Though I have posted many old songs, but I had almost “forgotten” about this song. While searching for songs that I had not yet posted, I came across this one. As happens with me in most cases, I only know the first one or two lines of most songs. Getting oneself familiarised with the entire lyrics is a very interesting and rewarding experience, as I have found with with most such songs.
I went through the lyrics of this song as I do with all the songs before posting them. It seems to me that the by now ubiquitous Hindi phrase “kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana” was coined thanks to this song. That way, Majrooh Sultanpuri, the lyricist of this song definitely added to Hindi/Urdu literature. But then the lyricist, like many others was an eminent man of letters, who had great ability to express even complex thoughts with simple words. In coming days, lyrics for similar situations would become much more low brow.
Coming up with such novel words for what was a “cabaret” song of sorts speaks highly of the imagination of the lyricist.
The the music which I regarded as old style, is something that I now regard as evergreen style.
How perceptions change as one gets older and (hopefully) gets a holistic views of music of several decades.
Shamshad Begum is the singer who sings this seductive song in 1950s style. The song is from “C I D” and picturised on Waheeda Rehman. Incidentally, “C I D” was regarded as a very mysterious word even till 1970s. Even grown up people thought that people belonging to C I D possessed superhuman qualities. Who knows, watching movies like this may have helped form their views.
Song-Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishaana(C I D )( 1956) Singer-Shamshad Begum, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri,MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
jeene do zaalim banaao na deewaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
koi na jaane iraade hain kidhar ke
koi na jaane iraade hain kidhar ke
maar na dena teer nazar ka kisi ke jigar me
maar na dena teer nazar ka kisi ke jigar me
naazuk ye dil hai bachaana o bachaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
tauba ji tauba nigaahon ka machalna
tauba ji tauba nigaahon ka machalna
dekhbhal ke ai dilwaalon paholoo badalna
dekhbhal ke ai dilwaalon paholoo badalna
aakhir adaa ki adaa hai mastaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
Kahin pe nigaahen kahin pe nishaana
zakhmi hain tere jaaye to kahan jaayen
zakhmi hain tere jaaye to kahan jaayen
tere teer ke maare huye deten hain sadaayen
tere teer ke maare huye deten hain sadaayen
kardo ji ghaayal tumhaara hai zamaana
