Phoolon ke rang se

Posted on: April 16, 2009

One reason why many old songs ( 1970s and earlier) are popular is of course to do with nice music in these songs. Moreover, the music directors ( there were many outstanding music directors at that time) recognised the value of lyrics. And they would wait for lyricists to write their songs.

Lyricists like Shailendra, Majrood Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi etc were much respected and held in high esteem by music directors. Some of these music directors, viz Madan Mohan had good commant over Hindi/ Urdu and they could appreciate lyrics. Even those music directors who did not have command over the language also recognised the value of good lyrics and always insisted on working with the best lyricists.

S D Burman was the example of a music director who was not conversant with Hindi/ Urdu but he knew the value of lyrics.

Here is a nice song from “Prem Pujari”. The lyrics of Neeraj ( then a favourite of S D Burman) are just too good, and they indeed play an important role in making this song so popular.

The song was sung by Kishore Kumar and it was picturised on Dev Anand.

Song-Phoolon ke rang se (Prem Pujari) (1970) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

phoolon ke rang se, dil ki kalam se
tujhko likhi roz paati
kaise bataaun, kis kis tarah se
pal pal mujhe tu sataati
tere hi sapne, lekar ke soyaa
teri hi yaadon mein jaagaa
tere khayaalon mein uljhaa rahaa yoon
jaise ke maalaa mein dhaagaa
haan, baadal bijli chandan paani jaisaa apnaa pyaar
lenaa hogaa janam hamen, kayi kayi baar
haan, itnaa madir, itnaa madhur teraa meraa pyaar
lenaa hogaa janam hamen, kayi kayi baar

saanson ki sargam, dhadkan ki veenaa,
sapnon ki geettaanjali tu
man ki gali mein, mahke jo hardam,
aisi juhi ki kali tu
chhotaa safar ho, lambaa safar ho,
sooni dagar ho yaa melaa
yaad tu aaye, man ho jaaye, bheed ke beech akelaa
haan, baadal bijli, chandan paani jaisaa apnaa pyaar
lenaa hogaa janam hamen, kayi kayi baar
haan, itnaa madir, itnaa madhur teraa meraa pyaar
lenaa hogaa janam hamen, kayi kayi baar

poorab ho pachchhim, uttar ho dakkhin,
tu har jagah muskuraaye
jitnaa hi jaaun, main door tujhse,
utni hi tu paas aaye
aandhi ne rokaa, paani ne tokaa,
duniyaa ne hans kar pukaaraa
tasveer teri, lekin liye main, kar aayaa sabse kinaaraa
haan, baadal bijli, chandan paani jaisaa apnaa pyaar
lenaa hogaa janam hamen, kayi kayi baar
haan, itnaa madir, itnaa madhur teraa meraa pyaar
lenaa hogaa janam hamen, kayi kayi baar
kayi, kayi baar
kayi, kayi baar

What a beautiful song. I love it. I was somewhat disappointed with the picturization, though, perhaps because I was not expecting the European setting to go with the lovely Hindi lyrics.

However, that did not keep me from using the song when I decided to post my photos of the gorgeous cherry blossoms that fill the Washington DC area (another foreign setting) in the spring every year:

Many of S D Burman’s best songs are based on some folk songs which have been sung by himself in 40s and 50s. This song is based on a Bangla folk song:
