#the Decade of Fifties –1951 – 1960 #
——————————————————————

In this post we cover a song sung by Hemant Kumar from the movie ‘Kitnaa Badal Gayaa Insaan-1957’.

Two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog in the past.

As mentioned by Shri Atul ji in his post while launching this movie on the blog, the title of this movie seems to be inspired from the iconic song ‘dekh tere sansaar ki haalat’ from ‘Naastik-1954’. And the same leading pair of ‘Naastik-1954’ Nalini Jaywant and Ajit was cast in this movie ‘Kitnaa Badal Gayaa Insaan’ again. Both the movies were directed by I.S. Johar.

‘Kitnaa Badal Gayaa Insaan-1957’ was a ‘costume drama movie’ directed by I.S. Johar for ‘Modern Theatre Ltd, Madras’.

It had Nalini Jaywant, Ajit, I.S. Johar, Kamaljeet, Thakkar, Anil Dutt, Harbanslal, Khopkar, Gopal, Lakshami Narayan, Reeta, Rajamani, Saroja, P. Bala, Shanti, G. Bala, Udaylakshami and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.09.1957.

‘Kitnaa Badal Gayaa Insaan-1957’ has eleven songs written by S.H. Bihari and the music for this movie was composed by Hemant Kumar.

Hemant Kumar, Ghulam Mohammad, Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt, Mohd Rafi, Shamshad Begam, and Bande Hasan are the singers whose voices appear in the songs of this movie.

Going by the list of songs of this movie I don’t think I am familiar with any of the songs of this movie. As mentioned above two songs from this movie have been posted earlier on the blog.

Today’s song is sung by Hemant Kumar and luckily video of this song is also available where we can see Ajit racing a ‘tonga’ (not exactly a traditional tong, as the carriage is of different type like used in a ‘jugaad’). We can also see ‘boatmen’ ferrying the boat (must be in Kerala) and then suddenly we are taken back into the lakes of ‘Kashmir’ (I guess). 🙂

So, let us now enjoy this song where this guy is out to ‘sell his heart’ not for money but only to ‘someone who is ‘dilwaala’ and having a ‘flower like face’:) (translation?)

“saudaa hai kitnaa pyaaraa
samjho mera ishaara
aisi ghadi suhaani
aati nahin dobaaraa”

Hullo Atuldom

This post is thanks to the morning programs aired by Radio Ceylon (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) and Prasar Bharati’s Vividh Bharati today.

The first song that I heard this morning was from the 1967 Bharat Bhushan starrer “Taqdeer”; a song from “Gateway Of India” (1957) was just over. And Jyoti Parmarji announced that the segment was a tribute to yesteryear actor Bharat Bhushan (14th June 1920- 27th January 1992).

The next segment played songs from “Thokar” (1953), Taxi 555 (1958), “Saaranga” (1960) etc; and Jyotiji said that the segment was remembering Sardar Malik (13th January 1930- 27th January 2006).

I am sure if I had listened further, I would have heard some lovely songs of Zia Sarhadi Sahab (1917- 27th January 1997). This youtube link will give us the songs played in that segment.

Then around 9.30 a.m. I switched on to Vividh Bharati and I landed on their “aaj ke fankaar” and I discovered that today is LOIN’s birth anniversary too.

So many yesteryear populars’ anniversaries. So I set out on my favourite activity- trying to find a movie or song featuring at least two of those who are being remebered today. And I had my EUREKAAA!!!! moment sometime back.

Today we are having a song sung by Mohd. Rafi, written by Madan Mohan (not the music director, please note) & Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and composed by Sardar Malik. It is from the movie “Maa Ke Aansoo” (1959). It was a movie which had Hamid Ali Khan, Nalini Jaywant, Neelam, Lalita Pawar, Agha, Ajit Kumar etc. Dhirubhai Desai was the director and more details about the movie can be had in this post Meri jholi ko bhar de of December 27th, 2011. Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji has given a brief about the movie in the comments to the post.

