Dekho mausam kya bahaar aayi

Perceptions about singers, lyricists and music directors can often be so misleading. For example, if Mukesh and Lata sing a duet written by Majrooh and composed by Chitragupta, then what does one expect ? A mythological song ? Or perhaps a sad song ? Or a song based on rural characters ?
Here is a song created by the above team of artists. It is from a 1961 movie called “Opera House”. If one listens to this song, one cannot but help feel line standing up and doing a jig. The song certainly sounds like a dance song.
There are more surprises in store if one watches the picturisation. The song is picturised not on (say) Raj Kapoor and Vyjyantimala, but on Ajit and B Saroja Devi. Yes, Ajit is the hero of this movie and Vyjyanti Mala after her success as a dancing heroine in several Bollywood movies, had made it fashionable to have south Indian dancing actresses as heroines. Actresses like B Saroja Devi, Padmini ,Jamuna etc certainly benefitted from this trend.
It is a song that I have heard for the first time and I feel that it is a gem of a song. And a rare ge too, considering that not too many people may have heard this song.

Lyrics
dekho mausam
kyaa bahaar hai
saaraa aalam
beqaraar hai
aise mein kyun ham
deewaane ho jaayen naa
dekho mausam
kyaa bahaar hai
saaraa aalam
beqaraar hai
aise mein kyun ham
deewaane ho jaayen naa
chhalki-chhalki
chaandni bhi hai
halki-halki
bekhudi bhi hai
aise mein kyun ham
yahin par kho jaayen naa
thandi thandi ret me jalwon ki barsaat hai
kya mastaana hai samaan kyaa matwaali raat hai
thandi thandi ret me jalwon ki barsaat hai
kya mastaana hai samaan kyaa matwaali raat hai
ho ho sapne bikhre mod mod pe aake naina jod jod ke
aise mein kyun ham
deewaane ho jaayen naa
chhalki-chhalki
chaandni bhi hai
halki-halki
bekhudi bhi hai
aise mein kyun ham
yahin par kho jaayen naa
gaati si har saans mein bajti si shahnaayiyaan
saayaa dil pe daalti taaron ki parchhaayiyaan
gaati si har saans mein bajti si shahnaayiyaan
saayaa dil pe daalti taaron ki parchhaayiyaan
ho o
jhaanke chandaa
aasmaan se
chhede hamko
jaan-jaan ke
aise mein kyun ham
yahin par kho jaayen na
dekho mausam
kyaa bahaar hai
saaraa aalam
beqaraar hai
aise mein kyun ham
deewaane ho jaayen naa
dariyaa ki har mauj mein armaanon kaa zor hai
dilwaalon ke geet kaa halkaa-halkaa shor hai
dariyaa ki har mauj mein armaanon kaa zor hai
dilwaalon ke geet kaa halkaa-halkaa shor hai
ho ho o o
lahren dolen
jhoom-jhoom ke
saahil kaa munh
choom-choom ke
aise me kyun ham
deewaane ho jaayen naa
dekho mausam
kyaa bahaar hai
saaraa aalam
beqaraar hai
aise mein kyun ham
deewaane ho jaayen naa

Naturally this song is not from my ‘memories’ type of song, but this I got introduced to when I started collecting cassettes and had fallen in love with HFM.
This is one of the Mukesh songs that I like to listen any time.

I have heard this song quite a few times. It used to come on Vividh Bharati. Nice, pleasant song.
