Mere sapnon ki raani (K L Saigal)

Posted on: March 5, 2009

He is yet another K L Saigal song in this blog. This song is from “Shahjahan” (1946).

Wait a minute. Did I say yet another song ? Far from it. I think this song is quite a special song.

First of all its first line is exactly the same as the first line of the song from “Aradhana”. In fact when I listened to this K L Saigal song having listened to the Kishore Kumar song first , I scoffed. But then I was a pre teen those days. Not just pre teens like me, even grown ups were caught up in the magical spell cast by Kishore Kumar those days.

Kishore Kumar himself would have given one arm and a leg to meet K L Saigal, who was his idol. But he could never meet his idol. Not just Kishore Kumar, even Lata, who too idolised K L Saigal, never met her idol.

Rafi, on the other hand, was luckier. He not only got to meet K L Saigal, he even got a chance to sing alongwith K L Saigal. Rafi, then a newcomer did not sing on equal terms with Saigal,of course. rafi was part of chorus in the song. Which song ? This very song.

Yes, listen to the last portions of the song, and one can hera the unmistakable voice of Rafi in the song.

That is why I regard this song as a special song. This song could well be regarded as a song where one legend passed on the baton of male playback singing to another (would be) legend.

Song-Mere sapno ki raani (Shahjahan) (1946) Singer-K L Saigal, Lyrics- Khumar Barabankwi, MD- Naushad

Lyrics

aankhen neendon ke khazaane hain
do ulfat ke paimaane hain
zulfen raaton ki jawaani
mere sapnon ki raani
roohi

mere sapnon ki raani
mere sapnon ki raani
roohi roohi roohi
roohi roohi roohi
mere sapnon ki raani

aankhen neendon ke khazaane hain
do ulfat ke paimaane hain
aankhen neendon ke khazaane hain
do ulfat ke paimaane hain
zulfen raaton ki jawaani
zulfen raaton ki jawaani
sapnon ki raani

maathe pe chaand utar aaye
honthon pe bhanvraa mandlaaye
maathe pe chaand utar aaye
honthon pe bhanvraa mandlaaye
mukhdaa phoolon ki kahaani
mukhdaa phoolon ki kahaani
sapnon ki raani
mere sapnon ki raani
roohi roohi roohi
roohi roohi roohi
mere sapnon ki raani

saanche mein dhali hai har dil ke
haan
palte na nigaahen phir milake
saanche mein dhali hai har dil ke

palte na nigaahen phir milake
patthar kaa jigar ho paani

chup ho to udaasi dansti hai
hans de to khudaayi hansti hai

hans de to khudaayi hansti hai
boley to fizaa nooraani

THERE IS A MISTAKE IN YOUR LYRICS,IN THE FIRST ANTARA IT IS :
ZULFEN RAATON KI JAWAANI (AND NOT “DIL TERA SHOKH JAWAANI ,WHICH INFACT DOES NOT HAVE ANY SENSE !!)

atiullah ji,

After carefully listening to the song several times,I strongly feel that the given lyrics are correct.
I fail to understand why you say that it does not have any sense( ‘meaning’ would have been a gentler word).
The word SHOKH means playful, mischievous, saucy and therefore it fits appropriately.
I do not claim to be an Urdu expert, but my education in Urdu and last 6 decades of urdu’s companionship makes me love this language.
I am open for correction any time without prejudice.

Atul sir,
I have been enjoying your songs for quite some time. But many times,it is the studied comments of Arunkumar Deshmukh,Sudhir Kapur and Nahm are so intersting that I always look for them.I get so much knowledga from their comments.Mr.Deshmukh seems to be a khazana of information.
Thanks for everything.

You are very correct. Indeed we have some great treasurehouses of information among the readers of this blog. Mr Deshmukh, Sudhir, nahm- all of them are extremely knowledgeable persons. We have learnt a lot from the information furnished by them.

Thanks for correcting the lyrics.
I meant “dil tera shokh jawani ” which means in english :your heart is a noughty youth ” doesnt make sense with rest of the lyrics .

Anyhow thanks for rectifying the earlier mistake in lyrics

Atul ji,
Very rare song indeed.
Rafi saab’s name is not mentioned in the tag below the video link.
Also, better to give a separate colour to the lyrics ( words) sung by Mohammed Rafi, as is the practice on the blog now.

Thanks.
