#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa-1977)
————————————

Today’s song is from the film ‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa-1977’. I have earlier presented a song from this movie which has been close to my heart since many years, and had shared lyrics for one song from this movie which I liked very much. This movie has some good songs and a few of them have been permanently embedded in my memory ever since I watched it in ‘1977’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my younger brothers and cousins at Akola . This must in the summer vacations of that year ‘1977’. Also, I vaguely remember that this movie was given a ‘tax free’ status.

From the year ‘1977’ I remember to have watched movies like ‘Agent Vinod’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Chaachaa Bhateejaa’, ‘Chhailaa Baaboo’, ‘Dharam Veer’, ‘Dildaar’, ‘Dream Girl’, ‘Hum Kisise Kam Nahin’, ‘Khoon Paseenaa’, and ‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa’. May be we also watched ‘Yahi Hai Zindagi’, but I could not recall it now. ‘1977’ is the year mainly remembered for the successful movies by Manmohan Desai like ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Chaachaa Bhateejaa’, ‘Dharam Veer’ and ‘Parvarish’. Other prominent movies of this year were ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin’, ‘Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye’, ‘Apnaapan’, ‘Khoon Paseenaa’, ‘Gharonda’, ‘Inkaar’, ‘Swaami’, ‘Kinaaraa’, ‘Shatranj Ke Khilaadi’, ‘Bhoomika’, and ‘Khattaa Meethhaa’. I think ‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa’ also deserves a to be in this list as this was a well-made, well watched and well-appreciated by the audience even if it was not a highly successful movie.

Today I present one more song from this movie which I like very much and I often break into humming it. I had never forgotten this song even after the passage of many years. The lyrics are nice, and its soulful singing by all the singers leaves deep impact on me every time I listen to it. I hope readers will also enjoy listening to this song.

‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa’ (passed by Censor Board on 28.02.1977) was directed by Ashok Bhushan for ‘Saain Shyam Movies’. It was presented by Manoj Kumar and Saain devotees. And the movie was produced by ‘Sarla Charities Trust’. Pandurang Dixit was the co-director and production controller of this movie. The cast of this movie included Sudhir Dalavi as ‘Saainbaabaa’, with Manmohan Krishna, Shrikant Moghe, Raj Mehra, B.M. Vyas, Birbal, Preetam Beli, Chanda, Vatsala Deshmukh, Ratnamala, Suman Dharmadhikari, Jyotsana Kirpekar, Bhavna, Nazeer Kashmiri, C.S. Dubey, Master Titu, Master Raju,

It also had Usha Chavan, ‘Laxman’ Chawla, Kumari Mahalaxami and Saain devotees in special appearance. And also making special appearance in the movie were Rajendra Kumar, Prem Nath, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha and Manoj Kumar, Madan Puri, Sachin, Kishan Dhawan, Paintal, Dheeraj, Satish, Kuljeet.

This movie was based on Govindrao Dabholkar’s ‘Sri Saain Satcharitra’ and experiences of devotees of Saainbaabaa. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Manoj Kumar. Dev Kishan wrote the story of this movie and was also the associate writer of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by V. V. Kamat. Audiography for this movie was done by Raghuvir Date while art direction was done by Kanu Desai. And Special effects were by Dahyabhai.

This movie had nine songs in it that were written by Manoj Kumar, Pandurang Dixit and Dev Kishan. Music for this movie was composed by Pandurang Dixit. Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Jani Babu, Anoop Jalota, Anuradha and Dilraj Kaur had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this song is composed by Pandurang Dixit.

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi, Jani Babu, Anup Jalota, and Anuradha. On screen we can see Manmohan, Vatsala Deshmukh, Dheeraj, Paintal, Madan Puri, Raj Mehra, and others ( I am unable to identify couple of the female actors lip syncing the song and few other male actors). We can also see Sudhir Dalvi, Birbal, Bharat Vyas and others in the picturisation of this song.

In the movie this song happens when Saint Saain baabaa leaves his body and travels to help his devotee (Tahsildar Chandorkar and his daughter who is about to deliver a child) on the way his meeting with Baijaa Bai. Before that Baabaa had told his devotee that if his body has no indication of life nobody should worry and cry and ask Shyama to write ‘tera saain yahaan thhaa, yahaan hai, yahaan rahegaa’. Saain baabaa’s lifeless body stays around seventy-two hours before he come backs to life and into his body, after this song. (Meanwhile his opponents had already prepared a site for his cremation.)

Let us now listen to this wonderful song.

Lyrics for the song are by Manoj Kumar and music is composed by Pandurang Dixit.

#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Kraanti-1981’. This was one of the biggest movies of our times when people like me were still growing up or had just entered their teens. I still vividly remember the summer of 1981 when we had watched this movie in the near-by city Akola (Maharashtra). This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.01.1981. Unlike now, when movies are released simultaneously in all places, it would take two-three months for the movies to reach the theatres then.

I also remember the discussions among elders at home and seniors in our friend circle as to how Manoj Kumar had put everything at stake (including selling his property to finance the film) to make this movie and his hard work and dedication paid off. Public praised the movie and made it a blockbuster hit. After the success of the film, articles appeared in film magazines and print media where Manoj Kumar stated that “‘Kraanti’ ne mujhe mera sab kuchh lautaa diya”.

“Kraanti-1981” was produced & directed by Manoj Kumar for his home productions ‘V.I.P Films’. It had Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Sarika, Nirupa Roy, Prem Chopra, Pradeep Kumar, Dheeraj Kumar, Shashikala, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Paintal Birbal, Jairaj, Agha, Kishore Kapoor, Ram Mohan, Bhagwan, Sudhir Dalvi, Tom Alter, Manmohan, Shammi, Lalita Kumari, Preeti Ganguly, Gufi Paintal, Datey, Rajan Kapoor, Kamaldeep, Veeru Devgan, Raj Singh, Gurbachan, Habib, Panthulu, Shukla, Darshan, Inayat, Nutan, Sayeed, Mustafa, B.B. Sahni, Master Aditya, and debutant Kunal Goswami and others.

Readers who have watched this movie must be aware about the story of this movie. Nevertheless I am reproducing below what is mentioned at the beginning of this movie on screen;

“Kraanti” is inspired from the martyrs of Indian struggle for freedom during 1825 to 1875 A.D. but remained unknown in the pages of history. This film is dedicated to that anonymous revolutionary farmer who took oath to free the motherland and lit the torch of ‘Kraanti’, who was he?”

