Ek bangla bane nyaara

Here is another K L Saigal classic from “President” (1937). Kidar Sharma was the lyricist ( can someone confirm it)and R C Boral was the music director.
I have heard this song many a times in “Purani filmon ke geet” programme of Radio Ceylon, but it is the first time I heard the dialogues acompanying the song yesterday. And of course, it is for the first time I watched the picturisation as well. The lyrics are quite interesting.
The 1937 style picturisation is inadvertently funny.

Yes, when I joined a reputed bank in 1975 my salary was Rs.250/- per month as a clerk apprentice. After 3 months my salary was increased to Rs.450/-. And out of this Rs.450/- I used to pay my (morning)College fees, buy dresses for me and plus conveyance. Imagine, we were all so happy. But now inspite of earning good amount of salary, people are not happy. They cannot make their ends meet due to their fulfilling unwanted needs. Really, days have changed. Aage kya hoga, bhagwan jaane. Life is going to be tough.

The song is different. It is NOT Ek Bangla Bane Nyaara. There is some problem of mixing. Did you check it. The song I can here is Rahegi na Badariya Chhayi.

As a child, I used to make fun of K.L.Saigal’s songs, but now I find myself enjoying listening to them. Strange, how our tastes change, or is it merely nostalgia induced by the passing of our youth?
My father used to say that when he started working in the early 40s, his pay of Rs. 225 was considered a princely sum and he used to be able to save quite a bit from that amount! I was thinking of that when I heard the line in this song about the salary of Rs. 400 monthly, and wondered what our children would think about these numbers!