I am sure that it is well-known that Hamid Ali Khan was popular as Ajit. He started as an extra in many of his initial films to feed himself. He changed his name to Ajit on the advise of Nanabhai Bhatt. and played the main protagonist in films till sometime in the 60s when he switched to playing character roles and was most sought after villain in movies of the late 60s and most of the 70s. His character in “Kalicharan” (1976) pompously called himself “LOIN” of course that was his way of pronouncing the word Lion; similarly his “Rabbert” for Robert, “Mona Darling” are all unforgettable.
He would have been 101 today.

Sardar Malik passed away this date in 2006. He was active in Hindi Films from late 1940s and gave music for nearly 600 songs. I could readily recollect all the songs that SLBC played this morning. I just thought I will mention here that his children and grand children are connected with the music industry as singers, music directors etc. I also feel like mentioning that Hasrat Jaipuri was his wife’s brother.

Song-Hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan (Maa Ke Aansoo)(1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Madan Mohan (lyricist), MD-Sardar Malik

Lyrics

aandhi mein gunaahon ka diya jal nahin sakta
jo bachke aa pahuncha hai
anjaam tera tere hi haathon mein hai naadaan

Allaah ka ye ghar to shaheedon ke liye hai
hai waqt sambhalne ka
sambhal jaa arre naadaaan

hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan
khud ko zara pehchaan
tu khud ko zara pehchaan

kya teri duaaon se falak hil nahin sakta
falak hil nahin sakta
is dar se jo tu chaahe to kya mil nahin sakta
to kya mil nahin sakta
thhak jaayega neki se buraayi ka ye toofaan
buraayi ka ye toofaan
hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan
khud ko zara pehchaan
tu khud ko zara pehchaan
hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan
khud ko zara pehchaan
tu khud ko zara pehchaan

Today’s song is from the film Milan-1958.

Films having titles as Milan were made in 1946, 1958, 1967, and 1994. Then there was Milan ki Aag-1991, Milan ki Pyaas-1989, Milan ki Raat-1967 and Milan Talkies-2019. Even during the Silent era 2 such films were made, one in 1924 and the other in 1929. Milan-1946 had a historical value as it was made in Hindi and Bangla and was based on Tagore’s novel ” Noukadubi”. This was a Debut film for 2 Heroines, namely Meera Mishra and Ranjana- both opposite Dilip Kumar. The more famous film was Milan-1967, starring Sunil Dutt and Nutan and it was a remake of a hit Telugu film ” Mooga Manasulu”-1963. Its song ‘ Saawan ka mahina’ by Mukesh and Lata was very famous. It had a ‘rebirth’ story.

Film Milan-1958 was not actually based on a Rebirth story, but its story was about a loving couple separated and joined together after some years. The Indian audience loves such stories. That is why films having ‘ Happy Ending ‘ are made 100 times more than ‘ Sad Ending ‘ films ! When Saigal featured in the film ” Devdas’ in 1935, in which he died at the end, there was a wave of films in which the hero dies at the end. Dilip Kumar was a victim of such 8 consecutive films. Though his initial fame came with these films, it also stamped him as ” Tragedy King” and he had to consult a Psychiatrist and as per advice he shifted to Comedy films !

Film Milan-58 was directed by Kedar Kapoor. Kedar Kapoor was born on 2-9-1927. Not much information is available about him. Kedar joined the film line in 1945 and did a small role in the film Bhakta Prahlad-46. Working as an assistant to many directors, he started his career by directing the film Lal Pari-1954. In all he directed 35 Hindi films, mostly B and C grade. He specialised in Dara singh films. He directed 8 films of Dara Singh in the 60s. Some of his films were, Miss Cocacola-55, Changez khan-57, Senapati-57, Dara singh-64, Patanga-71 etc etc. His last film was Bekhabar-83. Kedar kapoor died on 5-6-1987.