Now we all know that the farmer is nobody else but Dilip Kumar … and Manoj Kumar played his son in the movie. He has a brother Shashi Kapoor and Nirupa Roy plays mother to both of them. Rest is the best of all ingredients of drama, action, emotions, songs etc required for a ‘blockbuster movie’ and should be enjoyed by watching the movie I think 🙂 (Though if possible in the future I can take you through the story of this movie with some of its ‘iconic’ dialogues like ‘Shambhu Singh ka dimaag – do dhaari talwaar’ (This is the famous lecherous character on screen of Hindi Cinema- Prem Chopra – who else!! 🙂 )

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by the famous duo Salim-Javed. Dialogues for this movie were written by Manoj Kumar himself and he had also done the editing of this movie. Lyrics for the songs in this movie were by Manoj Kumar and Santosh Anand and music was composed by the great music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

This movie has seven songs including one two-part song. Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Minoo Purushottam, Shailendra Singh and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

On music front the songs of this movie are very good and in fact this is one of the best albums of composer Laxmikant-Pyarelal from the decade of 1981-1990. There were many others too.

Three songs from this movie “Kranti-1981” had appeared in the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala’ of the year ‘1981’. These three songs covering different emotions were ‘zindagi ki naa toote ladi- at number two (at number one it was ‘mere angne mein from ‘Laawaaris-1981’ 🙂 ), ‘chanaa zor garam’ at number six and ‘looie shamasha’ at number twenty-six. Apart from these three songs the other four songs from this movie are also nice hummable songs and were quite popular during those days. Out of the total seven songs in this movie five were penned by Santosh Anand and two were penned by Manoj Kumar himself. The songs that featured in the ‘Annual Binaca Geetmala-1981’ are all written by Santosh Anand.

Today I present a song written by Manoj Kumar from this movie. The song is a popular ‘Maata ki bhent’ song. It is part of all popular compilations brought out by music companies on ‘Maata Devotional Songs’. This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Minoo Purushottam.

In the movie this songs appears at three different occasions and it played in the back ground on screen. The first part of this song is played when the King after giving permission to the British to use their port for shipping activities. The King visits the town temple for offering prayers to the ‘devi’ and seeking the blessing of the goddess for his sister who is expecting a child. The second time only the ‘mukhdaa’ of this song is played (which in the audio version is the beginning of the song)in the background when Rana Sanga (Dilip Kumar) declares war against the British and attacks the fort. The third part of the song happens when Sanga (Dilip Kumar) is about to hang Shakti (Shashi Kapoor) who is Sanga’s son but he Sanga is not aware of that. When Shakti is about to be hanged the prayer sound from the temple is heard and Shakti’s hanging is postponed for the next day as Sanga has to visit the temple of ‘devi maata’. When Sanga reaches the temple he sees his wife (Nirupa Roy) there and both of them meet after a long time. During this meeting Nirupa Roy also tells Sanga about Shakti being their younger son.

As mentioned above Manoj Kumar wrote the lyrics of this song. Four songs penned by Manoj Kumar have already been posted on the blog earlier, and few more may be coming in the future, as there are songs written by him for movies like ‘Shirdi Ke Saibaba-1977’, ‘Kranti-1981’, ‘Painter Babu-1983’, ‘Kalaakaar-1983’, ‘Ricky-1986’, ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan-1987’, ‘Clerk-1989’, ‘Santosh-1989’, ‘Jai Hind-1999’, ‘Maalik Ek-2010’ etc.

Enjoy this beautiful ‘maata bhajan’ as we are still celebrating the ‘sharadiya navratri festival’ in our country. In the state of ‘Gujarat’, festivities are going on in full swing. Temples and markets have been decorated. Garba’ grounds are especially decorated and people are performing ‘Garbas’ with full religious fervour. Songs and music can be heard on loud speakers (or stereo speakers).

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
(Down Memory Lane with songs of Mukesh)
————————————————————————
(A tribute to Singer Mukesh on his Remembrance Day 27th Aug’2023)
——————————————-———————————

Readers of this blog are aware that this year is the ‘birth centenary year’ of the legendary singer Mukesh (22.07.1923 – 27.08.1976). Earlier we had a few posts on the blog for the birth centenary celebrations. When our respected Sudhir ji and Mahesh ji started presenting posts with Mukesh songs I was under the impression that there will be post on every day starting from 22nd July to 27th August (which is Mukesh’s Remembrance Day) since many Mukesh songs are yet to be posted here. That did not happen. But there were some Mukesh related posts till his birth anniversary …

In the case of remaining Mukesh songs to be posted, I am under confusion whether that song is going to be taken by Mahesh ji or not? 🙂 Sometimes (or most of the times) I seek confirmation from him.
In one recent post of Mahesh ji, I had commented and mentioned that I woul;d also be sharing a write-up with a Mukesh song from a film of seventies.

Here is that article which I would like to share. The songs of Mukesh are very much the part of my life. I used to listen to his songs frequently during my cassette listening days. These songs have been there in the moments of struggle, happiness, joy, despair, disappointment, inspirational and motivating depending on the ‘phase of emotions’ I was going through in my life.

I was born in the year 1968. The two oldest songs of Mukesh that I became aware of are ‘chal akelaa, chal akelaa, chal akelaa aa’ and ‘duniyaa se jaanewaale jaane chale jaate hain kahaan’. Even today When I listen to these songs, they transport me back to the era when I was a child and these songs would be playing on radio.

Other Mukesh songs too got embedded on my impressionable mind either through listening on the radio and/or by watching the movies containing those songs with the elders in the family. One such song was ‘wo pari kahaan se laaun …ye gangaaram ki samajh’. My uncles used this song to tease me during family get together. ( I used to get irritated when they called me as ‘Gangaaram 🙂 ). The other songs were from movies like ‘Hariyaali Aur Raastaa-1962’ which was a family favorite. I remember to have watched it multiple times with my uncles, grandmother, aunts, parents etc.

I remember that one of my Uncles had bought a record player. He had one LP record of the movie ‘Be-imaan’. it’s’ title song – ‘jai bolo beimaan ki’ is among the memorable songs of those days for me.

As I grew up, I became aware of two patriotic songs sung by Mukesh. These songs were my favorites during school days. These were also frequently played on loud speakers and radio during celebrations of Independence Day and Republic Day of our country.

These are the songs ‘chhodo kal ki baatein kal ki baat puraani’ and ‘honthhon pe sachchaayi rehti hai’. I learnt these songs by heart and I used to sing them (in my own voice 🙂 ).

My school going years beginning from standard 7th up to passing out of matriculation exams in 1983 was the phase of movie watching for me. During those years, I got to watch many of the old ‘black & white’ movies (in our colony club e.g. ‘Nazraana-1961’, ‘Kanhaiyya-1959’, ‘Aashiq-1962’ etc. and movies like ‘Deewaana-1967’ etc ). They often had songs sung by Mukesh. Moreover current movies of that time too had songs sung by Mukesh that left permanent impression on my impressionable mind. In addition to watching movies, I was heavily into listening to songs played on radio programmes such as ‘Vividh Bharati’ & ‘Urdu Service of AIR’.

I am listing a few such songs heard during those days that I used to like a lot.

