Aawaaraa hoon

Posted on: May 2, 2009

Though Raj Kapoor’s career was launched with “Andaaz” and “Barsaat”,”Aawaara” was the movie that firmly established his image by which he is known even today.

It is obvious that this image of Raj Kapoor in “Aawaara” is clearly influenced by Charlie Chaplin. I wonder if he was criticised during those days for apeing the Hollywood comedian. What is known is that the public simply lapped it up. Not only India, this movie became a big rage in many other countries, especially Soviet Union and other Eastern European and Asian nations.

This title song “Aawaara hoon” was on everyone’s lips. It was the first “introduction” song in a Bollywood movie. In future Raj Kapoor movies, there would be similar introduction songs.

This song, an out and out iconic song, was written by Shailendra and music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. This song firmly established Mukesh as the voice of Raj Kapoor.

It is an immortal song. Here is this song, enjoy !

Song-Aawaara hoon (Aawaara) (1951) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

aawaaraa hoon, aawaaraa hoon
yaa gardish mein hoon aasmaan kaa taaraa hoon
aawaaraa hoon, aawaaraa hoon
yaa gardish mein hoon aasmaan kaa taaraa hoon
aawaara hoon

gharbaar nahin, sansaar nahin
mujhse kisiko pyaar nahin
mujhse kisiko pyaar nahin
uspaar kisi se milne kaa iqraar nahin
mujhse kisiko pyaar nahin
mujhse kisiko pyaar nahin
sunsaan nagar anjaan dagar kaa pyaaraa hoon
aawaaraa hoon, aawaaraa hoon
yaa gardish mein hoon aasmaan kaa taaraa hoon
aawaara hoon

aabaad nahin barbaad sahi
gaataa hoon khushi ke geet magar
gaataa hoon khushi ke geet magar
zakhmon se bharaa seenaa hai meraa
hansti hai magar ye mast nazar
duniyaa aaa
duniyaa mein tere teer kaa yaa taqdeer kaa maaraa hoon
aawaaraa hoon, aawaaraa hoon
yaa gardish mein hoon aasmaan kaa taaraa hoon
aawaaraa hoon, aawaaraa hoon
aawaaraa hoon

Atulji,

Two corrections a must in this post.

Bollywood to be replaced by Hollywood in the 3rd line of 2nd para.

Secondly and more importantly, Shailendra and not Hasrat Jaipuri should be attributed for the lyrics as pointed out above by Mr. Rajeev.

Kindly correct as its an extremely important song.
