Tu kahe agar

It has been pointed out to me that I have posted only one song from “Andaz”(1949) whereas this movie was one of the biggest musical blockbusters of all time and a milestone in Bollywood history, musically as well as otherwise.
Yes, I also realised that I had posted just one song. But that song ( “kyun pheri nazar” ) was a special one. It was a song which was not even included in the movie and as such it was rare to find. But I agree, I need to post many more songs from this movie in the blog.
So here is a piano cum party song from this movie. This song “tu kahe agar” is a very well known song and it is regarded as a timeless classic. Incidentally many songs from this movie satisfy this description of being called timeless classics.
In this song,Dilip Kumar sings at the piano at a party and a lady dances on this song. In fact, there are quite a few such songs in this movie where Dilip Kumar sits at the piano and sings while some lady dances on the song. So it appears to me that Dilip Kumar plays a musically gifted (Pied Piper ?) person in this movie ? Or am I totally mistaken ?
Nargis leans against the said piano and wathes with appreciation. Dilip Kumar’s eyes are on Nargis all the time and Nargis reciprocates, much to the chagrin and envy of the dancer (who is she ?) and on two occasions, including at the end of the song, she comes close to the piano herself, leaning on it like Nargis, but that does not seem to have much effect on either Dilip Kumar or Nargis.
It is unusual to find Dilip singing in the voice of Mukesh. And in fact there are many such songs in this movie. Raj Kapoor is also there in this movie. I wonder if he has any songs to sing and if so, in whose voice does he sing.
For quite a while, I confused the music team of this movie with that of “Barsaat”. The musical team of this movie consists of Majrooh Sultanpuri and Naushad. And there are more than a dozen songs in this movie.
If I started posting songs from this movie, I will be kept busy for several days, I am sure of that. And I am planning to do just that.

song-Tu kahe agar (Andaz) (1949) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
tu kahe agar, tu kahe agar
tu kahe agar jeewan bhar
main geet sunaataa jaaun
man been bajaataa jaaun
tu kahe agar
aur aag main apne dil ki
har dil me lagaata jaaun
dukh dard mitaata jaaun
tu kahe agar
ho
main saaz hoon tu sargam hai
main saaz hoon tu sargam hai
deti jaa sahaare mujhko
deti jaa sahaare mujhko
main raag hoon tu beenaa hai
main raag hoon tu beenaa hai
jis dam jo pukaare tujhko
aawaaz mein teri har dam
aawaaz milaataa jaaun
aakaash pe chhaataa jaaun
tu kahe agar
ho
in bolon mein, tu hi tu hai
main samjhoon yaa tu jaane, haan jaane
in bolon mein, tu hi tu hai
main samjhoon yaa tu jaane, haan jaane
inmen hain kahaani meri, inmen hain tere afsaane
inmen hain tere afsaane
tu saaz uthaa ulfat kaa
main jhoom ke gaataa jaaun
sapnon ko jagaataa jaaun
tu kahe agar jeewan bhar
main geet sunaataa jaaun
man been bajaataa jaaun
tu kahe agar

I love all the songs in this movie, which I saw with my mother when this movie was already being considered old, at least in my books, since it was a morning show in some obscure theater in Kanpur. Since then, I think I have seen this movie at least 3 or 4 times, just to see this song and the other favorite of mine, “Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe …”, also sung by Mukesh and filmed on Dilip Kumar, not to mention the fact that I have it on a Mukesh DVD as well as on multiple CD’s and cassettes. I may as well confess, I fell in love with the young and handsome Dilip Kumar, and even my husband agrees that he looks great in this movie! So this is a special treat that you are going to post all the songs of this movie, one by one!
I could be wrong, but I don’t think Raj Kapoor sings any songs in this movie, in fact, and his role is almost a negative role here.
Thanks for the song, Atul!
