Mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai

Posted on: March 5, 2009

Iqbal Qureshi is one of the lesser known music directors whose contribution in making Bollywood music of 1950s and 1960s what it was ( the golden era) was second to none.

Here is a song composed by him from a movie called “Umar Qaid” (1961). It is sung by Mukesh and the lyricist was Hasrat Jaipuri. This song is picturised on Sudhir and Nazima.

Song-Mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai (Umar Qaid) (1961) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD- Iqbal Qureshi

Lyrics

mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai
wo nazar se mujhko giraa na de
meri zindagi kaa diyaa kahin
meri zindagi kaa diyaa kahin
ye ghamon ki aandhi bujhaa na de
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai…

mere dil ke daagh na jal uthen
mere dil ke daagh
mere dil ke daagh na jal uthen
kahin mere seene ki aag se
kahin mere seene ki aag se
ye ghuti-ghuti meri aah bhi
ye ghuti-ghuti meri aah bhi
kahin hosh mere ganvaa na de
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai

kise apna haal sunaoon main
kise apna haal
kise apna haal sunaoon main
mera dil bhi ghair ka ho chuka
mera dil bhi ghair ka ho chuka
badi uljhanon mein ghira hoon main
badi uljhanon mein ghira hoon main
ke fasaana koi banaa na de
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai

main diyaa hoon aisaa jahaan mein
main diyaa hoon aisaa
main diyaa hoon aisaa jahaan mein
ke jalaa to hoon nahin roshni
ke jalaa to hoon nahin roshni
jo jigar mein hai wo khalish kahin
jo jigar mein hai wo khalish kahin
meri hasraton ko mitaa na de
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai
wo nazar se mujhe giraa na de
mujhe raat din ye khayaal hai

Translation (Provided by Raja)

I worry day and night
That I should not fall in her esteem
The light that is my life
Should not be extinguished by these storms of misery
I worry day and night…

That the scars in my heart do not get singed
By the fire that burns within me
That these sighs that I struggle with
Do not drive me totally crazy
I worry day and night…

Who do I explain my condition to
That my heart is lost to another
I am surrounded by lots of problems
(I worry) that a mockery not be made of me

I am such a lamp in this world
That, when lit, provides no light
(I worry) that this torture in my heart
Does not destroy my dreams/ambitions
I worry day and night…

Thanks for posting this farmaish of mine.
Unfortunately the video has been removed.
No problem as such – we cannot help it, I suppose.

Ohhh, thanks so much for posting the video again.
You cannot imagine how much I like this song.
I think this will be in my top-25 songs of all time

Mukesh is superb – and the lyrics are absolutely fantastic. In fact, the lyrics attracted me first to this song.

Btw, the hero is Sudhir. The heroine could be Nazima (remember, she used to act as sister in many movies ?)

One bit of trivia. Sudhir was a close college friend of Sunil Dutt. Just like MacMohan was. In fact Sudhir got into movies even before Sunil Dutt did (we are talking about very early-1950s !!!).

Iqbal Qureshi may have lesser hit songs. But, he was really gr8 . All the songs of Love in Shimla, and one ” Phir aane laga yaad wohi pyaar ka aalam,” are few of the rare gems of hindi film music

The lines quoted by you are from another Mukesh ji song from the Film Kanhaiya. The mukhda of the song is “Mujhe tumse kuchh bhi na chaahiye”

If there are more lines in this song then it must be in the audio version. The video and audio versions were recorded separately and they often differered.
