Nineteen fiftysix, nineteen fiftyseven
Posted on: June 9, 2009
I have listened to this song in the past, but I was not aware which movie this song was from. This song, which is a party song and was picturised to welcome the then new year of 1959, is from “Anaadi” (1959).
This song is sung by Manna Dey and Lata. It is picturised on Raj Kapoor and Helen. Helen in a Raj Kapoor movie ? One always discovers new facts while watching Bollywood songs.
Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.
Is it not interesting to note that 1959 was exactly 50 years ago ? How time flies !
song-Nineteen fiftysix , nineteen fiftyseven(Anaadi) (1959) Singers-Manna Dey, Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

kismat ka saanchaa badla
aankhen to kholo zaraa
lala ho kahaan
lalalalarala lalallalaliralala
lalalalarala lalallalaliralala
ho ho he he
taj niraale raaz niraale
jeewan ke saare saaz niraale
mehfil mehfil ghoom
dharti ke jaaye ambar pe chaaye
phaila ke baahen chanda bulaaye
aa taaron ko choom

I found a better version of this video when I was searching for this song for a post of mine (check it here: http://inspirethoughts.livejournal.com/47336.html although you might have to add me to see the protected entry…) a while ago:

@squarecutatul: Precisely, that’s what I had mentioned in my post too in a different way. Lyricist Shailendra had predicted what future could/would be with regards to fashion…that kapde gahtenge ur bhi gahtenge!

All I can say for this song is “Yes, definitely the fashions have changed, and the kapde have become less (ghat gaye!), nakhoon bhi badh gaye and chehre pe naqli chehra is also here now (face lifts!)” Shailendra must have been blessed with the gift of second sight!
I have memories of watching this movie with my parents, and this was one of their favorite movies. My father still hums songs from this movie, so I have a copy of it in my collection. Thanks for the great memories, Atul!