Aaya hai mujhe phir yaad wo zaalim (also the other song ‘bahaaron ne mera chaman loot kar’ from the same movie), Main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon (this was obviously much before the I got into the ‘Sahir –era’), ‘Ik din bik jaayegaa maati ke mol’, ‘Tu shaitaanon ka sardaar hai’, ‘Chandan sa badan’, ‘Aansoo bhari hain ye jeewan ki raahen (this is also the one which I learned by heart and …)’, ‘Phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein’, ‘Chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa’, ‘Aa laut ke aaja mere meet’, ‘Dil lootne waale jaadugar’, ‘Saarangaa teri yaad mein’, Dil Hi To Hai’ (all songs sung by Mukesh), ‘Bade armaanon se rakhaa hai balam teri kasam’, ‘main aashiq hoon bahaaron kaa’…

Then there were songs like ‘do jaasoos karen mehsoos’, ‘ye duniya ek numberi to main dus numberi’, ‘pari re tu kahaan ki pari’, ‘tere hamsafar geet hain tere’, ‘kuchh aise bandhan hote hain’, ‘saat ajoobe is duniya mein’, ‘ham donon milke kaagaz pe dil ke’, ‘Tan man dhan sab hain tera’, ‘Sansaar hai ik nadiyaa’ etc etc …

I am only mentioning here those songs that were special to me or songs which I like most at that stage of my life. There were obviously many songs of Mukesh which were frequently heard and those which were very popular and they became part of my collection – ‘cassette collection’ – later.

The two years from 1983 to 1985 was another phase of movie watching for me and also this was the period that was a ‘peak period’ as a Rajesh Khanna fan for me when I watched most of the new and old movies of Rajesh Khanna in theatres, TV, Video Parlors etc. So, when I get to watch the movie ‘Raaz-1967’, ‘Maryaadaa-1971’ etc then I liked these songs much more ‘dil sambhaale sambhaltaa nahin aaj to’, ‘zubaan pe dard bhari daastaan chali aayi’ , Anand-1970 (all songs by Mukesh), ‘jis gali mein tera ghar na ho baalmaa’, ‘haan to main kya keh rahaa thhaa’, ‘phool aahistaa phenko’

This routine got further extended from 1985 to 1988 during my stay at Parli Vaijnath. By then cassette players have become a ‘norm’ and I too bought a ‘mono cassette player’ on installment in 1986. I had started working since April’1985. During this period while I was getting compilation of songs prepared by me and getting them recorded for my ‘Boss’ and for my personal collection too. So I got recorded a ‘Mukesh sings for Raj Kapoor’ in TDK90. Then I also got film combinations recorded like ‘Shree 420-Aawaaraa’, ‘Jis Desh Mein Gangaa Behti Hain-Mera Naam Joker’, ‘Kabhi Kabhi- Silsilaa’ etc.
Pre-recorded albums like ‘Andaaz-Baabul’ were getting added to my collections ‘swiftly’ 🙂

The pre-recorded compilations from HMV which my Boss was buying frequently and I too bought many during my tour to our Head Office – Delhi also introduced me to many Mukesh songs which I liked most. These included songs like … ‘koi bulaaye aur koi aaye (Moods & Memories – Mukesh), ‘hari bhari vasundhara hai neelaa neelaa ye gagan’, ‘khushi ki wo raat aa gayi koi geet bajne do’, ‘cheen o arab hamaara’ (much before the Sahir phase for me was yet to come:) ), ‘sajanwaa bairi ho gaye hamaar (for that matter all songs sung by Mukesh of ‘Teesri Kasam’), ‘Sada khush rahe tu jafaa karne waale’ (Jubilee Hits of Rajendra Kumar) etc etc.

During this period one of my colleagues was a pure Mukesh fan and he used to listen to songs sung by Mukesh only. I was wondering how one can like only Mukesh songs so much? But that also motivated me to explore Mukesh songs further.

In HMV’s compilations for ‘duet songs’ of the various decades there were many duet songs sung by Mukesh. I may have mentioned some above and would like to add these ones further … ‘chori chori jo tumse mili to log kya kahenge’, ‘tumse kuchh kehna hai gar tum kuchh kehne do’, ‘tum roothhi raho main manaataa rahoon’, ‘dekho mausam kya bahaar hai’, ‘maine dekhi jag ki reet meet sab’, ‘bikhraa ke zulfein chaman mein na jaanaa’, ‘humsafar mere humsafar’..

When HMV had started the ‘music mail’ scheme I had also taken its’ membership and I remember I had then ordered among other cassettes one of Raj Kapoor or Mukesh Hits because it had this song ‘tum aaj mere sang hans lo tum aaj mere sang gaa lo’ though the album contained some songs which I already had.

Then I got posted at Kota (Rajasthan) and during my stay there another phase of getting recorded albums/compilations happened where I remember I got ‘Pehchaan-Beimaan’, ‘Anaari-Chhaliya’ like combinations recorded. Then I got to know about the rendition of ‘Sunderkaand’ by Mukesh, either somebody suggested me or I read about it, so I added this ‘divine’ album to my collection and used to listen it then.

From the above period I would like to mention two songs separately which I must have heard on radio and like them very much but they keep me eluding till the internet age. I was getting to listen them sometime on radio but was not aware the name of their movie and other details. And these were not featuring in any of the compilations then.
‘gardish mein hon taare naa ghabraanaa pyaare’, ‘ek hasrat thhi ke aanchal ka mujhe pyaar mile’

From Kota I was transferred to Phulpur near Allahabad (1996-98) where I spent two years. Phulpur is a small town and whenever we get to visit there in the market I was always looking for cassettes. One day I bought a cassette containing ‘saawan ke geet’ and I was very happy that day because the album was having this song ‘aye baadal jhoom ke chal’ which I think was not available in the popular albums. (This was a ‘T-series’ cassette).

After the ‘All Time Great’ series HMV brought the ‘The Golden Collection’ series and as usual many more albums keep adding to my collection including Mukesh songs.

Later on the CDs/DVDs took over and listening to cassettes was getting reduced and nowadays even the cassettes are lying in the drawers since many years now. Even the CD/DVDs are out of routine now…

From ‘2008’ onwards I landed into Sahir era so the songs from ‘Phir Subah Hogi’, ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ etc had become a routine, and songs from movies like ‘Dilli Ka Daada’ which I was not aware became known to me where Mukesh songs were also there.

After getting associated with this blog I got to know and listen to the many lesser heard and rare songs of Mukesh which I had not heard so far.
I also got the opportunity to share Mukesh songs though there were not many of his songs remaining to be posted. Still I was very happy to share the songs like ‘kahaani kismat ki’, ‘tu miley to poochhoon tujh se’, ‘dil se dil ki dor bandhi jo’, ‘anuraagi man sab kuchh seh le’ which I am very happy to have shared on the blog. Also I was very happy to share the song from ‘Romeo In Sikkim-1975’ – ‘tum hi to ho’, and ‘Shri Krishna Arjun Yuddh-1971’ – ‘kiskee dharti kiskaa gaam’ recently on the blog. Still there are songs from movies like ‘Ek Bechaara’-‘naach haseena naach’ etc. which I like and would like to see them coming here as early as possible.