The film was made by N.C.Films, a family concern and it was produced by Gulshan Behl-his brother. My sincere opinion is that there were only 2 MDs who were real melody makers. They were Hansraj Behl and Chitragupt. In every film atleast 50% songs used to be very melodious. Unfortunately, both of them never ranked in the “A” grade or within the first 5 to 10 MDs. This was because, barring some exceptions, they were never attached to any famous or well known film houses. That is how the film industry worked !

Hansraj Behl and his brother, Gulshan Behl founded N.C.Films, on their father’s name-Nihal Chand- and produced B and C grade movies to which Hansraj gave his music. Hansraj was known as Master ji, in the industry. Only two people were known as Master ji…one was Ghulam Haider and the other was Hansraj Behl. Hansraj usually worked alone and rarely used any assistant while giving music.

Hansraj is remembered for giving initial playback singing breaks to Asha Bhonsle and Madhubala Jhaveri. He also gave a chance to his own friend Verma Malik-Lyricist. Malik used to live with him initially, in Bombay. He composed music for 62 films from Pujari-46 to Badmashon ka Badmash-79. One film “Insaaf ka Khoon” was released after his death,in 1988.

Hansraj Behl is one of the music directors who became successful in the post independence era. He composed music for not only Hindi films but also for Punjabi films. Hansraj was born on 26th November 1916 in Punjab. He got his basic education in music from Pt. Chunnilal. Then he opened his music school in Lahore and he had some non-film records released under the label of HMV. In 1944 Hansraj came to Bombay to try his luck in the Hindi film industry as a music director.

After one year of struggle he got his first film Pujari, made by Ardeshir Irani, in 1946. He got films like Gwaalan and Phulwari in the same year, but all these films could not do well at the box office. Behl tasted success in 1947 with the release of Lakhon Mein Ek and Chheen Le Azadi. ‘Moti Chugne Gayi Re Hansi..’ sung by Shamshad Begum and Mukesh from the film Chheen Le Azadi became very popular. In 1948 he came up with four films – Chunariya, Mitti Ke Khilone, Pardesi Mehmaan and Satya Narayan, of which Chunariya’s music was a hit especially the song ‘Dil-e-Nashaad Ko Jeene Ki Hasrat Ho Gayi..’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song which placed him among high class music directors was ‘Sab Kuchh Lutaya Hamne Aakar Teri Gali Me..’ sung by Mohammed Rafi and written by Mulk Raj Bhaakri.

In the year 1949, he came out with Chakori, Raat Ki Raani, Zevraat and few more films. Lata sang one of her favourite songs, ‘Haye Chanda Gaye Pardes Chakori Yahan Ro Ro Mare..’ in Chakori, which became very popular and it helped Hansraj to gain popularity among music lovers. ‘Jin Raaton Mein Neend Ud Jaati Hai..’ sung by Mohammed Rafi in Raat Ki Raani was a nationwide hit.

In 1950-51 he gave many hit songs with Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt and Suraiyya. Songs of Kisi Ki Yaad became very popular soon after the release of the film. ‘Koi Mujhko Na Bulaye..’ and ‘Tadapta Chhod Kar Mujhko Kahaan Tum Reh Gaye..’ both sung by Geeta Dutt and ‘O Jaane Wale Ye Kya Kiya..’ by Mohammed Rafi gained immense popularity. In 1952 he introduced Madhubala Jhaveri as a playback singer in Apni Izzat and Jaggu. Madhubala sang ‘Dil Mere Tera Diwaana..’ with Talat Mehmood and ‘Meethi Meethi Loriyaan Main Dheere Dheere Gaoon..’ (both Apni Izzat) featured her solo voice. In 1954, he again came out with musical films like Dost and Khaiber. ‘Aaye Bhi Akela Jaye Bhi Akela..’ from Dost (1954) sung by Talat Mehmood was among one of his memorable compositions.

