Mere piyaa chhede jiyaa

“Chacha Chawdhary” (1953) was one of the earlier movies of Madan Mohan as a music director.
This movie is interesting in the sense that Madan Mohan in this movie preferred Asha Bhonsle over Lata for singing female solos. All the female solos in this movie have been sung by Asha Bhonsle. Lata has only figured in duets.
And Asha Bhonsle has done a superb job. In those days, when Asha Bhonsle had yet to find her feet, this opportunity was a big break for her.
This song “mere piyaa chhed jiyaa” is a very sweet and soothing song. Here Asha Bhonsle has sung in a very soft voice which is almost Talat Mahmood like. The song is picturised on Shashikala and on a man who could be either Kamal Mehra or Raja Paranjpe ( can anyone tell me who he is ?).
The song in fact is so soothing that at the end of the song, Shashikala herself falls asleep. Yes, that way it is like a lori (lullaby) to help yourself fall asleep. 😉 Though it can be called a chaayageet song as well. Incidentally there was no chaayageet programme those days, for the simple reason that there was no Vividh Bharati radio station those days !

The song is picturised on Shashikala and Kamal Mehra.Raja Paranjape played the lead role of Chacha Chowdhari.He is seen briefly in the opening scene of this song(with a beard).The other person seen in this song is Banerjee,who played Shashkals’s father in the movie.Raja Paranjape was in double role.
This was a remake of the immensely popular landmark movie in Marathi ” PEDGAONCHE SHAHANE ” acted and directed by Raja Paranjape.

After 50s Lata Mangeshkar had monopoly of singing all female songs and majority of music directory never crossed her path.But some like Madan Mohan and O P Nayyar were brave not to folow the trend.This song is an example of how sublime Asha can be.
Another example is a song from Baadbaan, “thokrake tere duniya”
would like to see in dvd if there any who has it PLEASE.
