Mere pairon mein ghunghroo bandha de

Dilip Kumar was known as tragedy king during the days I was growing up, but he would act in non tragedy roles too, though I was not aware of that in my younger days. And moreover, He was from the earlier generation, and I was growing up with the next generation of heroes ( Rajesh Khanna etc).
Now when Rajesh Khanna is nearly as much of an oldtimer as Dilip Kumar by present day standards, I can appreciate Dilip Kumar better.
Here is a lighthearted song picturised on Dilip Kumar. This song, sung by Rafi was hugely popular, and as happened with me so many times, I was no aware which movie this song was from.
Only now I have come to know that this song was from “Sangharsh”. Naushad was the music director and Shakeel Badayuni had written the lyrics.
Song-Mere pairon me ghunghroo bandhaa de (Sangharsh)(1968) Singer-Rafi ,Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni MD-Naushad
Lyrics
dil paayaa albelaa maine
tabeeyat meri rangeeli
haay
aaj khushi mein maine bhaiyya
thodi si bhang pi lee
ha ha ha ha
haay mere pairon mein
haay mere pairon mein ghunghroo bandhaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
mere pairon mein ghunghroo bandhaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
zaraa jam ke bhaiyyaa
mohe laali chunar, mohe laali chunariyaa odhaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
mere pairon mein ghunghroo bandhaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
kyaa chaal hai tori?
zaraa jhoom le gori
a-haa, waah
haale dole kisi ki nathni
jhoome kisi kaa jhumkaa
har paari dil thaam le apnaa
aisaa lagaaun thumkaa
kaise bhalaa?
aise ding ka tikat phurr ka tikat aa
jab ho kisi ki byaah sagaayi
meri jawaani le angdaayi
meri jawaani le angdaayi
koyi meri haay haay
koyi meri bhi shaadi karaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
mere pairon mein ghunghroo bandhaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
koyi ghoonghat waali mere
dil pe chalaaye chhuriyaan
koyi nainon waali chhode
nainon se phuljhadiyaan
roop hain laakhon aur ik dil hai
aape mein rahnaa bhi mushkil hai
aape mein rahanaa bhi mushkil hai
koyi ankhiyon haay haay
koyi ankhiyon se daaru pilaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
zaraa nain milaa ke
zaraa dil lagaa ke
ek najar se dil bharmaaye
dooji se le jaaye
teekhi najar tu aisi maare
jo dekhe lut jaaye
saari duniyaa tujhpe deewaani
main bhi to dekhoon teri jawaani
main bhi to dekhoon teri jawaani
zaraa mukhde hoy hoy
zaraa mukhde se ghunghtaa hataa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le
mohe laali chunar mohe laali chunariyaa odhaa de
to phir merii chaal dekh le
mere pairon mein ghunghroo bandhaa de
to phir meri chaal dekh le

Yes, I have also heard about their not speaking to each other and apparently this lack of chemistry was obvious in the movie, too. I like the song, though.

This song used to play on AIR every now and then. I remember reading somewhere that Dilip Kumar and Vyjanthimala had huge problems with each other at that time – and were not really on talking terms. They used to come on the sets, very cold towards each other, act and go. (Note that they were a huge pair already by that time with several big hit movies together..Devdas, Naya Daur, Paigam, Gunga Jamna, Leader…). I don’t know what the problem was. It is just something I read years ago.
Though this song was popular, this is not one of Naushad’s more remembered sound tracks. It was late in his career (just like Saathi, Aadmi) – he is more remembered for his 1940s/50s music of course.
