Kuch din pahle..Ek hans ka joda
Posted on: April 9, 2009
Here is a song from “Lajwanti”(1958). It is a song sung by Asha Bhonsle on Nargis.
What a song! This was the thought occuring to me whem I heard this song for the first time (today). The lyrics of Majrooh are written in “shuddh” Hindi and this song is “story” song. Nargis, teaching small school kids tells the kids a story when they insist on listening to one. And she sings a song about a pair of swans and their young one.
It is a beautifully sung song. Even the picturisation is nice. That is, till the penultimate stanza. Then the song takes a sad turn when the song talks about the swans losing their young one and that is where the song stops and the mournful Nargis cannot continue, overcome with grief.
It is obviously a story of her life in the movie. She was seen singing a lori in the earlier song(posted yesterday) and here she is teaching in a school, so obviously tradegy has struck her in a big way after that song. The listener of this song is in heaven for much of the song and then he/she is brought down to terra firma with a big thud in the last stanza. Im am not sure how this movie fared at the box office, but if that movie flopped, then playing with the sentiments of listeners and audiences with such ruthlessness may have caused this box office failure.
Loking in isolation, this song is a superb song, one that I am fortunate to have finally discovered ( thanks to the farmaish of Lalitha). What superb songs this movie has ! Too bad the movie appraently failed to capitalise on them.
PS- Now I know that a young one of swans is called cygnet. Male cygnet in a cob, whereas female cygnet is a pen. Wow, what confusing words for these young ones!

Lyrics
o
kuchh din pahle ek taal mein kamal kunj ke andar
rahtaa thaa, ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
kuchh din pahle ek taal mein kamal kunj ke andar
rahtaa thaa, ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
roz roz roz bhor hote hi jab khil jaate kamal
door door door moti chugne ko hans ghar se jaataa nikal
roz roz roz bhor hote hi jab khil jaate kamal
door door door moti chugne ko hans ghar se jaataa nikal
sandhyaa hote,
sandhyaa hote ghar ko aataa jhoom jhoom ke
kuchh din pahle ek taal mein kamal kunj ke andar
rahtaa thaa, ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
jab jab jab dhal jaataa thaa din taare jaate the khil
so jaate hil-mil ke wo donon jaise lahron ke dil
jab jab jab dhal jaataa thaa din taare jaate the khil
so jaate hil-mil ke wo donon jaise lahron ke dil
chandaa hanstaa,
chandaa hansataa donon kaa mukh choom choom ke
kuchh din pahle ek taal mein kamal kunj ke andar
kaun tha, ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
thi unki ek nanhi si beti chhoti si hansani
donon ke naynon ki wo jyoti ghar ki raushni
thi unki ek nanhi si beti chhoti si hansani
donon ke naynon ki wo jyoti ghar ki raushni
mamtaa gaati, mamtaa gaati aur muskaati jhoom jhoom ke
kuchh din pahle ek taal mein kamal kunj ke andar
rahta tha, ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
ek hans kaa jodaa ek hans kaa jodaa
phir ek din aisaa toofaan aayaa chali aisi hawaa
bechaare hansaa ud gaye re hoke sabse judaa
phir ek din aisaa toofaan aayaa chali aisi hawaa
bechaare hansaa ud gaye re hoke sabse judaa
saagar-saagar, saagar-saagar
saagar-saagar rote hain ab ghoom ghoom ke
ghoom ghoom ke

I saw this movie a couple of times on Doordarshan. Atul, you are right, this movie does put the viewers in an emotional wringer for most of the time and ending is fairly quick. Leaves the viewers unsatisfied.

Thanks Atul for including one of my all time favorite songs. I have cried over this song and the emotions it evoked in me were powerful even before I watched the video, and now that I have seen the video, I want to watch the movie. Maybe I will get it one of these days. This movie has some really great songs, and with an actress like Nargis in it, I am sure the audiences would have been weeping. Of course, it was probably too much emotion, as did happen too often in movies in the 50s and the 60s.
Anyway, thanks again for writing about my farmaish.
