Intazaar aur abhi aur abhi aur abhi

Posted on: July 5, 2009

Meena Kumari debuted in early 1950 and played happy roles most of the time. Many of these movies are lovely family entertainers where she would typically act with Kishore Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Daisy Irani etc.

It was towards the end of 1950s that she first began to act in tragic roles. Once she did that, she could not turn back . For her reel life as well as real life became tragic.

“Chaar Dil Chaar Raahein” (1959) was one of the first movies where Meena Kumari is seen singing melancholic songs.

Here is one such song from “Chaar Dil Chaar Raahein”. It is sung by Lata. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and Anil Biswas composed the music.

This mujra song is one of the earliest such songs picturised on Meena Kumari.

Song-Intzaar aur abhi aur abhi (Chaar Dil Chaar Raahein) (1959) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

jab main kahti hoon, ke ek roz huzoor aayenge
to dil ye kahtaa hai, ke ek din to zaroor aayenge
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intazaar aur

saanjh ki laali, sulag sulag kar ban gayi kaali dhool
aaye naa baalam bedardi, main chunti rah gayi phool
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intazaar aur

rain bhayi, bojhal ankhiyaan mein chubhne lage taare
des mein main pardesan ho gayi, jab se piyaa sidhaare
jab se piyaa sidhaare
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intazaar aur

bhor bhayi, par koyi naa aayaa, sooni sej basaane
taare doobe, deepak bujh gaye
taare doobe, deepak bujh gaye
raakh hue parwaane
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intzaar aur abhi,aur abhi,aur abhi
intazaar aur

This song is picturised on Nimmi and not Meena Kumari.

This song is written in an unusual pattern. The opening couplet and the refrain of the song are in Hindi-Urdu mix while the antaras are in pure Hindi.

Recently, I came to know that the first two antaras of the song have been taken from Sahir Ludhinavi’s poem ‘ saanj ki laali sulaj sulaj kar….’ which was published in his book ‘Parchhaayiaan’ (1956). Surprisingly, the poem is written in pure Hindi. The full poem is reproduced below:

So, songs of ‘Chitralekha’ (1964) is not Sahir Ludhianvi’s first tryst with pure Hindi poems.