The journey continues and the songs of Mukesh will be forever with us till HFM exists on this planet …“maanjhi naiyya dhhoondhhe kinaaraa … kabhi na kabhi to milan hogaa tumse hamaaraa aa”… Singer Mukesh left this planet when I was just eight years old in 1976, but his voice had been always with me in my journey of life and it will be there always with my soul further…

For today’s presentation and as a tribute to Mukesh I have taken a song from my younger days from the decade of ‘seventies’. This is from the movie ‘Dus Numberi-1976’. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh. On screen Hema Malini and Manoj Kumar lip sync the song and perform with other artistes also visible.
Lyrics for this song are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

This song featured at number 24 in the ‘annual Binaca Geetmala List of 1976’. The other song from the same movie i.e. ‘duniya ek numberi to main dus numberi’ also featured in this list at number 10 ( 🙂 a coincidence?)

Let us enjoy the song now …

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Prem ka rog badaa buraa)
——————————————-——————————

#Claimer ( 🙂 ) #
“Today’s article is inspired from a real-life story and is based on real life experiences happening in our day to day life”

Any ‘resemblance’ of the story/character mentioned in the article is much expected (and is not a mere ‘coincidence’) with ‘everyman’/ ‘everywoman’s life especially who have been ‘immersed’ in love sometime in their life, and/or could not turned into a lifetime relationship.
Some of them could be ‘Hindi movie buffs’ and lovers of HFM (especially the songs of love –and songs of milan and judaai etc etc.) for which the author should not be held responsible or criticized or punished in ‘any’ form 🙂

So, the ‘claimer’ above would have given some hint about the article here today. Aaj ham dil ki baatein karenge or it will be more accurate to say ki aaj ham ‘toote’ huye dil ki baatein karenge 🙂

So, here we begin this story …

I have one of my childhood friends who is closed to me, and we two have many things in common. His life also has the similar ‘struggle’ and many similar incidents happened in my life. We were classmates from KG to 12th standard and both of us had to take to job early in our life leaving the formal education after 12th standard.

Well, whenever we are together we often discuss many things and refresh our childhood memories- memories related with cricket, of watching films, and memories of film songs of course!

During all such meetings and the discussions therein there would always be the discussion about the ‘crush’ this guy had in school days. If our meeting happens on weekends and accompanied by ‘drinks’ sometimes it would end with listening various songs from the seventies to pre-eighties and even singing and dancing with on the tunes.

Here we begin the story of this guy (my friend, hereinafter refer to as ‘hero’ of our story today).

This is sometime during 1977-1978.

So it happened that a new girl joined us in when we were learning in standard seventh when first semester had been over. Her father was a class two officer. Our parents were from class four employees.

Over the period this guy developed a liking for this girl and with supportive talks among friends group he fall in love – yes one sided only. In those times it would take time to open your heart so easily.

All of us were a staying in a small colony for the electricity board employees. So it would so happen on ‘Dushehra’ or other festivals and special occasions that all us would visit to all families in the colony and greet them. Our parents would also accompany us on such occasions. On all such occasions this boy and girl would meet and our hero would take all such meetings a chance to become friendlier with this girl.

Slowly this talk spread in the class and in the colony about this guy and this girl. Still everything was not as open and since all of us were still considered as ‘children’ nobody was as serious in this matter as this guy was. He started following this girl and dreaming about her. And then he also fall in love with all the golden oldies from Hindi movies ‘sau saal pehle mujhe tumse pyaar thaa’, ‘ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar’, ‘phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein’, ‘suhaani raat dhhal chuki’ etc etc.

As days passed , this guy had seriously fallen in love with this girl, with the girl totally unaware about this. When ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ came this guy easily related his character with the young Mayur (the young Sikandar) in the movie and this ‘girl’ was his ‘memsaab’ since she comes from a upper class family.

More than two years passed easily with our hero shining in the class as ‘monitor’, his friends making stories of him and this ‘girl’, our hero ‘burning’ himself in the ‘pyaar ki aag’ sometimes, or taking overdose of playing cricket etc etc. All the legendary stories of ‘Laila Majnu’ type going through his mind.

Finally the day arrived when the news came that the girl’s father was transferred to Koradi Thermal Power Station, near Nagpur.

Now that year was – ‘1982’- when we landed in on an important milestone of our life – standard tenth. We had to appear for board exams and that was an important year for anybody’s life and career.

This guy told his mother (in those days you cannot share something like this to your father. It was ‘highly hazardous ’and could have invited ‘beating blue and black 🙂 ) that he wants to go to Koradi to meet this girl. His mother was a working woman and she tried to make him understand this was not the right time for him for these things and he should focus on studies first and then think about this later after some years. For the time being the matter was put in the ‘cold storage’, but our hero silently suffered missing the heroine.

Years passed and our hero’s parents were also transferred to other location of the state electricity board’s unit in Marathwada region. So now the ‘geographical gap’ become wider than earlier which was from Akola to Nagpur.

After fairing good at the standard tenth exams our hero somehow could not fair good in his 11th and 12th standard studies’ as the subjects were not of his likings (same like me 🙂 ). And he focused more on cricket and watching Hindi movies especially of Rajesh Khanna.

So after 12th he took some job temporarily, thinking that he would return to studies later. But it did not happen and he continued his work life further forever.

In the meanwhile he was always missing this girl and once he gets chance to visit Nagpur for some official work. He visited his Uncle at Koradi and in the same colony he also met some of his childhood friends who were his classmates earlier. With the help of a friend he finds out what this girl was doing. She was pursuing medical studies (MBBS) at Nagpur (Mayo College (then) in Nagpur). So our hero with this friend visits the girl in the Hospital, but fortunately or unfortunately she didn’t recognize him and our hero’s friend was more in shock than our hero was (  ). He come back from Nagpur and shares the story to his bosses where he was working. His boss advised him to forget all and focus on career as he should be supporting his parents and brothers who came from a middle class family and since he was also the elder among the children he should be taking more responsibility (?  ).

Well, our hero decided that before leaves this ‘story’ why not to vent out his feeling to the girl so that he would not have any regrets in life further. Because this girl had become a regular feature in his dreams and that would stir his heart only to increase his craving for her. (tujhko pukaare mera pyaar … aaja main to mitaa hoon teri chaah mein…)
So he thought that may be after venting out his feelings will give him relief and may help him to forget her if she did not have the same love for him too.

So, he wrote all his thoughts on paper (which was a ten page letter written on both sides of a long ‘ruled paper’ ) and posted her.

***

teri zulfon se judaayi to nahin maangi thhi ee ee ee….

The heroine didn’t respond to our hero’s letter…

All sad and melancholic songs become his companion and he continued his journey for the future.…

He had to leave the home state or his job postings and years passed.

