Aaja dil ko nahin hai karaar

Posted on: June 18, 2009

Yesterday I had posted a song sung by Ashok Kumar for himself in the movie “Najma” (1943). In fact, those days actors had to sing their own songs, so only those persons made it as actors who were good looking and could sing passably well at least.

Here is another song from “Najma”. Here Ashok Kumar sings for himself again. But he is not alone. Sitara Devi, the heroine of this movie, sings too, and it is quite an interesting song too.

So here is this rare gem from more than six decades ago.

PS- One line sung by Sitara Devi is not clear to me but I have got 95% of the lyrics right here. It is the line which I have provisionally written as (ho na jaaye kahin naakaam) ?, . Can someone tell me what is this line ?

Song-Aaja dil ko nahin hai karaar (Najma) (1943) Ashok Kumar, Sitara Devi, Lyrics-Anjum Pilibhiti, MD-Rafiq Ghaznavi

Lyrics

jab yaad teri aa jaati hai
ik tees se dil mein hoti hai
main chupke chupke rota hoon
jab duniya saari soti hai
kisko sunaaun gham ki kahaani
kisko sunaaun gham ki kahaani
koi nahin gham khaar
koi nahin gham khaar
aajaa
aajaa
dil ko nahin hai karaar
karta hai koi intezaar
jaan se bezaar
jaan se bezaar

haule haule
haule haule
ulfat me rakhna kadam kadam
ghir hi na jaaye kahin naa dam aji dam
rasta hai dushwaar dushwaar
rasta hai dushwaar
haule haule
kyaa yaad kisi ki aayi hai
kyaa yaad kisi ki aayi hai
zardi munh par chaayi hai
haay haay
zardi munh par chaayi hai
hmm hmm
aansoo poncho aankhon se apni
aansoo poncho aankhon se apni
gham na karo sarkaar sarkaar
gham na karo sarkaar sarkaar
haule haule
haule haule
ulfat me rakhna kadam kadam
ghir hi na jaaye kahin naa dam aji dam
rasta hai dushwaar
bahut dushwaar
rasta hai dushwaar
haule haule

Trust Greta to notice the ear-rings ! 🙂

Atul, I tried 7-8 times to listen to that one line – and I just could not get it. Not clear at all. I think it is something like “dil na ho jaaye kahin nakaam” or something like that. The second time it comes, the lip movement is more visible. I tried to use that but still could not get it. (:

Sitara Devi in fact was an accomplished Kathak dancer as well. I recall reading her interview in some magazine in 1970s.

I too love 30s-40s songs and am fond of this one.

I think that line is: kho na jaaye kahin na dam, aji dam

Doesn’t that make more sense? BTW, I managed to jot down lyrics of some great songs from Village Girl and Zeenat (you can’t get their lyrics online) Will give you if required, please add one more song from this film – Id Milo Id by Amirbai Karnataki, Mumtaz Ali and Parul Ghosh, the actresses are Kantakumari, Veena, etc.

Atul ji,

The starting verse also needs correction. The first line starts in between (someone has not been careful to edit the video). A more complete version is available on YouTube at the following URL – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GarGkuhH1Uk

The first verse should read
“jab yaad teri aa jaati hai
ik tees se dil mein hoti hai
mein chupke chupke rota hoon
jab duniya saari soti hai”

The 7th (and 8th line) should read
“koi nahin hai gham khaar”

The line written in brackets
“(ho na jaaye kahin naakaam) ?”

– I could not catch the first word. It should read
” na jaaye kahin na dam, aji dam”

Correction: A possible word that fits in this line is

“ghir hi na jaaye kahin na dam, aji dam”

In local parlance of north (punjabi-urdu mix) “dam ghirna” is feeling suffocated.

Apologies, I forget to complete the post 🙂

The song title should be
“Jab Yaad Teri Aa Jaati Hai”

Also, an interesting additional information.

Najma (1943) is the first production of Mehboob Studios.

But Mehboob Khan made Roti (1942) before.

Vidur ji

You correctly point out that Mehboob Khan made ‘Roti’ in 1942. However, it was made under the banner of National Studios. After Roti, he established his own Mehboob Studios, and Najma was the first movie released under under this banner.

Dear Atul ji,
I chanced upon this song today. A rare and beautiful song indeed!
Since the unclear line follows – haule haule ulfat me rakhna kadam kadam,
the next line appears to be “tezi me jaaye kahin naa dam aji dam” and it appears more meaningful too.
You may like to listen and decide.

Kiran
