Ye dil na hota bechaara
Posted on: May 3, 2009
Once S D Burman went to watch the English movie “Bridge on the River Kwai”. There was a musical tune in that movie which Burman da liked very much. He continued to whisle that song the whole day and he made a tune inspired by that music. That tune was used in the song “ye dil na hota bechaara” in the movie “Jewel Thief”.
The song was written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. It was picturised as a “car” song in the movie on Dev Anand. The heroine and her sahelis drive a car and our evergreen hero Dev Saab pops up in front of that car at the beginning of every stanza.
In one stanza in fact, the heroine chases him out to quite a log distance. But by the time the next stanza begins, by which time the heroine must have driven her car quite some distance, Dev Saab is found to be riding in the haystack of a bullock cart ahead of the car ! God only knows if they had bullock carts capable of outrunning cars in those days. I lived through those days and I never could see such bullock carts.

Lyrics
hmm
zu zu zu zu zu zu zu
tidi di di ei
tidi di di ei
Ye dil na hota bechaara
kadam na hote aawaara
jo khoobsoorat koi apna hamsafar hota
ho o o
Ye dil na hota bechaara
kadam na hote aawaara
jo khoobsoorat koi apna hamsafar hota
soona jabse zamaane hain bahaar ke
ham bhi aayen hain raahi banke pyaar ke
soona jabse zamaane hain bahaar ke
ham bhi aayen hain raahi banke pyaar ke
koi na koi bulaayegaa khade hain ham bhi raahon me
Ye dil na hota bechaara
kadam na hote aawaara
jo khoobsoorat koi apna hamsafar hota
arre maana usko nahin main pahchanta
banda uska pataa bhi nahi jaantaa
maana usko nahin mainpahchanta
banda uska pataa bhi nahi jaantaa
milna likha hai to aayegaa
khade hain ham bhi raahon me
Ye dil na hota bechaara
kadam na hote aawaara
jo khoobsoorat koi apna hamsafar hota
uski dhun me padega dukh jhelnaa
seekha haha hamne bhi pattharon se khelna
uski dhun me padega dukh jhelnaa
seekha hamne bhi pattharon se khelna
soorat kabhi to dikhaayega
ham bhi paden hain rahon me
Ye dil na hota bechaara
kadam na hote aawaara
jo khoobsoorat koi apna hamsafar hota
ho ho ho
Ye dil na hota bechaara
kadam na hote aawaara
jo khoobsoorat koi apna hamsafar hota

Majrooh’s lyrics in such situations always had a conversational, naughty tone combined with nice diction – inimitable!

I came across another unreleased song for the movie– Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi. SD Burman was the original composer and he composed the title song for this movie. But as luck would have it he fell sick and ultimately OP Nayyar was roped in to compose the music. He of course gave his music but this song was dropped. This song was never used anywhere.
In 1967 SD Burman gave music for Jewel Thief and he used the same tune for new lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Listen to this song sung by M. Rafi with same music but different lyrics.
