Jis din se maine tumko dekha hai

Posted on: March 13, 2009

This is one song that I just loved listening to as a kid. It is a wonderful song sung by Rafi.

That is all I knew about that song, that it was a Rafi number. I never got to know any other details about this song till now.

Now that I have accidentally stumbled upon this song yet again, I have come to know many details about this song that come as big surprise.

For instance, this song is a Madan Mohan composition. I could never have guessed that. Secondly, this is from a movie with Amitabh Bachchan in it. The movie is called “Parwana” (1971). Thirdly, Amitabh Bachchan is not the hero of this movie , rather, he is the villain. Navin Nischol ( then a bigger name thanks to the success of “Sawan Bhadon” ) played the hero.

I also realised that this is a duet in fact, and the female voice is not Lata’s but Asha Bhonsle’s.

But the biggest surprise of them all is- this song is omitted from the VCD/DVD of the movie !

What a shock ! Were the makers of this movie out of their minds? I as a pre teen kid could tell about a quality song when I heard one, and I certainly rated this song very high, but not the makers of this movie. So I am not sorry that this movie turned out to be a box office disaster.

It is such a pity that the actual video of this song is not available for the above reason. However, the song sounds as wonderful as it sounded in 1971 when this song was getting played after which it stopped being on the airs because the records of this song were no longer getting made as a result of omission of this song from the movie.

As I have mentioned earlier too, we may have lost quite a few gems like this just because such songs could not be accomodated in their movies. This is a gem of the highest quality and the person who edited this song out of the movie deserved to be kicked out of Bollywood movie industry for this blasphemous act.

This song was written by Kaifi Azmi.

Song-Jis din se maine tumko dekha hai (Parwana) (1971) Singers-Rafi,Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

Jis din se maine tumko dekha hai
is dil me ik sapna sa jaaga hai
izaajat ho to suna doon
Jis din se maine tumko dekha hai
is dil me ek sapna sa jaaga hai
izaajat ho to suna doon
is dil ne jabse tumko paaya hai
kuchh chori chori maine bhi socha hai
gar izaajat ho to bata doon
gar izaajat ho to bata doon

shokhi hai nazaakat hai
nazron me sharaarat hai
aisaa bhi sharmaana kyaa
kah do ke muhabbat hai
kahne ki zaroorat kyaa
baaton ki haqeeqat kya
chalke na nigaahon se
aisi bhi muhabbat kya
kuch khoya khoya dil bhi rahta hai
kuchh chori chori maine bhi socha hai
gar izaajat ho to bata doon
izaajat ho to suna doon

zulfon ko sanwaara bhi
chehre ko nikhaara bhi
ab to de do jaane jaan
baahon ka sahaara bhi
masti ka zamaana bhi
khushiyon ka khazaana bhi
paaya to tumhen paaya
jeene ka bahaana bhi
ab duniya kitni rangeen duniya hai
is dil me ik sapna sa jaaga hai
izaazat ho to suna doon
gar izaajat ho to bataa doon

dil ko na sambhaaloon to
seene se lagaaloon to
hothon ki jo laali hai
usko main churaa loon to
yoon nazren na daalo tum
ab dil ko sambhaalo tum
dekhe na hamen duniya
seene me chhupaa lo tum
kya jaane mujhko dar kyun lagta hai
kuch chori chori maine bhi socha hai
gar izaajat ho to bata doon
Jis din se maine tumko dekha hai
is dil me ik sapna sa jaaga hai
izaajat ho to suna doon
izaajat ho to suna doon

I didn’t recognise this from the lyrics, but the moment it started, of course! this was very very popular: I didn’t know it never appeared in the movie.
And that trivia about Amitabh B is great, and so is the work you have done with scenes from the movie.

The work of showing a few scenes with this song has been done by some other Madan Mohan fan.

Hi: I heard this song for the first time last year and loved it. I also watched the video tape of Parwana, but could not find the song. I replayed the video tape several times (in fast forward mode) trying to locate the song. Then someone posted the movie dvd on YouTube, which also lacked the song. Finally, I borrowed some general scenes from the dvd and posted the song on YouTube. I am glad you to see your review of the song. Thanks for bringing the song to your readers’ attention.

Any fan of lata and asha can make out that the voice in this song is that of Asha and not lata. ( my response)

In my case, there was a gap of 37 years after which I heard this song again. And this time, I obviously had the benefit of hindsight. When I had last heard this song in 1972, I did not have the opportunity to hear the song properly.

“Parwana” was a fresh & modern theme film & MM was asked to compose as per theme of the film … the task was quite different from MM’s usual style of compositions those days. As a challenge, he worked hard to mix & blend his usual melody with western arrangements.
And what a masterpiece he created … Bemisal !!!

This song was picturised in full during shootind of the film but was unfortunately deleted from the film on its release by the producer on the pretext … ” that the song was slowing down the pace of this suspence movie”. The producer indeed did a blunder, no doubt.

I recently listened to the original recording of this gem in MM’s voice while he himself rehersed before composing it.

The melody is a master piece. Yet we are deprived of the the visual appeal and aroma of the song. The great two singers rendered their best justice to this song and music director exemplified his talent of music composition in this song. I wished this song be once again re introduced with the same tune some new film with gorgeous animating video
