Morni baagaan maa

Posted on: March 20, 2009

Here is a song from a relatively newer movie by the standards of this blog. The movie is “Lamhe” (1991).

This song “morni baagaan maa” is based on Rajasthani folk song and the picturisation (on Sridevi and others) shows a Rajasthani folk dance as well. At least I hope it is so, but you never know with Bollywood choreographers.

The song is written by Anand Bakshi and the music directors were Shiv-Hari. Ila Arun and Lata had sung this song.

Song-Morni baagaan maa (Lamhe) (1991) Singers-Ila Arun, Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Shiv Hari

Lyrics

morni baagaan maa bole aadhi raat maa
morni baagaan maa bole aadhi raat maa
chhananachhan choodiyaan
chhananachhan choodiyaan khanak gayi dekh saahibaan
choodiyaan khanak gayi haath maa
morni baagaan maa bole aadhi raat maa

main to laaj ke maare, ho gayi paani paani
sab logon ne sun li hai ri meri prem kahaani
main to laaj ke maare, ho gayi paani paani
sab logon ne sun li meri prem kahaani
munhse baat nikal gayi baat baat maa, baat baat maa
chhananachhan choodiyaan
chhananachhan choodiyaan khanak gayi dekh saahibaan
choodiyaan khanak gayi haath maa
morni baagaan maa bole aadhi raat maa

jaane kaun ghadi mein nikle saajan gharse
main ghoonghat mein jal gayi kitne saawan barse
jaane kaun ghadi mein nikle saajan gharse
main ghoonghat mein jal gayi kitne saawan barse
meri pyaas naa bujhi re barsaat maa, barsaat maa
chhananachhan choodiyaan
chhananachhan choodiyaan khanak gayi dekh sahibaan
choodiyaan khanak gayi haath maa
morni baagaan maa bole aadhi raat maa

sooni sej pe saiyaan saari raat main jaagi
tere peechhe peechhe meri neend to bhaagi
meraa chain bhi gayaa re tere saath maa
tere saath maa
chhananachhan choodiyaan
chhananachhan choodiyaan khanak gayi dekh saahibaan
choodiyaan khanak gayi haath maa

o meraa naiharaa chhoote re maaeri chhaati phoote dhola
o dholaa mat jaa jaa jaa
re dholaa mat jaa jaa jaa …

Lovely song.
I love folk songs in general – they are so earthy.