Our hero finally got married in ‘1994’ to a girl suggested by his parents. And the couple started their family life happily and had two daughters. Though our hero didn’t keep anything hidden and had told his wife about the happenings in his life.

No communication or contact happened with the heroine thereafter.

***

Our hero struggled hard. Completed his formal education via distance courses and also keep growing at professional front too.

Years passed … our hero still having the ‘bachpan ki muhabbat ko’ feeling in a corner of his heart…

In between whenever he had to visit Nagpur he used to look for his childhood friends and their whereabouts.

Internet and mobile connectivity had made inroads into Indian society … TV take a new ‘avtaar’ from ‘Doordarshan’ to ‘cable tv’ etc etc…

Advent of Internet and social media become platform for people to look for information about their lost contacts …

The ‘hero’ also took advantage of this and keep searching for the girl on internet. Sometimes getting results her name in the list of pass-out students from the university she was studying at Nagpur …

But still he was not aware where she was …

It so happened that after spending over twenty years outside the state he got an opportunity to stay in Nagpur for his job 🙂

He resumed the search … after all it is not easy to ‘forget your first love’ in life …

He got her address in Nagpur and thought to meet her, but returned back from mid-way that it was not morally right to do this after so many years … but just once … he wanted to meet her and see her … (bas ek baar nazar bhar ke usey dekh loon) 

***
But destiny has some other thoughts. This guy had to leave Nagpur after two years and move elsewhere outside the state.

Years passed …. Our hero had a job-stint abroad and returned back after three years … Covid2019 happened… this fellow lost his new job in India and lost in depression with diagnosis of OCD. Medication started … he got a new job after few months and everything was again going normal … but somehow his heart still craving for the childhood days, and whereabouts of the girl…

Now the latest searches were not showing any result he earlier had though they still mentioned the same address of the heroine..

(roke zamaana chaahe roke khudaayi tumko aana padega) …:)

Hero was experimenting with his searches so once it so happened that he looked for the heroine’s father’s contact on ‘mukh-pustak’ and he got him there !!!
The heroine’s father had contacts of Heroine and her two sisters. And slowly our hero opened the contact page of the Heroine and with goose bumps get to see her latest photo after a gap of almost forty long years … the same beauty the same radiance …

Searching more information about her it was known that she now is renowned doctor in Nagpur city and had married a doctor. She too had two daughters (like our Hero has). And more importantly her phone number was also given there on the internet …

After getting her number he texted her about him and proposing an idea of ‘reunion’ of classmates. But no reply came. He tried to contact her but some technical glitch prevented the communication to happen. After few attempts the girl blocked his number without any communication happening. Request for adding friend is still pending …

Haunting dreams resumed again … the childhood place, school , meeting the girl , telling her about his love … Hero decided that now this time he will definitely meet her when he visits Nagpur…

But the big question was what to do with the dreams …

Why they come?
***

And it so happened that one day the younger daughter of our Hero find the name of this girl in search history of his phone …

I am now leaving it to your imagination what could have happened after that …

Papa you are stalking her? … (Our heroes daughters were also aware of his this story of childhood ‘crush’)

Somehow our Hero convinced his wife that there is nothing like that and he only want to see this girl who was studying with her just an excitement and nothing else…

Finally our Hero consulted our other common friend thinking that me too was a ‘highly sentimental’ like him, who told him to accept the reality and forget her ….

Boss I have tried my best … but when she comes in my dream I cannot tell you how my heart goes and the next many days I am lost in some different world altogether…

What say? Do you think our Hero will be able to get a chance to meet his ‘dreams girl’ at least once in this lifetime and get his wish fulfilled of seeing her after so many years …?

We do not know what is going to happen…

But for now we do have a song of the ‘dream girl’ from the world of cinema from those years …

Listen to the today’s song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and lip-synced on screen and performed by Hema Malini.
Also seen the in picturisation of this song are Manoj Kumar, Imtiaz Khan, David and many others.

Lyrics for the today’s song are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Blog Day :

5119 Post No. : 17068

Today 24th July 2022 is the eighty-fifth birth anniversary of actor, producer, director, writer, and lyricist Manoj Kumar.
He was born as Harikishan Giri Goswami on 24th July 1937 in Abbottabad (then in North-West frontier province of British India and now in Pakistan).

Manoj Kumar has been one of the many favorites of us, those who have grown up in the years of ‘seventies’, or people like me who were born in end-sixties and grow up in the ‘1970s’.

We get to watch many of his old movies including black and white movies (e.g., ‘Woh Kaun Thhi’ etc), and the current movies released during the period till eighties and then nineties. Since Manoj Kumar’s movies were having good music and songs they were liked very much. And apart from that his movies had his ‘special touch’ in those which he directed, or he acted. Manoj Kumar has his special place in the history of Hindi Films.

Apart from being an actor Manoj Kumar has been a Director, Producer, Writer, Editor, and Lyricist too.

Today on his birth anniversary I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Santosh-1989’ which is penned by him only. Out of the seven songs this movie has Manoj Kumar had written lyrics for one song in this movie. (Remaining six songs were written by Santosh Anand).

‘Santosh-1989’ was an ‘East-n-West Movies’ presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan.
Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie.

It had Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others.

Story of ‘Santosh-1989’ was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by V.V. Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik).

As mentioned above this movie had seven songs written by Santosh Anand (six songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song).
Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

The songs from this movie are good to listen and I have presented four songs from this movie earlier on the blog.

Following is the list of songs this movie had. Four of these seven songs have been posted on the blog earlier.

SNo Title of the Song Lyricist Singer/s Posted On the blog
01 Are logon tumhe kya hai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar 05.03.2022
02 Bataao tumhen pyaar kaise karoon Santosh Anand Nitin Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle 27.06.2022
03 Kahkahon ke liye Santosh Anand Mahendra Kapoor
4 Yoon lagne lagi aajkal zindagaani Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh 27.06.2018
05 Aaj main bechain hoon Santosh Anand Mahendra Kapoor, chorus 09.01.2022
06 Bansi waale ne gher lai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar
07 Tera allah beli Manoj Kumar Mahendra Kapoor, chorus

Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. Amjad Khan is lip-syncing the song in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and the picturization shows that this song is happening in the jail premises where all the jail inmates are performing and the police officers also watching their performance (which should be a part of extracurricular activities I guess 😊). In the backdrop of the performance there is a plan to help Manoj Kumar to run away from the jail custody which he succeeds (by the time the song ends) however the Police Inspector finally comes to know of this, and he shoots Amjad Khan.

Let us now enjoy this song written by Manoj Kumar.

Today on his birth anniversary we wish Manoj Kumar a ‘very happy birthday’ and a healthy and peaceful life ahead …

5092 Post No. : 17020

We are in the fag-end of the month of June of this year 2022. As I had mentioned earlier that this month is a special for many of us due to the many anniversaries falling in this month i.e., anniversaries of relatives, friends and as well as anniversaries of many artists too. Today we celebrate birth anniversary of our beloved music genius Rahul Dev Burman, and one post has already been posted on the blog remembering Pancham.

