It is a very well known song from an obscure movie called “Samrat Chandragupta” (1958). Considering that this movie was a historical/ mythological fare, it must have been a B grade movie. Kalyanji was the music director of this movie. This must have been his debut movie as a music director. Later he roped in his younger brother Anandji to form their music director partnership of Kalyanji Anandji in subsequent movies.
This song must have helped Kalyanji get a foothold in the industry since this song became almost an iconic song. It was written by Bharat Vyas.
This song was sung by Lata and Rafi and it was picturised on Nirupa Roy and Bharat Bhooshan. For many movie goers, who are used to seeing Nirupa Roy as a long suffering mother of Amitabh Bachchan in movies of 1970s, it may come as a surprise to know that “Maa bhi kabhi heroine thi” ( Mother too was a heroine in the past).
