Na milta gham to barbaadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate

Posted on: May 18, 2009

“Amar” (1954) was a movie starring Dilip Kumar, Nimmi and Madhubala. Few people today may have heard abut this movie. But as happened with many old movies of those days, this movie too has some very nice songs.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is “na milta gham to barbaadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate” . What remarkable lyrics ! It is sheer poetry, that too of a very high calibre. What shayari Shakeel Badayuni has come up with in this song !

Music is composed by Naushad. This song was sung by Lata and the song was picturised on Nimmi and Dilip Kumar. It is indeed a gem from the past.

Song-Na milta gham to barbadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate (Amar) (1954) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

ho, tamannaa lut gayi phir bhi tere dam se muhabbat hai
mubaarak ghair ko khushiyaan mujhe, gham se muhabbat hai
na miltaa gham to barbaadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate
na miltaa gham to barbaadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate
agar duniyaa chaman hoti, to veeraane kahaan jaate

chalo achchhaa huaa apnon mein koyi ghair to niklaa
ji, koyi ghair to niklaa
agar hote sabhi apne, to begaane kahaan jaate
to begaane kahaan jaate

duaayen do muhabbat hamne mitkar tumko sikhlaadi
duaayen do muhabbat hamne mitkar tumko sikhlaadi
mohabbat tumko sikhlaadi
na jalti shamaa mehfil mein to parwaane kahaan jaate
to parwaane kahaan jaate
agar duniyaa chaman hoti, to veeraane kahaan jaate

tumhin ne gham ki daulat di badaa ehsaan farmaayaa,
badaa ehsaan farmaayaa
zamaane bhar ke aage haath phailaane kahaan jaate
na miltaa gham to barbaadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate

I think hindi movies gave poets an opportunity to live through their art for some years, and ghazals like this are a true “gift” to cinema, every word is loaded with meaning.

What other cinema has done so much for poetry?

And a pity that it no longer seems to be the case.

a correction: the word ‘mehfil’ is missing in ‘na jalti shamaa mehfil mein to parwaane kahaan jaate’ thanks!

This song is brilliant. Like some songs belong to music directors, some to the singers, this song belongs to the lyricist- Shakeel Badayuni . such beautiful lines that touches the heart.

Hi Atul

Your site is a treasure of hindi cinema .

Many of us are no doubt just interested in golden oldies but unfortunately not everyone is conversant with Hindi/Urdu songs lyrics esp as they are in poetry style.

It would be tremendously helpful to us if you could provide english translations of these awesome golden oldies and can’t tell you how much we would really appreciate it understanding the real meanings /message of these original songs.

Please try your best

Many thanks

Hassam
