Do akalmand huye fikrmand
Posted on: June 25, 2009
Here is a fun song from a lesser known movie called “Akalmand”(1966). This was a movie produced by I S Johar, and as was his wont his movie used to have a light hearted look at things. So in this movie he ties up with Kishore Kumar.
This song is picturised on Kishore Kumar and I S Johar. It is a truck song. Kishore Kumar sings for himself and Rafi sings for I S Johar. Can one see a resemblance from the earlier song fro “Bewaqoof” (1960) that was sung by Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar ?
Aziz Kashmiri is the lyricist and O P Nayyar is the music director.
PS- One can notice the voice of Mahendra Kapoor appearing out of nowhere in the last stanza and then disappearing all of a sudden too. I wonder why is that. My theory is that after the recording of this song, O P Nayyar must have needed a retake, but in the meanwhile he has grpwn his difference with Rafi ( that lasted several yeras) and so O P Nayyar had no option but to record that portion is some other voice, and he recorded this portion in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice.
In subsequent O P Nayyar movies, viz “Kismat” and “Sambandh”, Mahendra Kapoor was the male playback singer and he did a decent job, singing in Rafi style.

Lyrics
do akalmand
huye fikrmand
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani
do akalmand
huye fikrmand
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani
kahin mahal hai kahin jhonpdi
ise sar kahen use khopdi
tan se jo nangaa hai wo mill ki jaan hai
kapda banaayaa hogaa laakhon thaan hai
khud ui me khadaa
do akalmand
huye fikrmand
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani
suno darling
ye hai India
zaraa come near
tujhe doon bataa
jaan se hain pyaari meri jaan rotiyaan
hoti hain ghareeb ka imaan rotiyaan
karz hai kisi pe ye kahaan
do akalmand
huye fikrmanad
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani
milo inse bhi
ye jo hain khade
suno lalaji kahaan chal diye
arre galle ko dabaaye huye mote pet mein
mauka paake bech dega tigune rate mein
chahehgaa gareebon ka buraa
haay
do akalmand
huye fikrmanad
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani
kahin dharm hai kahin dushmani
insaaniyat kahaan kho gayi
haaye maare gaye paapiyon ki baat maan ke
apne khench taan ke
upar waale dono se bachaa
bachaa
do akalmand
huye fikrmand
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani
do akalmand
huye fikrmanad
ab soch rahe kya karna hai dilbarjaani

Atul ji,
As I reviewed this song, it seemed that the sound track had skipped at some places, as the metre and the words were not sounding correct in four lines. I checked the video online and realized that the video clip is converted from a copy of the original reel that may have some damage or cuts for repair. I then compared this song with the audio file in my collection (recorded from the original 78 rpm records), and found the following corrections.
In the first antara, the line
khud ui me khadaa
should be
khud hai langoti mein khada.
In the second antara, the line
karz hai kisi pe ye kahaan
should be
sach hai kisi ne ye kahaa
In the fourth antara, the lines
haaye maare gaye paapiyon ki baat maan ke
apne khench taan ke
should be
haaye maare gaye panditon ki baan maan ke
mulla ji ne faans liyaa kheench taan ke
I have the original audio clip and can share it, if required.
Appreciate for you to make the corrections.

Oops, one typo in my post.
Fourth antara correction should be,
haaye maare gaye panditon ki baat maan ke
mulla ji ne faans liyaa kheench taan ke

That’s precisely why Mahendra Kapoor was brought in to sing the fourth stanza again. The lyrics of the fourth stanza which Rafi saab sang had words which were objectionable to few, which were later rewritten to change ‘panditon’ to ‘paapiyon’ and ‘mullaji ne’ to ‘apno ne’. Maybe Rafi saab was not available to give another take, but the real reason for the retake was the lyrics.
