“Love In Tokyo” (1966) was a movie that came two years after the Tokyo Olympics, and it showed Indian viewers some stunning scenes that left Indians gasping. It was diffucult to believe that Japan, a country which was on the same boat as India just two decades ago had taken such rapid strides in just one generation.
Here in this song, Asha Parekh is performing a semi classical dance and that is being telecast on TV-that too colour TV in stunning colours. This scene must have left Indian movie goers rub their eyes in disbelief. In those days, TV in India was like UFO, people talked of sighting it, but not too many people had actually seen it, and those who had seen a TV had seen only black and white TV. In India, colour TV transmission began only in 1982.
Coming to the song itself, this song was sung by Lata and picturised on Asha Parekh. Did anyone notice that Asha Parekh changes her dress after every stanza ? In the first stanza, she wears orange, in the second stanza, it is white, and as I was half expecting her to appear in green, she appears in blue in the third stanza.
This song is created by the usual suspects, viz Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

Lyrics
aaa aaa aaa
koyi matwaalaa aayaa mere dwaare
koyi matwaalaa aayaa mere dwaare
ankhiyon se kar gayaa ajab ishaare
ankhiyon se kar gayaa ajab ishaare
koyi matwaalaa, aayaa mere dwaare
koyi matwaalaa, aayaa mere dwaare
jab se gayaa hai bholaa bachpan
naina chanchal natkhat hai man
ab nahin kuch bhi bas me hamare
ab nahin kuch bhi bas me hamare
o
koyi matwaalaa aayaa mere dwaare
koyi matwaalaa aayaa mere dwaare
ankhiyon se kar gayaa ajab ishaare
ankhiyon se kar gayaa ajab ishaare
koyi matwaalaa, aayaa mere dwaare
raat raat bhar neend na aaye
bin chaahe wo yaad aa jaaye
kaatoon ratiyaan gin gin taare
kaatoon ratiyaan gin gin taare
aaa
koyi matwaalaa aayaa mere dwaare
koyi matwaalaa aayaa mere dwaare
ankhiyon se kar gayaa ajab ishaare
ankhiyon se kar gayaa ajab ishaare
koyi matwaalaa, aayaa mere dwaare
koyi matwaalaa, aayaa mere dwaare

The first time I saw a TV in my life was when I visited my uncle in Delhi in 1978. It was a black-and-white set. I remember seeing 3 Sunday movies on that TV (Doordarshan). Munimji, Sohni Mahiwal and a third movie.
The next time I saw a TV was in 1984 just in time for the LA Olympics. This was a colour TV. I cannot describe the experience. 🙂
