Hamko to jaan se pyaari hai tumhaari aankhen

Posted on: March 31, 2009

Here is a song which I remember listening to in my younger days, though I never could find out those days which movie this song was from. That is how it was with loudspeaker songs those days. Unlike radio songs, they would not announce the name of the movie before playing such songs. 😉

Now I find that this song is from a 1972 movie called “Naina” (1972). Seeing that the song (written by Hasrat Jaipuri) has the words “aankhen” in every sentence, the movie maker could well have wanted to call his movie “Aankhen”, but was hampered by the fact that a Dharmendra movie of this name had already been released a few years ago. So the makers of this movie looked into their synonym/ antonym book and realised that Naina was a synonym of Aankhen. And that is how this movie came to be called “Naina”. Wow, what Sherloch Holmesian logical deductions I can come up with at times. 😉

The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri and the music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

And before I forget, it was a boat song, and in some way, it reminds me of the boat song of “The great gambler”. Like that Amitabh Bachchan movie, here Shashi Kapoor and Rajshree are seen seated in a boat in an European city. Could it be the same city of Venice ?

Song-Hamko to jaan se pyaari hain tumhaari aankhen (Naina) (1972) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Hamko to jaan se pyaari hain tumhaari aankhen
haay kaajal bhari madhosh ye pyaari aankhen
Hamko to jaan se pyaari hain tumhaari aankhen
haay kaajal bhari madhosh ye pyaari aankhen
Hamko to jaan se

mast aankhen hain ke gaate huye maykhaane hain
mast aankhen hain ke chalke huye paimaane hain
mast aankhen hain ke gaate huye maykhaane hain
mast aankhen hain ke chalke huye paimaane hain
hamne dekhin nahin aisi to kanwaari aankhen
haay kaajal bhari madhosh ye pyaari aankhen
hamko to jaan se

Nargisi phool hain hans hans ke khili jaati hain
neend ke bojh se sharmaa ke jhuki jatin hain
Nargisi phool hain hans hans ke khili jaati hain
neend ke bojh se sharmaa ke jhuki jatin hain
aur qaatil hain sanam neend se bhaari aankhen
haay kaajal bhari madhosh ye pyaari aankhen
hamko to jaan se

roshani chaand me sooraj me hai jab tak kaayam
jyot roshan rahe aankhon me tumhaari hardam
roshani chaand me sooraj me hai jab tak kaayam
jyot roshan rahe aankhon me tumhaari hardam
ye dua hai ke salaamat rahen pyaari aankhen
haay kaajal bhari madhosh ye pyaari aankhen
Hamko to jaan se pyaari hain tumhaari aankhen
hay kaajal bhari madhoosh ye pyaari aankhen
Hamko to jaan se

a working link.
i am seeing the movie currently and saw that the version where (in order as it appears in the movie) Shashi Kapoor is singing this song to Moushumi Chatterjee who is driving a car and reading a book at the same time, we have heard of drinking and driving even seen singing and driving but this is a first- reading and driving. as if that distraction is not enough she is imagining that Shashi Kapoor is singing this song all around her – in the back seat, passenger seat next to the driver and also on her bonnet. she comes out of her day-dreams when she almost bangs her car into a bus driven by Ajit Singh Deol. small bio data of this Deol- he is Abhay Deol’s father and Dharamendra’s brother
the version where he is romancing Rajashree is later i the movie. both versions are together in this link
