Phir tumhaari yaad aayi ai sanam

Here is a song which I do not recall having listened to in the past. It is a qawwaali, and one that appeals to the listener the very first time one listens to it.
In addition to being a qawwali, it is a song where a few warriors are feeling nostalgic about their loved ones who they have left behind. I suppose that was how fauzi bhais amused themselves in pre vishesh jaimala days- by singing songs for their beloved by themselves. 😉
This song from “Rustam Sohrab” (1963) is sung by Rafi, Manna Dey and Saadat Khan. Lyricist is Qamar Jalalabadi, Music director is Sajjad Hussain. And this song is a gem. In fact, I feel like I have discovered a precious gem accidentally and I cannot wait to share my discovery with my readers. So here is this song. Enjoy.

Song-Phir tumhaari yaad aayi (Rustam Sohrab) (1963) Singers-Rafi, Manna Dey, Saadat Khan, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD- Sajjad Hussain
Lyrics
o o
phir tumhaari yaad aayi ai sanam, ai sanam
phir tumhaari yaad aayi ai sanam, ai sanam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
aaa aaa
haal-e-dil yaar ko likhoon kaise
haath dil se judaa nahin hotaa
kis tarah unko bataayen apnaa gham, ai sanam
kis tarah unko bataayen apanaa gham, ai sanam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
tum mere dil mein, meri aankhon mein ho
tum mere kwaabon, meri aahon mein ho
door rahkar bhi judaa honge na ham, ai sanam
door rahkar bhi judaa honge na ham, ai sanam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
allaah qasam, allaah qasam, allaah qasam
jabse deki soorat unki, ham shamaa jalaanaa bhool gaye
rukhsaar ki surkhi kyaa kahiye, phoolon kaa fasaanaa bhool gaye
bas itni kahaanii hai apni, jab aankh mili behosh huye
daaman se hawaa tum kar na sake, ham hosh mein aanaa bhool gaye
kitne pyaare hain mohabbat ke sitam, ai sanam
kitne pyaare hain mohabbat ke sitam, ai sanam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
kyaa lutf aa rahaa thaa
kyaa lutf aa rahaa thaa
kyaa lutf aa rahaa thaa
dilabar ki dillagi se
nazren bhi thi mujhi par, pardaa bhi thaa mujhi se
ho aa
kyaa haseen tasveer thi, allaah qasam, ai sanam
kyaa haseen tasveer thi, allaah qasam, ai sanam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
allaah qasam, allaah qasam, allaah qasam
phir tumhaari yaad aayi ai sanam, ai sanam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam
ham na bhoolenge tumhen, allaah qasam

Translation (By Raja)
Once again I am thinking of you, my beloved
Once again I am thinking of you, my beloved
I will never forget you, I swear by God
I will never forget you, I swear by God
How can I describe to my beloved the (sorry) state of my heart
I am not able to get my hand away from my heart
How do I describe to her my sorrow, my beloved
How do I describe to her my sorrow, my beloved
I will never forget you, I swear by God
I will never forget you, I swear by God
You are in my heart, you are in my eyes
You are in my dreams, you are in my sighs
Though separated we will never be apart, my beloved
Though separated we will never be apart, my beloved
I will never forget you, I swear by God
I will never forget you, I swear by God
From the moment I saw her face, I have forgotten how to light a lamp/candle
What to say of her red face/complexion, it makes me forget the tales of flowers
All I can say is that when our eyes met I lost all consciousness
You could not break yourself away, I forgot to regain consciousness
How endearing are these trials of love, my beloved
How endearing are these trials of love, my beloved
I will never forget you, I swear by God
I will never forget you, I swear by God
What enjoyment I did feel then
What enjoyment I did feel then
At the teasing of my beloved
While her eyes were on me, her pardah (veil) hid her from me
What a beautiful picture that was, I swear, my beloved
What a beautiful picture that was, I swear, my beloved
I will never forget you, I swear by God
I will never forget you, I swear by God

Does this song not fall in category of a qawwali? So beautifully sung. Rafi Saheb at his best.

Thaanks for posting this nice song. It reminded me of the song from Haqeeqat “hoke majabuur mujhe usane bhulaayaa hogaa” because the situation is more or less the same.

I always get confused between this and Mere Dilbar Mujh Per Khafa na Ho, from Dharamputra, two of the greatest Qawwalis.

daaman se hawaa tum kar na sake – You were stunned, unable to react normally, in this case to use your your stole(dupatta) as a fan. This is a normal reaction when someone is suddenly unconscious, people try to fan the person with whatever is on hand.