He continued to give his best in films like Rajdhani, Milan, Miss Bombay, Changez Khan and Saawan. Songs like ‘Bhool Ja Sapne Suhane..’ from Rajdhani (1956), ‘Mohabbat Zinda rehti Hai..’ from Changez Khan (1957), ‘ Jab Raat Nahi Katti..’ from Changez Khan (1957), ‘Zindagi Bhar Gham Judaai Ka..’ from Miss Bombay (1957), ‘Haseen Ho Khuda To Nahi..’ from Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh (1960), ‘Bheega Bheega Pyar Ka Sama..’ from Saawan (1959) and ‘Tujhko Dhundu To Dhoondu Kahan..’ from Milan (1959) crossed all the barriers of success and Hansraj Behl’s name was on the lips of every music lover.

After all these successful films he continued to give music till 1969 but failed to give any hit because his later films were either stunts or fantasy films with little scope for having good music. His last hit song was an all time great creation ‘Jahan Daal Daal Pe Sone Ki Chidiya Karti Hai Basera..’ which was sung by Mohammed Rafi for the film Sikandar-e-Aazam in 1965.

Hansraj Behl died of Cancer in Bombay on 20-5-1984.

The cast of the film Milan-1958 was Nalini jaywant, Ajit, Nishi, Helen, Tiwari, Tun Tun, Narmada Shankar etc. Nalini Jaywant worked with Ajit in 10 films and with Ashok Kumar in 11 films. In this matter Nirupa Roy beats all Heroines. She worked with balraj sahani in 12 films, With Jairaj in 16 films, with Trilok Kapoor in 18 films and ….hold your breath, with Ashok Kumar, she worked in 21 Films ! (By the way she acted as Amitabh’s mother in 12 films too !).

The story of the film was….

Ajit and Nalini love each other and get married. They also have one son. While the son is growing up, they have serious differences and they separate from each other. Nalini , with her son, shifts to another town and works as a Nurse in a Hospital. Ajit gets involved with another girl-Nishi. After a few months, Nishi cheats Ajit and leaves him. Ajit gets disgusted with his life and leaves the town. By coincidence he too lands in the same town where Nalini and his son are living. They do not know about each other’s existence in the same town. One day, Ajit meets with an accident and is brought to the same hospital where Nalini is serving. She is shocked to see Ajit. She looks after him with care and as soon as he is well enough to be discharged, Nalini resigns from the hospital and packs her luggage to shift to another town- to be away from Ajit. Ajit enquires at the hospital about her address and goes to her house. Ajit begs her pardon and pleads her to be with him again. Both weep a lot together and then accept each other happily !

Today’s song is a duet by Rafi and Shamshad Begum, who have sung some of the best duets in Hindi films. Together, they sang 160 duets in their career. I am sure, more than 50 % will account for my favourites. Let us enjoy this duet now….

Today 8th March, 2022 is the 101st birth anniversary of poet-lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi (08.03.1921 – 25.10.1980).

As per statistics available he has written around 717 to 730 songs in Hindi Films. On our blog we have so far covered 704 songs penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. Around six to eight songs from the remaining songs seems to be difficult to find or they may not be available at all. Following is the details of movies and the number of songs from these movies yet to be posted on the blog.

Today I present here a song from the movie ‘Nanha Farishta’ (1969). ‘Nanha Farishta’ was directed by T Prakash Rao for Vijaya International, Madras. It was produced by B Nagi Reddi and Chakrapani. This movie was presented by B Nagi Reddi.

The star cast of the movie lists Pran, Ajit, Anwar Hussain, Padmini, Balraj Sahni and Baby Rani, supported by Suresh, Mukri, Raj Mehra, Sundar, Maruti, Prem Kumar and Johnny Walker.

Story of this movie was written by Thuraiyoor K Moorthy, and dialogues were written by Inder Raj Anand. Editing of this movie was done by BS Glaad.

