It is always refreshing to listen to female singers other than the usual ones. But is is not always possible of other singers to get past the monopoly of the few female singers.
Here is a memorable ghazal from a forgotten movie called “Shagoon” (1964). In this movie Kanwaljeet and Waheeda Rehman had played lead roles. Later the two were married to each other.
This particular song is not picturised on Waheeda Rehman. Rather this song is picturised as a piano song on someone called Nivedita. She sings this song while Kanwaljeet is seen drinking and Waheeda Rehman is seen feeling miserable at his drinking.
This song is sung by Jagjeet Kaur.Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics and Khayyam was the music director. It helped that Jagjeet Kaur was the wife of Khayyam. He would also use her voice in a few more songs in future, viz in “Kabhie Kabhie”, for instance.
PS- I was unable to identify a word that Jagjit Kaur sings towards the end of the song. I have replaced with ???. Someone with better ears ( as well as better understanding of Urdu) may kindly inform me what the missing word could be.
(Note-Now I find that the missing word was “Kaif”)

i also think that the word is shai not kaif. because it sounds like that and the meaning also fits better in here.

the correct word must be ‘KHASS’, not ‘kaif’. Because Kaif is a Arabic word, it’s mean ‘HOW”, not suitable.
So the lyrics should be as “badi khaas hai agar, uski pashemaanI mujhe de do”

Nivedita must be one russian actress, I remember reading one article on her, in some film magazine.But I am not sure about that fact.
Further she has acted also in Dulal guha`s “Dharti kahe pukaar ke” opposite Sanjeev kumar(Lata mangeshkar`s song”diye jalaaye pyar ke…baras bheetaake aayee hai, ye shaam zindagi ke”was picturised on nivedita)

Nivedita`s name has been credited as “Nivedita salome” in the credit cards of 1965 released Hindi film “Tu hi meri zindagi”(produced by “Filmalaya”), she has acted opposite Deb mukherjee in that film, I have seen her in one song of that film alongwith Deb mukherjee.(songs lyrics:”Salaam lo ,salam lo”)

The meanings are as below,
1) One correction to this line; second word is “shai” and not “kaif”.
“wo dil jo maine maangaa thaa magar gairon ne paayaa thaa
badi shai hai agar, uski pashemaani mujhe de do”
“I had once begged for your heart but it was endowed on someone else. It will be a valued gift for me if you can give to me even the regrets and repentances of that heart.”
2) “Nigehbaan” is a protector, a care giver.
“main dekhoon to sahi, duniyaa tumhen kaise sataati hai
koyi din ke liye, apni nigahbaani mujhe de do”
Let me see how this world and its people bother or disturb you, let me be your protector for some time.

Thanks Sudhir for such a wonderful explanation.. This is one of my best song.. beautifully composed by Khayyamji well written by Sahirji and what a voice of Jagjit Kaurji… feels like this song shouldnt end.. feels like… if I can help Nevedita, the singing character in the film, by sharing her pain

Sorry, missed adding the reference for this.
I refer to the printed works of Sahir, titled “Kulliyaat-e-Sahir” translated and edited by Nazma Khatoon and published by Saral Prakashan, Delhi. This print reference has “shai” as the correct word.
It appears that most online references (I did check many) take off from one original error made by someone, and simply perpetuate it. 🙂

I too would like to knoiw much more about Nivedite. From what I have noticed in movies as “Tu hi meri zindagi”, Dharti kahe Phukarke” and “Sabse bara rupaiya” I drew the following comclusions:
– she reallly plays the piano
– she is a (roman) catholic
– she is of Portugese origin. So maybe born in Goa.

Dear Atul,
Libi Rana is the original name of actress Nivedita who bid goodbye to movies with B R Chopra’s Dhund. Writer and critic Khalid Mohammed has written about her in one of his columns titled – Kahan Gaye Woh Log. She lives in Mumbai but does not want to be known as an actress – it appears so.
Khalid had met her once in Taj Mahal Hotel Bookshop. With great reluctance she agreed that she was indeed Nivedita the actress. She also informed him something very significant – that you can’t continue to be in films unless you want your life to be like that of a sunset boulevard. A significant statement. She did very few movies and tyhat shows she wasn’t interested in making it big.

Badi means “bad” (like…in Ai Malik tere bande hum, Neki par chale aur badi se Tale), Shai means “gift”, Pashemani means ‘regrets’
Badi shai hai agar, uski pashemani mujhe dedo. If ‘bad’ is the ‘gift’ you get, give me your ‘regrets’ (don’t keep regret to yourself).

Since childhood when I was 11-12 , had heard this song,from then its fit in my mind the correct word is SHAI,as many of the writers has written above SHAI is urdu word,means IT WILL BE GREAT THING IF YOU CAN GIVE ME,THE REGRETS ,AND ILLFEELING OF YOUR HEART,{WHICH ARE HIDDEN IN YOUR HEART}

Ribi Rana as was her real name, her “Reel” name being Nivedita. She comes from Dehradum and I think she won some beauty contest in the late 50’s. From all the comments above and those I have seen elsewhere on Nivedita, it’s not so much her strikingly beautiful face but also the song which matches her so well. And she used to play the piano in real life too. Add to this Jagjeet Kaur and Khayyam and you have a cocktail of a memorable video song.

Listen to the song. She says: “kaif”. The word fits in the context of the song. Kaif means delight, joy or high spirits while pashemani means regret, shame, disgrace, repentance. Pashemani is an antonym of kaif.
If I was to write this verse, I’d say: “Inayat hai agar, apni pashemani mujhe de do” (if you have the grace, please let me take your disgrace).
