Tum jo mil gaye ho

By now I have realised that one should not typecast people. People, if given a chance can surprise us by coming up with performances that one do not normally associate with them.
Take Madan Mohan for instance. He is normally regarded as a ghazal king, especially ghazals sung by Lata.
But that is just a part of Madan Mohan’s repertoire. He could also come up with nice songs of other genre as well, viz playful songs, comedy songs, cabaret song etc.
Here Madan Mohan comes up with a fast, 1970s style song, but without compromising on class and quality. This song is a “car”song where Navin Nischol drives a taxi and Priya Rajwansh is the passenger seated on the back seat. The driver, as is customary in Bollywood movies, cannot drive silently without breaking into a song. So he breaks into a song. And the song is so good that after two paras, we find the lady passenger moving on to the front seat beside the driver, and a briefwhile later, she ius clinging on to the driver.
The song is sung by Rafi and Kaifi Azmi wrote this song.
It is good that cars these days come with music systems, so one need not employ a chauffer who insists on singing while driving.
P.S. Any idea what happens between the driver and his fare after the song ? They were certainly progressing very fast during the song. 😉
PS-This song has a Lata version too. That way, this song is a multiple version song.

Song-Tum jo mil gaye ho (Hanste Zakhm) (1973) Singer-Rafi , Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi , MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
tum jo mil gaye ho
to ye lagtaa hai
ke jahaan mil gayaa
ke jahaan mil gayaa
ek bhatke huye raahi ko
kaarvaan mil gayaa
tum jo mil gaye ho
to ye lagtaa hai
meri kyaa khataa hai, hotaa hai ye bhi
ke zameen se bhi kabhi aasmaan mil gayaa
ke jahaan mil gayaa
hmm hmm hmm hmm
tum jo mil gaye ho to ye lagta hai
ke jahaan mil gaya
ke jahaan mil gaya
tum bhi the khoye khoye, main bhi bujhaa-bujhaa
tum bhi the khoye khoye, main bhi bujhaa-bujhaa
thaa ajnabi zamaanaa apnaa koyi na thaa
thaa ajnabi zamaanaa apnaa koyi na thaa
dil ko jo mil gayaa hai teraa sahaaraa
ik nayi zindagi kaa nishaan mil gayaa
tum jo mil gaye ho
to ye lagta hai
ke jahaan mil gaya
ek bhatke huye raahi ko kaarwaan mil gaya
tum jo mil gaye ho
to ye lagta hai
ke jahaan mil gaya
ke jahaan mil gaya

By the way, the Lata Mangeshkar verse is in the longer 8-minute version of the song.
Also, the story is far more complex… he leaves his home because his father wants him to marry the daughter of the city’s Police Chief. Another daughter of the Police Chief gets kidnapped in her youth and is forced to become a prostitute…who is the passenger…

They say life sometimes imitates art (perhaps in a tragic way). In Hanste Zakhm, the heroine is killed. In real life Priya Rajvansh, the heroine, became the lover of director Chetan Anand. She received his Bombay flat after his death. The courts convicted his two sons from an earlier marriage of murdering her in 1998 to get the flat.
Navin Nischol, the hero, became an alcoholic. Police arrested him after his third wife hung herself in 2006 and blamed him in her suicide note.
Whew!

Translation (with missing lyrics) :
Now that I have found you, it feels as if I have every thing.
Like a lost traveller, reunited with his caravan
do not sit away from me, nor be irritated
please don’t go away after this fortunate meeting
It just happened, what is my fault in it ?
The sky and the earth had to meet some time.
(Tum kya jaane tum kya ho
Ek sureela naghma ho
Bheegi raaton mein masti
Tapte din mein saaya ho
Tum kya jaane tum kya ho
Ab jo aa gaye ho jaane na doonga
Ke mujhe ek haseen meherbaan mil gayaa
Ke jahaan mil gayaa
Mmm mmmmmmm
Mmm mmmmmmm
Tum jo mil gaye ho
To yeh lagtaa hai
Ke jahaan mil gayaa
Ke jahaan mil gayaa )
You have no inkling of what you mean to me
A melody, is what you are
Like a mischief on a rainy, wet night
Cool shade on a hot summer day
So, you have come
I will not let go of you this time
As i have finally found my soul mate
You were lost, there was no light in my life too
had no one to call my own in a world full of strangers
My heart has found a safe anchor in you
It ‘s a new lease of life for me.
Now that I have found you, it feels as if I have every thing.
Like a lost traveller, reunited with his caravan

Thank you NAHM. After going thru’ three randomly searched translation, this was the best !
At family wedding/mehandi event, people will be singing karaoke songs; I picked this one. And was looking for a translation for some people who do not know hindi/urdu.
On a lighter note, how can you not have watched this movie, mr. SQUARECUTATUL ? ! It is available on youtube.
Thank you and love you all 🙂

I think the situation is a bit more complex than you are descibing here … correct me if I am wrong, but as I recall he is the son of a rich father who leaves his palatial home to live in the slums and drives a taxi and falls in love with a prostitute whom he drives to her clients.
Nevertheless, this song is one of the several beautiful songs from this movie. It is actually a ‘duet’ with Lata Mangeshkar singing one verse.