This movie had four songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi and music composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

The playback singers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor and Manhar. [Author’s Note: The titles of the movie also mentioned the name of S Balbir in the list of playback singers, however HFGK has not mentioned Balbir’s name for any song of this movie.]

HFGK mentions the following four songs from this movie.

Song  Posted On
O Natkhat Nanhi Laadli Tujhe Dekhen  26.12.2020
Chandaa Kaahe Ka Tera Maama  08.03.2021
O Re O, Sharaabi Tujhme Ek Kharaabi  Being discussed today
 Bachche Mein Hai Bhagwaan  14.11.2014

Kalyanji-Anandji have worked with Sahir Ludhianvi in two movies, as per following details.

Movie Year MD Songs by Sahir
(in blog)
Songs by Sahir
(per HFGK)
Songs by Sahir (per – The People’s Poet)
Nanha Farishta 1969 Kalyanji-Anandji 3 4 4
Shankar Shambhu 1976 Kalyanji-Anandji 5 5 5

From the above table we can see that only one song from the movide ‘Nanha Farishta’ which is also the last song of ‘Sahir – KA’ association remains to be posted on the blog. This is also the final song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and on-screen Padmini is lip-syncing for Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Also seen in the picturization of the song are Pran, Ajit, and Anwar Hussain.

The song happens when the three criminals Pran, Ajit and Anwar Hussain got drunk and request Gauri (Padmini) to sing a song for them. Gauri is the caretaker of the little girl Baby (Baby Rani) whom the three have abducted after killing her father. Later the three criminals develop a soft corner for the baby girl and kidnapped her caretaker Gauri as well when the little girl fall sick.

Gauri has a plan for the criminals and that is why she readily agrees to sing and dance for the drunken criminals. But that is not to be disclosed here and that is something we have to leave intact for those who are interested in watching this movie. I have also not watched this movie and the above storyline in short is from what I got to read on internet.

With this post, the film ‘Nanha Farishta’ (1969) now joins the list of Yippeee’d movies on the blog.

Let us listen to the today’s song now.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 4
———————————–————––——————————————–————
Chaudhvin ka chaand ho
Ya aaftaab ho….
Jo bhi ho tum khudaa ki qasam
Lajawaab ho…oo….ooo

This time it is the turn of Music director who is known as the creator of iconic songs, popularly known as Ravi. His association with Rafi sahab begins in 1956-57 with the first film “Ek Saal” with 2 solo songs written by Prem Dhawan. Many of these iconic songs composed by Ravi were sung by Rafi sahab in this long association which ended only with the demise of Rafi Sahab in 1980. I counted 251 songs composed by Ravi in the excel sheet of Rafi sahab songs. Around 200 of these songs are upto late 60’s. In the 70’s Rafi sahab’s output has as it is decreased so it is not surprising that the 70’s decade there are less than 50 songs by the team of Mohammed Rafi-Ravi, with various lyricists.

Starting from 1957, there are around 50 songs upto 1960. So the 60’s decade is the most productive one with around 150 songs. This, despite Ravi being at the peak of his career working extensively with the B.R. Chopra camp. There are clear indications that Ravi preferred to have Rafi sahab sing his songs whenever he was working outside the BR camp, when he had Mahendra Kapoor sing most of his songs.

The very summit of this association is the legendary solo of Chaudhvin ka chaand(1960). The film has 5 Rafi solo numbers, all of them popular songs, all the places that I saw. But the excel sheet is listing one additional song with the words “yehan ke dost ba-wafa”, so there is a possibility of a small snippet of rendition of some poetry maybe lying hidden in the movie. The story really does take off from here with 7 songs in ‘Tu nahin aur Sahi’ (1960). Then comes the sonorous Husn waale tera jawaab nahin in Gharana (1961). With 6 songs in “China Town” 1962, Rafi has become the only male singer for Ravi in all ‘AA’ and ‘AB’ grade movies which had ‘AAA’ grade music. Rafi sahab went on to croon these outstanding solos/duet for Sunil Dutt in the film “Aaj aur kal” (1963) composed by Ravi:

mujhe gale se lagaa lo bahut udaas hoon main
Ye aadiyaan ye fizaayen bulaa rahi hain tumhen
itni haseen itni jaaan raat kya karen

