Waadiyaan mera daaman
Posted on: April 9, 2009
During my childhood, I got to hear lots of loudspeaker songs ( viz songs blaring out of loudspeakers) where no details of movies, lyrics and music directors were available. Of course that did not prevent one from enjoying these songs. But since these details were not known, one forgot these songs as they stopped being played on loudspeakers.
By now I have re discovered many such songs from my childhood days.
Here is one more such song, which I got to listen to once again. And thanks to the farmaish by Mr Ashwani Sharma for this song, now I know the name of this movie as well. The movie was “Abhilasha”, which had some outstanding music by R D Burman. Here is this song “waadiyaan mera daaman” sung superbly by Rafi. This song is picturised in the movie on Sanjay Khan and Nanda.
PS-Later I have been informed that this song has a Lata version too. Now the link to the Lata version, including its lyrics (provided by Sudhir jee) has also been included. The Lata version is preceded by Rafi’s voice and then Lata takes over.

waadiyaan mera daaman
raaste meri baanhen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman
raaste meri baanhen
jaao mere siwa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman
jab churaaoge tan tum kisi baat se
jab churaaoge tan tum kisi baat se
shaakhe gul chhed degi mere haath se
apni hi zulf ko aur uljhaaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman
raaste meri baanhen
jaao mere siwa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman
jab se milne lagin tum se raahen meri
jab se milne lagin tum se raahen meri
chand sooraj bani do nigaahen meri
tum kahin bhi raho tum nazar aaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman
raaste meri baanhen
jaao mere siwa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman
raaste meri baanhen
jaao mere siwa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan mera daaman

waadiyaan meraa daaman
raaste meri baahen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
raaste meri baahen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
raaste meri baahen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
jab hasegee kalee
rang waali koi
jab hasegee kalee
rang waali koi
aur jhuk jaayegi
tum pe daali koi
sar jhukaaye huye
tum mujhe paa’oge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
raaste meri baahen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
chal rahe ho jahaan
is nazar se parey
chal rahe ho jahaan
is nazar se parey
wo dagar to
guzarati hai dil se mere
dagmagaate huye
tum yaheen aaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
raaste meri baahen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman
raaste meri baahen
jaao mere siwaa
tum kahaan jaaoge
waadiyaan meraa daaman

There is a Lataji’s version too, that is equally melodious…

jaao mere siwaa tum kahan jaaoge
jab hasegee kalee, rangawaalee koee
aaur jhook jaayegee tum pe daalee koee
sar jhukaye huye, tum mujhe paaoge…
chal rahe ho jahaan, is najar se pare
wo dagar to gujaratee hain, dil se mere

The version tagged as Lata version is actually the Rafi-Lata Duet. Here is a working link for the duet :

Rafi solo version is a beauty, with shades of S. D. Burman.

That is right. If you notice the lyrics of the Lata version, there is a few lines in the beginning in blue color. Also, if you check up the write up above, Atul ji has mentioned clearly that the Lata version is preceded by a few lines in Rafi Sb’s voice and then Lata’s voice takes over to sing the rest of the song.
We may call it a duet, but it is not really a duet in the strict sense of the word.

Sir,
Yes i read the write up. I gave a new link because the link is not working .
The point I am trying to make is that technically it is a duet and not solo. As the mukhda only in Rafi sahab’s voice is not some part of the solo version and just played before the Lata song. It is a separate recording where both singers were together. The Tag above the write up and also the tag with the link is saying ‘Lata solo’ which is not the case.
So this song has two version, a Rafi solo and Rafi-Lata duet.
Regards.

For me too, this is a song from my very early days.
I had heard this song without knowing which movie it was from.
Saw this movie some years ago and was pleasantly surprised to hear the song. Another of those “What ? this song is in THIS movie ?” reactions.
The movie itself was a bit of a dampener. Was good for a fair part and then towards the end, sort of petered away.
This song (and the other “dream sequence” song) are very good, though.
