Lag jaa gale ke phir ye haseen raat ho na ho

I have posted many Lata-Madan Mohan creations in this blog. Most of these songs are easily timeless classics. And they are all precious gems, which can be listened to many times, without getting bored.
Here is an extremely moving Lata- Madan Mohan composition from “Woh Kaun Thi” (1964). Raja Mehdi Ali Khan deserves great praise for coming up with this song. It is not just a song, it is high class poetry. Thanks to Lata’s singing and Madan Mohan’s music, indeed this poetry has lived on.
Just imagine the poignancy of the situation. A girl, who has yet to enjoy life is diagnosed with an incurable disease and she has only a few days to live. What does she do. What are the thoughts going within her mind ? How would she react to it ?
Raja Mehdi Ali Khan has captured the poignancy of the situation so amazingly well. And then Madan Mohan and Lata have used this lyrics to come up with a gem.
The song is indeed one of the most moving songs created in Bollywood. Madan Mohan and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan deserve to live on in our memories for just this song. Of course, they have created many many gems for us to savour.
PS- I was inspired to post this song after Raja shared his memories of 30 years ago, when he heard a school girl singing this song in a school get together just before summer vacation. When the schools opened after summer vacation, she did not return. She was no more as she suffered from the incurable blood cancer. So she sang this song to bid farewell to the world. Raja says that whenever he listens to this song, he is reminded of that girl singing this song. And now, whenever I listen to this song, I will be reminded of her too.
I have provided the translation of this song with this post, which Raja himself has provided while sharing this tale.
Song-Aa lag jaa gale (Woh Kaun Thi) (1964) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
lag jaa gale
hmm
haseen raat
hmm
lag jaa gale
ke phir ye haseen raat ho na ho
shaayad phir is janam mein mulaaqaat ho na ho
lag jaa gale
ke phir ye haseen raat ho na ho
shaayad phir is janam mein mulaaqaat ho na ho
lag jaa gale.. e.. e
hamko mili hain aaj, ye ghadiyaan naseeb se
hamko mili hain aaj, ye ghadiyaan naseeb se
ji bhar ke dekh lijiye hamko qareeb se
phir aapke naseeb mein ye baat ho na ho
shaayad phir is janam mein mulaaqaat ho na ho
lag jaa gale… e… e
paas aayiye ke ham nahin aayenge baar-baar
paas aayiye ke ham nahin aayenge baar-baar
baahen gale mein daal ke ham ro len zaar-zaar
aankhon se phir ye pyaar ki barsaat ho na ho
shaayad phir is janam mein mulaaqaat ho na ho
lag jaa gale ke phir ye haseen raat ho na ho
shaayad phir is janam mein mulaaqaat ho na ho
lag jaa gale… e… e

Translation (provided by Raja)
Come, give me a hug, we may never see such a beautiful night again
Maybe, in this birth, we never get to meet again
We are fortunate to have these precious moments today
Come, see me, up close, to your heart’s content
Maybe you never get this chance again
Maybe, in this birth, we never get to meet again
You come here to me, for I will not keep coming to you
Let me embrace you and cry my heart out
Maybe this outpouring of tears of love from my eyes never happens again
Maybe, in this birth, we never get to meet again

Thanks for sharing this story related to an amazingly beautiful song, which makes it even more memorable. I had thought that Woh Kaun Thi was some sort of ghost story and had paid little attention to the words.

One star for a 5-star song?
Probably, this was Madan’ Mohan’s first film which completed a silver jubilee run but Filmfare award eluded him.