In 1963 Ravi had Rafi sahab sing 5 songs each in Bharosa, Pyar ka Bandhan and Grihasti, on Mehmood, Guru Dutt, Raj Kumar Johnny Walker and Manoj Kumar. It is most likely that there were no other male playback singers in the credits of these movies too. This is apart from the 7 songs including 4 solos in ‘Pyar Kiya to Darna kya” for Aagha and Shammi Kapoor. 1963 also saw the song Sau baar janam lenge in the film “Ustadon ke Ustaad”.

Here is a list of 4 of the popular and unique, of the 7 Rafi songs in the film “Door ki Aawaaz”:

Song Singers
Ham bhi agar bachche hote Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle
Husn se chaand bhi sharmaayaa hai Mohd Rafi
Kyaa yoonhi rooth ke jaane ko muhabbat ki thhi Mohd Rafi
Muqaddar aazmaanaa chaahtaa hoon Mohd Rafi

Shakeel Badayuni seems to have formed a newer equation with Ravi post “Chaudhvi ka Chaand” going by the no. of films I am finding in the Rafi list where they worked together.

Rafi-Ravi combination moved on to Shehnai in 1964 with 4 solos and 1 duet, in a Rafi-Asha score, with one melodious solo for Asha Is tarah todaa mera dil .

“Khandaan” 1965 again was again an all-Rafi score with 6 songs, 7th being the iconic Lata solo Tumhi mere mandir tumhi meri poojaa tumhi devtaa ho .

I simply must list the iconic solos by Rafi sahab in Do Badan(1966):

Song Singers
Bhari duniyaa mein aakhir dil ko samjhaane kahaan jaayen Mohd Rafi
Is Jahan Se (Verse) Mohd Rafi
Naseeb mein jiske jo likhaa thaa Mohd Rafi
Rahaa gardishon mein hardam Mohd Rafi

There is a bonus in this film also with additional verse “is jahan se’, we can look forward to finding and enjoying.

In 1967, there were ‘Meherbaan’ and “Nai Roshni” followed with “Do Kaliyan” and ‘Neel Kamal’ in 1968. Do I really need to list the songs of ‘Neel Kamal”? I dont think so. “Neel Kamal” atleast had a Manna Dey song on Mehmood Khaali dabba khaali bottle lele mere yaar .

This is 1969 and Ek phool do mali:

Song Singers
Aulaad waalon phoolo phalo Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle
Chal chal re naujawaan-parody song Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle
O nanhe se farishte Mohd Rafi
Ye parda hata do Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle

They reach early 70’s to create these two meaningful songs:

Song Movie (year) Singers MD Lyricist
Mujhe ishq hai tujhi se meri jaan e zindagaani Ummeed(1971) Mohd Rafi Ravi Shakeel Badayuni
Mere Dost Tujhe Tera Meet Mubarak Dhadkan(1972) Mohd Rafi Ravi Ravi & Ali

We must go back to the early years of Rafi-Ravi association to reach “Mehendi’ 1958. This is a recital by Rafi sahab of a poetry titled ‘Baazaar-e-husn’ by Kaamil Rashid. Ajit is reciting this nazm in the movie on a Kotha, presumably of Umrao Jaan. This movie Mahendi 1958 was based on a novel “Umrao Jaan Ada” (1904) authored by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. The other two movies named “Umrao Jaan’ were based on the same novel. This is an affirmation of the feeling I had, that it must be based on a novel, while watching ‘Umrao Jaan’ 1981.

This recital is another great rendition, without music, reminding me of the rendition of Unhen qissa e gham jo likhne ko baithhe in ‘Naya Qanoon’(1965) and Kya gham jo andheri hain raaten in ‘Barsaat ki raat’ (1960).

