Tere dwaar khadaa ik jogi

Posted on: April 12, 2009

This song from “Nagin” (1954) must be one of the most hummable songs. All these days, I thought that it was a devotional song.

When I finally watched the song today, I realised that it was a disguise song, where the hero, disguised as a jogi is searching for the heroine , her code being Devi i.e. goddess. What a difficult code. I could never have guessed it.

I am sure this song in any case could well have been used as a prayer. But then singers like Hemant Kumar and Talat Mahmood, even while singing teasing songs, sounded like they were singing bhajans. 😉 And I definitely thought it was a bhajan. May be singing a song looking for devi ( the lady of one’s dreams) can indeed be thought of as one.

Lyrics of Rajinder Krishan are indeed one of the most well known lyrics of all time. Hemant Kumar was the singer as well as music director of this movie. And the music of this song is indeed the kind of music employed in a devotional song. I guess that this song would have been popular among beggars on Bombay local trains of those days.

Song-Tere dwaar khada ek jogi (Nagin) (1954) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics

kaashi dekhi mathuraa dekhi
dekhe teerath saare
kahin na man ka meet mila to
aaya tere dwaare
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
na maange ye sona chandi
maange darshan devi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi

kar ke jatan aaya
man me lagan laaya
ankhiyon me darshan pyaas
kar ke jatan aaya
man me lagan laaya
ankhiyon me darshan pyaas
preet ki iccha prem ki bhiksha
maang raha ye daas
maang raha ye daas
na maange ye sona chandi
maange darshan devi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi

duniya se mukh moda
tere liye jag chodaa
chod diya ghar baar
duniya se mukh moda
tere liye jag chodaa
chod diya ghar baar
ban ban chaana maine
tujhe devi maana maine
sun le meri pukaar
sun le meri pukaar
na maange ye sona chandi
maange darshan devi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
na maange ye sona chandi
maange darshan devi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi
tere dwaar khada ik jogi

Thanks for posting this farmaish of mine, Atul.
I first heard this song when a friend of mine used to sing it in school.
Since that guy used to usually sing KL Saigal songs, for a long time I thought this was a Saigal song.
Only much later I realised it was Hemant Kumar.
And, like you, even I thought it was a bhajan. Only when I saw the video on youtube some years ago, I realised it was the heroine who was the “devi” involved. 🙂
