan
Chanda ki chandni ka jaadoo
hmm ha ha ha ha
hmm ha ha ha ha

Lost for words to describe the imagery that this beautiful melody brings forth in my mind. Intoxicating tune by the great SDB.

I heard this song for the first time, but I kept thinking I had heard this tune before. Then it struck me. It is from the “Funtoosh” song “Denewala Jab bhi deta…” In that song by Kishorekumar, there is a stanza: “Apna bhi ghar is jahan me…”
MD was SDBurman there too.