In the movie, this recital happens, then the reply by ‘Umrao Jaan’ in Lata Mangehskar’s voice is posted here bhari mehfil hai ye afsaana nahin. The recital on screen is by an actor named Jayshree, whose identity is not clear. I have seen the posted songs of the film to find if this is the veteran Marathi film actress Jayshree Gadkar. The film’s poster by SaReGaMa has Jayshree Gadkar on it. She has been seen in a few hindi films in later years like “Bahaaron ke Sapne’1967. But there is a question mark if it is the same actor in Mehendi(1958). The cast of the film is Jayashree, Ajit, Veena, Kumar, Baalam, Mirza Musharraf, Lalita Pawar, Baby Devika, Adib, Ismail, Prakash, Jago, Maqbool, Krishnakant, Munshi Munakka, Hamid – I, Dinanath, Anwari Bai, Qaisarbai, & Mumtaz Begum.

These four songs of the film are posted in the blog:

Song Date of posting
Apne kiye pe koyi pashemaan ho gayaa 21 december 2009
Bedard zamaana tera dushman hai 26 december 2009
Pyaar ki duniya lutegi hamen maaloom na thhaa 11 may 2012
Bhari mehfil hai ye afsaana nahin 22 may 2012

I had come accross long-time back and all these years I was under the impression that there is this song by Rafi, a recital filmed on Ajit, and it is already posted. Then last month I found this song and saved the link for having it in this series, as it was not posted. For last two weeks, I have not worked on any posts, but it was there on the back of the mind, that some of these wonderful songs are saved in my drafts and I need to get on with it. Finally, yesterday I opened the laptop, with this very song on the mind, and lo, there it was in one of the comments that the recital is not posted.
The question/grievance/complaint is here now, the answer to it was here already.
Editor’s note:-This song is the 500th song from movies of 1958 to appear in the blog.

This Week, That Year – 2
———————————–
06Sep – 12Sep, 2010
————————————————-
Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 77
————————————————–

If nothing else, then this week 10 years ago has to be characterized as the ‘Anmol Ghadi’ week. I am sure it was by design that every day of this week (actually six days of this week, barring the last day), the first song posted every morning is a song from the 1946 film ‘Anmol Ghadi’. This film has 12 songs listed in the Geet Kosh. As we entered this week ten years ago, five of these were already posted on the blog. That left seven. I am sure Atul ji took it upon himself to get the ‘Yippeee’ status for this film in a quick order, by posting one each of the remaining seven songs on each day of the week. And be done with it.

Well almost. Starting from 6th September in 2010, all the way through 11th September, Atul ji held true to his promise and posted the first song on these six days, that belonged to this iconic film. It almost sounds as if the ‘Atul-Song-a-Day’ blog was transformed into ‘Anmol-Ghadi-Song-a-Day’ for this week.

But then, we arrive at 12th September, the last song of this film which would have brought fame and recognition – well, it could not be posted. We have six posts on the day, but no ‘Anmol Ghadi’. I am keen to know from Atul ji, what happened that made him miss this target.

I had actually scanned through the posts for ‘Anmol Ghadi’ songs for that week. And I came to realize one thing. You see, the concept Yippeee had not yet been invented on this blog. And Atul ji was just going after this film, because of its music. As I checked the complete set of songs of this film on the blog, I find that the continuous posting thing had actually started on 4th September. On that day, Atul ji has simply written that this film has 12 songs, that three are already posted and that the film has wonderful music, so let us just bring it on board quickly. That was the simple thought behind continuously posting a song from this film, as the first song of the day, from 4th to 11th Sept. then the 12th date is missed. And the final song of the film gets duly posted on 13th.

And so, my eager anticipation awaits a response from Atul ji. “Why 12th was missed.’’

Here is the chart of posts for the week, ten years ago.