Today 27th June, 2022 is also the seventy-second birth anniversary of singer Nitin Mukesh (born on 27th June, 1950). We wish him a very happy birthday today and also wish him a healthy and peaceful life ahead.

On this occasion I am once again going back to the songs from the movie ‘Santosh’ (1989). There is one duet sung by Nitin Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle in this movie which is yet to be posted on the blog. This song is lying ready with us since long and I take this opportunity to present it today here on the blog.

‘Santosh’ was an East-n-West Movies presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan. Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie. It has Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pichoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others. Story of ‘Santosh’ is written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by VV Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik).

This movie has seven songs written by Santosh Anand (six songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song). Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. I have earlier mentioned the details of the songs of this movie in my previous posts, so I am not going to repeat them again here.

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Nitin Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle and on screen it is lip-synced by Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini. This song is a nice duet to watch and listen.

Let us enjoy this beautiful song now …

Bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon

Lyrics

ye aankhon se aankhon ka milna hai kya
bina bole hothon ka hilna hai kya
mujhe inka matlab to samjhaaiye
khayaalon mein phoolon ka khilna hai kya
na yun chup raho mujhko aawaz do
mujhe ghut ke marne ki aadat nahin
bataao tumhe ae …

bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
mujhe pyaar karne ki aadat nahin
main jaisa bhi hoon
haan
jaisa bhi hoon
saamne hoon khadaa aa
mujhe kuchh chhupaane ki aadat nahin
bataao tumhe pyaar kaise karoon
mujhe pyaar karne ki aadat nahin

ye aankhon se aankhon ka milna hai kya
ye aankhon se aankhon ka milna hai kya
bina bole hothon ka hilna hai kya
mujhe inka matlab to samjhaaiye
khayaalon mein phoolon ka khilna hai kya
na yun chup raho mujhko aawaz do
na yun chup raho mujhko aawaz do
mujhe ghut ke marne ki aadat nahin

mujhe itni fursat mili hai kahaan
mujhe itni fursat mili hai kahaan
jo padhta tumhaare nayan ki ghazal
mujhe aaj lagta hai sach maan lo
ye chehra nahin hai gulaabi kamal
ye dil kaise chori kiya jaayega
ye dil kaise chori kiya jaayega
mujhe dil churaane ki aadat nahin

mujhe kuchh huaa hai pataa hai tumhe
badi nam hawaa hai pataa hai tumhe
badan jal rahaa hai ragon mein magar

mujhe sar jhukaane ki aadat nahin

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # # A tribute to lyricist Verma Malik#
————————————

Today 15th March’2022 is the thirteenth Remembrance anniversary of lyricist Verma Malik (13 April 1925 – 15 March 2009).

As a tribute to him here is a song from the ‘1972’ movie ‘Be-imaan’. All songs for this movie were written by Verma Malik.

For today’s presentation I was looking for a song specially from the seventies and the year ‘1972’, as we are already celebrating ‘fifty’ years of the year ‘1972’.

‘Be-imaan’ had all the songs penned by Verma Malik and had also brought him his second ‘Filmfare’ award too.

Secondly, other than its songs the movie was also the most ‘controversial’ movie of that year because of the way it was adjusted the winner of best movie award at the filmfare awards function at the expense of other more desrving movies.

“Beimaan-1972” was directed by Sohan Lal Kanwar for his home productions ‘Filmnagar, Bombay’.

It had Manoj Kumar, Rakhi, Nazeema, Snehlata, Prem Chopra, Prem Nath, Pran, Murad, Sulochana, Raj Mehra, Brahm Bharadwaj, Gulshan Bawra, Rajpal, Sahbeena, Dulari, Sudarshan Sethi, Aarti, Vishal Dutt, O.P. Kohli, Tun Tun, V. Gopal, Rajrani, Sheikh, Ravi Thakur, Kamaldeep, Lata Bose, Kedar Sehgal, Deepak, Sikander Lamba, Parvez, Ayyub, Shankar, Ramesh, Khodu Baba, Mustafa, Uma, Neeta, and others.

(HFGK Vol-V (1971-981) mentions 05.06.1972 as the date of certification by Censor Board of this movie. However, the version of this movie available on internet mentions 28.11.1972 as the certification date by Censor Board.)

“Beimaan” had seven songs written by Vermal Malik and composed to music by Shankar-Jaikishan.
Following is the list of songs of this movie as given in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980).

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Na izzat ki chinta…jai bolo beimaan ki Mukesh, chorus 07.02.2013
02 Ye raakhi bandhan hai aisa Lata, Mukesh 24.08.2010
03 Neela neela kurta, chudidar pajama Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle, Chorus
04 Chali saj ke hai dil ko mila ke Sharda, Asha Bhonsle, chorus
05 Dekho ji raat ko zulam ho gaya Asha Bhonsle 23.09.2016
06 Bam ragad… ham do mast malang pilaayen bhar bhar thhande jaam Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor Being discussed today
07 Kitni kism ki beimaani… jai bolo beimaan ki Mukesh 07.02.2013

The title song of this movie ‘Jai bolo beimaan ki’ stood sixth in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list of 1972. Other than this the ‘raakhi’ song of the movie was also a very popular song.

I had a big nostalgia of the songs of this movie because one of my uncles had brought the Record Player and he had a LP record of this movie songs. When I started my own music collection, I had a big attraction for the songs of this movie and the other Manoj Kumar movie ‘Pehchaan-1970’. Audio cassettes were generally available for ‘Pehchaan-Beimaan’ songs in one cassette.

I think the songs of ‘Pehchaan-1970’ were also very popular and heard frequently on ‘Radio’ then. My Uncles used to remind me of the ‘ye gangaram ki samajh’ song every time during a family ‘get-together’. They said that they used to tease me with this song when I was a child and was ‘quite’ a healthy child 😊 (I don’t know why I used to be annoyed then on people calling me ‘Gangaram’ 😊)

Coming back to today’s song from ‘Beimaan-1972’, the picturisation shows Pran and Manoj Kumar lip-sync the song in the voices of Kishore Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor respectively.

The situation and context of the song is anybody’s guess.

Other than Manoj Kumar and Pran, the picturisation shows one actress whom I am unable to identif. Many other artists are visible in the picturisation of this song.

Let us now listen to today’s entertaining song and pay our tributes to lyricist Verma Malik.

This song also reminds me another song of Manoj Kumar-Pran ‘jodi’ in the similar situations in the movie ‘Dus Numberi’ and the song is ‘na tum ho yaar aalu naa ham hai yaar gobhi’ .

‘Santosh’ (1989) was an East-n-West Movies presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan. Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie. Story of ‘Santosh’ was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by VV Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik). Cinematography was done by Rajan Kinagi. The movie was passed by Censor board on 28.02.1989.

