Mora gora ang lai le mohe shyaam rang dai de

on:“Bandini” (1963) was a melancholic movie, and so one assumes its songs to be melancholic too. But not all songs of this movie are sad songs.
Here is a happy song from this movie. It is sung by Lata and picturised on Nutan. The song “mora gora rang lai le mohe shyaam rang dai de” (take away my fair complexion, give me dark complexion) is written by Gulzar and music is composed by S D Burman.
In old Indian mythology, Lord Krishna is depicted as dark and his beloved Radha as fair. Just before the song, Nutan overhears a tale of Krishna which goes something like- “Radha surreptitiously goes to meet Krishna in dark. She has covered her in dark colours, viz blue sari, blue bangles, black kohl etc. Still, when her fair complexion glows in dark, she is afraid of being noticed. So wishes that her fair colour is taken away and she is given dark complexion instead so that she could merge into the darkness.”
Nutan sings this song fantasising her to be Radha.
In case one is familiar with the background information, Gulzar’s creation , which draws from Indian mythological and cultural references is wonderful. Lata sings it beautifully and S D Burman’s music makes this song a memorable song.

Beautiful. Atul, thanks for this one. Another of those songs that doesn’t have any urdu influence (not that urdu influence is bad).
