Haay re wo din kyun

Pt Ravishankar, the renowned sitarist had worked in Bollywood in 1950s and 1960s, before he went West and made his mark in his field. In Bollywood, Ravishankar not only worked as an instrumentalist, he in fact acted as music director in a few Bollywood movies as well.
For example, “Anuradha” (1960) was one movie where Pt Ravishankar was the music director. Here is a song from this movie. It is sung by Lata and the song is written by Shailendra.
The song may have been forgotten along with the movie, but this song is quite nice to listen to.

Song-Haay re wo din kyun(Anuradha) (1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Ravi Shankar
Lyrics
haay re wo din kyun na aaye
haay re wo din kyun na aaye
ja ja ke ritu
ja ja ke ritu laut aaye
haay re wo din kyun na aaye
jhilmil wo taare kahaan gaye wo saare
jhilamil wo taare kahaan gaye wo saare
man baati jale bujh jaaye
haay re wo din kyun na aaye
ja ja ke ritu laut aaye
haay re wo din kyun na aaye
sooni meri beenaa sangeet binaa
sooni meri beenaa sangeet binaa
sapnon me maalaa murjhaaye
haay re wo din kyun na aaye
ja ja ke ritu laut aaye
haay re wo din kyun na aaye

I love this song. Since in your posting of Kaise Din Beete from Anuradha, you said that it seemd like a Madan Mohan creation, I want to make a comment about the lyrics here. While Pt. Ravi Shankar is a genius instrumental performer, he might not be as particular about the lyrics as Madan Mohan was. MM is said to have worked with the lyricist to create a sense of unity between the words and the music rather than making the words fit the tune. Here the “na” in “wo din” is stretched while the “bee” in “Sunee meri beena” is shortened to fit the tune. The “ta” in “sangeet” is lengthened, while the “taa” in “taare” is shortened. One may compare the treatment in MM’s “Meri Veena Tum Bin Roye” from Dekh Kabira Roya.

Thanks for posting the lyrics of this song. Ever since my father passed away, I’ve been trying to get the same. He was one of the few people who had heard of this song. Its so beautiful, and Lela Naidu looks just so lovely as she sings it. Thanks again

राग जन-सम्मोहिनी was Pandit Ravishankar’s innovation.
In राग कलावती , ऋषभ (रे) and मध्यम (म) are वर्जित (forbidden).
राग जन-सम्मोहिनी uses the रे.
This was the first राग जन-सम्मोहिनी based song in Bollywood and from Pandit Ravishankar’s music-director days:
Anuradha(1960) — “हाय रे वो दिन क्यूँ न आए ? जा-जाके ऋतु लौट आए”
This song is picturized on the stunning classical beauty: Leela Naidu — Femina Miss India in 1954 — who featured in the Vogue magazine list of ‘World’s Ten Most Beautiful Women’, along with Maharani Gayatri Devi.

Beautiful songs. Like I have said elsewhere, Anuradha had very good songs. And is a nice movie also.