The star cast of the film includes Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others.

This movie has seven songs written by two lyricists. Santosh Anand wrote six songs and Manoj Kumar contributed one song. Following is the list of songs of this movie.

Sl. No. Song Title Lyricist Singer/s Posted On the blog
01 Are Logon Tumhe Kya Hai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar
02 Bataao Tumhen Pyaar Kaise Karoon Santosh Anand Nitin Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle
03 Kahkahon Ke Liye Santosh Anand Mahendra Kapoor
04 Yoon Lagne Lagi Aajkal Zindagaani Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh 27.06.2018
05 Aaj Main Bechain Hoon Santosh Anand Mahendra Kapoor, chorus 09.01.2022
06 Bansi Waale Ne Gher Lai Santosh Anand Lata Mangeshkar
07 Tera Allah Beli Manoj Kumar Mahendra Kapoor, chorus

So far as I remember this movie didn’t perform well at the box office then and even forgotten also. But this movie had some good songs, or in fact, all songs in this movie are good songs to listen. Music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Though I had not watched this movie then in 1989-90. I am not sure if it was released at all in theatres. I do not remember correctly now. I watched some part of it online in 2018. However, one song from this movie “Yoon Lagne Lagi Aajkal Zindagaani” was in my memory since long. And later one of my friends who also liked this song refreshed its memory. So, when I came into the contact with this blog, I shared this song and later represented it with a post here. Subsequently I listened to all the songs in this movie and liked them very much as they have a nice poetry content in them. I have all of them ready and noted with men since long. Another song from this movie “Aaj Main Bechain Hoon” was posted on the blog on 09.01.2022.

As mentioned above lyrics for as many as six songs in this movie were written by Santosh Anand. Today 5th March, 2022 is the birth anniversary of Santosh Anand (born on 5th March, 1940, some sources have mentioned the year of his birth wrongly as 1929 or 1939?).

Santosh Anand has written some of the memorable songs in Hindi Films. And he went on to receive appreciation as well as awards. However, in personal life destiny has not been so kind with him as he lost his son and daughter in law, and later due to bad economic condition he has to suffer a lot. Old age ailments and his deteriorating health condition have made his life difficult further. And that is how it happens with many around us, but life goes on …

Today I present the third song from this movie, which is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and on screen Rakhee is lip-syncing and performing his song. We can also see Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini, Prem Chopra, and others in the picturization of this song. From the picturization of the song we can guess that Manoj Kumar and Rakhee are working at a construction site. The picturization is typical for a Manoj Kumar movie where the characters are going through lot of emotions.

When I had first shared this song to Atul ji, I had mentioned the following

THIS IS FOR THE RAKHEE fans, because I think even, they have forgotten this movie or the movie itself is a forgotten movie,

(Because on AVA ji’s post on Rakhi’s birthday – “Jab Tum Ho Mere Humsafar Khoobsurat” none of the commentors mentioned about this movie)

The song is a typical ‘Manoj Kumar’ type movie song. After ‘ROTI KAPADA Aur MAKAAN’ he tried to recreate that magic in every movie but failed. (and still luckily got ‘TWO’ women loving him in every movie),

Let us now listen to the song which is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the tune is a catchy one and the music is quite enjoyable and so are the lyrics by Santosh Anand.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 10
———————————————————

73rd Republic Day of India

ek hai apni zameen
ek hai apna gagan
ek hai apna jahaan
ek hai apna watan
apne sabhi sukh ek hain
apne sabhi gham ek hain
aawaaz do
aawaaz do ham ek hain
ham ek hain

“What is it that I want? The same as you, the same as everyone else. I want to be physically safe and healthy, financially secure and personally happy. I want the same confidence in my abilities, in my environment and social acceptance. I have the same worries and aspirations for future. Same apprehensions if the children will turn out well and have good careers or not.”
This is me, in conversation with a dear friend and a long-time colleague. This conversation happened some 15-16 years ago. Actually, we were on the same page in the topic, she was not coming from any opposite direction at all. But she was the one clear on the causes of a problem, I was the one confused.
But things are a lot clearer to me now, exactly what I wanted to explain at that time is more obvious now.

apne sabhi sukh ek hain
apne sabhi gham ek hain

The causes of happiness for the common man are the same everywhere, whatever is the religion, caste, race, region, language, state or country they are allied to. The aspirations are same and the apprehension and causes of sadness are also the same essentially. This is the way a social environment develops, where people go and join hands with each other in times of happiness and sadness.

Today the country is celebrating 73rd Republic Day.

The constitution gives us the right to live with dignity. What is a person’s dignity? it is not just the pride in its citizenship, its values and its integrity. A person’s dignity is the self-belief that I have done nothing wrong and don’t mean any harm to anyone. And a feeling of security, that me, my life, my livelihood and my family is safe. A sense of belonging that makes us feel responsible for the safety and security of fellow citizens and has assurance of reciprocation. Also, that I deserve all that I command. Personally, socially and professionally.

As a citizen it is a right to demand and acquire good education, an adequate health facility, a great judicial system and better law enforcement agencies, plus a media which gives us information, that really mattered. Real information, on what has been done to give the above rights to the citizens.

With the slow and gradual increase of opportunities in education and personal growth, the inequalities have also increased. A success story in monetary terms and career, is just not enough. It is also important to have balanced and broad-minded success stories. Rationality and seeing an issue in a truly international perspective are what will make a successful person intellectually empowered.

At the ripe old age of 75, we should have been a mature people.
Do we see enough, do we care enough?
Do we bother to call out the misbehaviour, of miscreants we see on the streets? Are we bold to speak out against injustice?
Are we smart enough to sift through the crap fed to us day in and day out in the guise of news and entertainment?
Do we bother to check the authenticity of WhatsApp forwards before sharing with other people?
Do we even care that our ‘can’t care less’ attitude is destroying the centuries old social fabric of our society and stripping us of our identity as a people, the whole world, looked at with respect?

Munshi Premchand said “Communalism, whenever it raises its head, it comes within a cloak. Because it is ashamed of coming alone or walking alone. “
Yes, at the age of 75, we are a nation of most young people in the world. Being second largest population in the world, with an average age of 28 years, the figures of young people and children are just hugest in the world. If these young people are a part of work force and aspire for personal growth and are able to collectively individually, contribute to the nation building, what can be built and achieved is mind boggling.
But are we looking at what the young population of this country is aspiring to be?
What is the ambition of an average Indian youngster?
what are their hopes?
What are their priorities?

It is very important to channelise the energies and ambitions of youth towards personal and professional excellence. There is enough talent, brains and hands in this country to make it an economic force. But for that we have to rise above the politics of religion, caste, us and they, region etc.

