Mahendra Kapoor was one singer who was a B R Chopra loyalist and he was the male playback singer of choice in all the movies made by B R Chopra’s banner.
In these movies Ravi was the music directos and Sahir Ludhianvi the lyricist. Together these three have come up with many memorable songs.
To my mind, “Hamraaz” (1968) was the movie where Mahendra Kapoor enjoyed the finesh hour of his singing career. Just abouit every song in thios movie was a big rage those days, and these songs continue to be popular even today.
Here is one of the songs from this movie. This song “tum agar saath dene ka waada karo” was picturised on Sunil Dutt. This movie had a heroine too, called Vimmi, who hardly had any dialogue or songs in this movie.
The movie had great songs, and all these great songs as well as Vimmi the heroine get disposed off in the early minutes of the song and then the movie becmes a whodunnit ( to Vimmi) thriller.

I have heard people say that Mahendra Kapoor was a poor man’s Rafi, but I am sure he would have been elated to hear people say that. For me, he was nowhere near Rafi saab, but he made a very earnest and honest effort. Some of the songs of his that come to mind and are iconic are from the movie Gumrah.

This is one of my favourite songs.
I like many Sunil Dutt songs.
Somehow he used to carry off songs very well, whether they were sung by Rafi saab or Mahendra Kapoor or Talat Mehmood or Kishore Kumar.
I love the lyrics of this song. Poetry. Very meaningful. Sahir after all.