The numbers for the week -,

The posting continued at the then current brisk rate. The week saw a total of 43 songs posted, with the  daily rate being six songs per day, with one of the days showing up with seven. The 43 songs came from 37 films – six of them from ‘Anmol Ghadi’ and another two from the film ‘Milan’ of 1967. The remaining 35 songs are one each from 35 films.

The week witnessed as many as 13 debuts. Thirteen films made their appearance for the first time on the blog. No films got yippeee’d, with ‘Anmol Ghadi’ being the close call of almost there. Of the total 37 films featured that week, 29 have been yippeee’d during the interim decade, whereas 8 films are still awaiting completion of their songs on the blog.

The physical post numbers stretched from 2914 to 2956. So actually a blog century – the 29th, has happened in the previous week.

The guest post activity was fairly low in those times. Of the 43 posts, Atul ji accounts for 38, and only five posts came from the contributing team. Three of these posts are from Raja ji, one from Santosh Ojha ji, and one very interesting post on Shammi Kapoor from – yes, you guessed it – Greta Memsaab. A very interesting and informative post that identifies many of the side players in this group dance song – “Dekho Ab To, Kisko Nahin Hai Khabar” from the film ‘Janwar’ of 1965,

This post, having been delayed quite a bit, comes on the last day of the week under analysis. On this day, there is one film still pending for Yippeee status. The film is ‘Patanga’ from 1971. Two songs of this film are remaining to be posted. With this post we bring one of them on to the blog. Which means that this film is now just one song away from being inducted into the Yippeee hall of fame.

The song that I present today is a mujra dance song, being performed on screen by Laxmi Chhaya. There is an assortment of audience, as we regularly get to see in most mujra dance songs in films. I can clearly identify three of them. Wasti and Ajit are sitting together on a white sofa, and the bespectacled and balding Haroon is on a chair next to Ajit. The song is the regular mujra type choreography, with the dancer complaining that she has wasted her youth getting entangled with “you”, the addressal of “you” here being directed towards any of the many males sitting in the audience.

‘Patanga’ is a social film, produced under the banner of KR Films, Bombay and is directed by Kedar Kapoor. The list of actors reads as – Shashi Kapoor, Vimmi, Ajit, Rajendra Nath, Sajjan, Vasti, Ashok Kapoor, Lakshmi Chhaya, Zeb Rehman, Jagdish Raj, Ram Mohan, Leela Mishra, Praveen Pal, Geeta, Ameena Bai, Ram Avtar, Shekhar Purohit, Prem, Shiva Chandra, Ravindra Kumar, Haroon, Lal, Nasir, Balram, Santosh, and Rajkumar.

Interesting side note here that this is third film of actress Vimmi, who appeared in only 5 films during her short career that lasted from 1967 (debut in the film ‘Hamraaz’) to 1974 (‘Vachan’ being her last film).

The film has 8 songs. As mentioned above, after this post, we now have just one more song remaining for this film. Of the eight songs, four are from the pen of Neeraj, three by Hasrat Jaipuri and one penned by Indeewar. This song is from the pen of Neeraj.

The music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. Yes, remembering Jaikishan today, on his remembrance day today. He passed away on 12th September in 1971. Interesting to note that this film was certified by the Censor Board on 20th August, 1971. It is possible that this film was just released, or maybe even released after, the passing away of Jaikishan.

The lyrics of this song have been sent in by dear Avinash ji.

And so, the penultimate song of ‘Patanga’ of 1971 – a run of the mill mujra performance as demanded by the formula.

taare na dikhe to kabhi karo naalikh
o babu tel malish
karalo boot polish
o babu tel malish
karalo boot polish

phera jo haath laga aisa bhala
rota jo aaya wohi hansta chala
phera jo haath laga aisa bhala
rota jo aaya wohi hansta chala
are dekho idhar joota magar
ik baar to chhoone do yahi hai gujaarish

o babu tel maalish
karaa lo boot polish
o baabu tel maalish
karaa lo boot polish