There was a story of cats and a monkey, we used to hear and read as children. Lately I have not seen it repeated anywhere. So here is the story for refreshing the memory of readers:

Two cats are fighting for a roti. The monkey comes and tells them to stop fighting and make two equal pieces of the roti. The cats agree and make two parts. The monkey tells them the two parts are not equal, one is larger and the other is smaller. He advises the cat holding the larger piece, to break a small part and give it to him, so both the cats have equal portions. The result is again the same, the parts of the roti the cats have are still not equal. So, the other cat is asked to break a small piece and give it to the monkey, to establish the equality. So on and so forth the dispute continues, till the whole roti is finished, while the cats remain empty handed in the end.

Similar is the case of inequality in opportunities in our set up. In the name of equalising those opportunities, the opportunists among us are gobbling up the parts and parcel. Keeping the marginalised sections divided and fighting imaginary/perceptive fights with each other. It is not a true cut and dried, there are multiple layers to these differences, perceptions of not getting a fair share of the ‘roti’. The majority/minorities tussle is but one layer of it and the cloak which Munish Premchand referred to. The real divide here is still the have’s and have nots. Then there is a gender divide, which is inherent and keeps getting uglier.

Where does all this leave the common man, with its apprehensions and aspirations? With their same dukh and sukh, I spoke about in the first para.
“I have the same worries and aspirations for future. Same apprehensions if the children will turn out well and have good careers or not.”

It is true, that once I had children, all my self-interests and care less impulsiveness gave way to worries of the future. Not the least of which was the worry for their safety, physical, emotional and psychological. Major part of their time was spent outside the home, in school and in the creche. How the things that they imbibe from the social atmosphere will affect their character, their thought processes and their choices and priorities? This was a cause of worry for me.

Yes, these ills in society are stemming for this one vice, i. e. selfishness. A few days ago, I had a big discussion with my son, regarding the self-interest of sections of society, and the marginalised sections of the society, who are still outside a certain margin. This margin is not unbreachable. We can see it breached in some developed states in the country. In most parts of the country, the focus of the populace is on the personal growth, better life quality and the common interests of the common man.

My son, interestingly was coming from the other direction in the discussion. I have managed to make an inroad in the way, he looks at opportunities for himself and for others, his fellow countrymen, who have the talent, ability and deserve to take their rightful place in the progress and development of the country, I hope, because he has not come to me with any counter-arguments on the topic :-).

This is my quest to make a balanced, truly intellectual success story out of my children. There is no ‘ism’ in this thought process, just a bit of logic and unselfishness. The conscious unwillingness to get embroiled in a conflict of interests which is a matter of perception. This really is a distraction, which our youth do not need.

The problems and issues in our country are centric and specific to our country. These have to be looked at with a prism of our own, not look for solutions to it, from examples of other nations and other societies.

I will move on to the song post.

The song is an iconic song from the 1981 film “Kranti’. The punch line, or the concluding line of the song is

Mera chana hai apni marzi kaa
Marzi ka bhai marzi ka
Yeh dushman hai khudgarzi kaa
Khudgarzi ka khudgarzi kaa

“mera chana’ can be interpreted as ‘my passion’ or ‘my goal’, which really is to treat ‘khudgarzi’ i.e. selfishness as the enemy.

The song is iconic, as it has three legends of hindi film music singing it with the son of another legend. Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar are singing for Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini, whereas Nitin Mukesh is giving playback to Manoj Kumar in the song, which is written by Santosh Anand and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

I used to hear the ‘sponsored programme’ of this film on Vividh bharati, I have seen the movie also long back. But I only recalled that Rafi Sahab is singing just one line for Dilip Kumar in this song. But now that I have seen and heard the song multiple times, the lines Rafi sahab is singing towards the end of the song, are definitely very significant and elevate the whole song to another level. The composition and orchestration have been kept very simple and basic by Laxmikant-pyarelal, so this is not a crowded song, with all these greats singing their parts, independently and together, with male and female chorus to add to the group.

This is the only song of these four singers. For Rafi sahab’s series, this must be the last such song remaining to be posted in the blog where Rafi sahab and Kishore Kumar are singing together, with or without Lata Mangeshkar and Nitin Mukesh. For Rafi-Lata duets, there are a few songs, at least one of them I plan to include in the series. So, this post takes care of Rafi sahab’s association with Kishore kumar, Nitin Mukesh and Santosh Anand.

Let us go to the song, and listen to the rendition which is a real ‘hair raising’ experience.

Main laaya majedaar
Chana jor garam

Mere chane ki aankh sharaabi
Sharaabi ee

Ho oo
Iss ke dekho gaal gulaabi
Gulaabi ee

iss ka koyi nahin jawaabi

jaise koyi kudi punjaabi

kothhe chadh ke tainu pukaaraan
sun le mere balam
chana jor garam

Sar kafan baandh ke niklaa hai

Marzi ka bhai marzi ka
Mit jaane ko mit jaayegaa
Azaad watan kar jaayegaa

Dhamaake mein aawaaz bhi hai
Ek soz bhi hai ae

Blog Day :

4923 Post No. : 16757

Today 9th January’2022 is eighty-eighth birth anniversary of singer Mahendra Kapoor.

He was born on 9th January’1934 and passed away on 27th September’2008.

We remember him on this occasion and pay our tributes by listening to a song sung by him here on this blog. I am a big fan, if not a great fan, of Mahendra Kapoor songs.
These include patriotic songs and songs from other genres too.

After getting associated with this blog I have tried to bring many of his songs which so far are not posted on the blog.

Today’s song is one such song which I have noted long time back or almost nine years back.

This song is from the movie ‘Santosh-1989’.

One song from this movie has already been posted on the blog.

Cinematography was done by Radian Kinagi.

This movie had six songs. Lyrics for the songs of this movie were written by Santosh Anand (five songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song). Music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

It was passed by Censor board on 28.02.1989.

A brief about this movie has been taken from IMDB and reproduced here below.

Cold-hearted and manipulative Kamla has fallen in love with a poor man and marries him and has a child named Santosh. She soon realizes that life is not fun living in poverty, and abandons her child and husband, and returns back to her father and his wealth. She re-marries millionaire Kailashpathi, and has a child named Kundan from him. Years pass by, Kundan and Santosh have both grown up. Kundan is the owner of the mill with his mom, while Santosh is a struggling mill worker, and a union worker. A confrontation ensues between the mill and the workers, and Kamla is able to negotiate a settlement and get the workers back to work but fails to keep the promise. Santosh opposes this, and she sets her goons and Kundan against him. Santosh is abducted and held prisoner by Kamla and Kundan, and the only way he can be released is when he compromises with them.

Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor. It is lip-synced by Manoj Kumar. Also seen in the picturization of this song is Herma Malini.

Lyrics are by Santosh Anand and music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Listening to today’s song may remind some, the well song ‘aur nahin bas aur nahin, gham ke pyaale aur nahin’ from ‘Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan-1974’. I like this song and today’ song very much.

Let us now listen to today’s song which is written by Santosh Anand and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Enjoy!!!
