Dil gham se jal raha hai

Posted on: February 11, 2009

Here is an old song from 1961 which I had never heard before till yesterday. This song is sung by Lata Suman Kaltanpur for Nimmi and the movie is “Shama”.

The lyrics by Kaifi Azmi are interesting. We have lyrics likening “Dil” to a breakable substance which gets broken frequently in Bollywood movie songs, but in this song, “dil” is likened to a combustible substance. As we know, a combustible substance releases smoke too, while burning. The poet would rather like the heart to burn in a smokeless manner, much like smokeless chulhas that were displayed in “Khadi gramodhyog exhibitions” in olden days.

“Smokeless heart”, now that is an intersting idea. I suppose an unbreakable heart would be just as useful in Bollywood.

Ghulam Mohammad was the music director of this song.

Song-Dil gham se jal raha hai (Shama) (1961) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Ghulam Mohammad

Lyrics

Dil gham se jal raha hai jale
par dhuaan na ho
Dil gham se jal raha hai jale
par dhuaan na ho
mumkin hai iske baad koyi imtihaan na ho
koyi imtihaan na ho
mumkin hai iske baad koyi imtihaan na ho
koyi imtihaan na ho

Duniya to kya Khuda se bhi ghabra ke kah diya
Duniya to kya Khuda se bhi ghabra ke kah diya
ghabra ke kah diya
wo meharbaan nahin to koyi meharabaan na ho
koyi meharabaan na ho
Dil gham se jal raha hai jale
par dhuaan na ho

Lootaa khushi ne
aag laga di bahaar ne
Lootaa khushi ne
aag laga di bahaar ne
aag laga di bahaar ne
barbaad is tarah bhi kisi ka jahaan na ho
kisi ka jahaan na ho
Dil gham se jal raha hai jale
par dhuaan na ho

ab to wahin sakoon milega mujhe jahaan
ab to yahin sakoon milega mujhe jahaan
milega mujhe jahaan
ye sang dil zameen na ho asmaan na ho
zameen aasmaan na ho
Dil gham se jal raha hai jale
par dhuaan na ho

Thanks for introducing to this nice song. I like this dhuan explanation you have given..smokeless chullahs. Ha ha ha 🙂

Dhuan was also used by Mir Taqi Mir in his famous ghazal.

dekh to dil ki jaaN se uThtaa hai
ye dhuaaN saa kahaaN se uThtaa hai

These Urdu shaayars were not very good cardiologists, I suppose.

All poets have the ‘poetic liberty’ as their birth right. 😉

One more example on ‘Dhuaan’ from one of the lines from the song ‘Baithi hoon teri yaad ka lekarke sahara’ from film ‘VILLAGE GIRL’ (1945)’ :

“Har saans dhuaan banke nikalta hai hamara”

I think the poet is implying that no matter even if the heart burns down to the ashes, there should not be any “dhuan” .. It is dhuan which is visible to others not the burning heart which is inside ..
She prefers to pass away with her own ghum burried with her .. aaah

[…] “Shama” (1961) is a movie of 1960s where Suraiyya was seen as an actor-singer. This movie had some very nice songs sung by her.I have posted two songs from this movie so far, viz. Dhadakte dil ki tamanna ho mera pyaar ho tum (Shama) and Dil gham se jal raha hai(Shama)(1961). […]

Your link is no longer working. Here is the new video link :

The singer is Suman Kalyanpur and not Lata Mangeshkar as mentioned in your write up as well as indicated below your video link.

Excellent Melody, Thank you Atulji for the introduction.
One small correction in the first line of 3rd stanza:
ab tho “WAHIN”(not “YAHIN”) sakoon milegaa mujhe jahaan
