Adaayen jab hon latkedaar

This is a song from a 1958 movie called “Khota Paisa”. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. If one listens to the song, it appears a quintessential O P Nayyar tune.
When one looks at the details ( which are difficult to find out, incidentally), then it turns out that the music director is not O P Nayyar but Madan Mohan ! And the lyricist is Rajinder Krishan.
Those were the days when Madan Mohan had yet to carve a niche as king of ghazals. In any case, those were the days when O P Nayyar was the hottest music director in the industry and so Madan Mohan may have decided to ape his style.
And this is a lovely O P Nayyarish tune too.

I had an exchange with a Madan Mohan fan about him being influenced by O P Nayyar, but he argued that the similarity between them is because both came from Punjab and had the Punjabi rhythm in them. Madan Mohan composed great gazals such as “Yun hasaraton ke daag” and “Un Ko yeh shikayat hai” for Adalat that also came out in 1958. That film also had Dupatta Mera Malmal Ka, which has the O P Nayyar feel. However, I am less sure now about the validity of the claim that he “aped” O P Nayyar. Perhaps, both happened to use the same style at that time. The main difference is that O P Nayyar had one dominant style whereas Madan Mohan had a wide range as you have shown in the Sanjog or Chacha Zindabad songs of that period and his songs from later years.
