Khaali peeli khaali peeli… kaahe ko bom maartaa hai
Posted on: July 10, 2009
As special songs go, this song is very special indeed. Let me enumerate why this song is special.
This is one of the first great comedy songs where Kishore Kumar acted as well as sang the song. This is from a movie called ” Tamasha”. Though a great comedy song, this song is not all that easy to find out. Fortunately, some kind soul has uploaded this great, but rare, song and we are now privileged to watch this song.
The song is picturised on Kishore Kumar, Dev Anand and Meena Kumari. If this song is any indication, this movie is a great romantic comedy like “Miss Mary” which came 5 years later. In other words, this movie could well be the template for “Miss Mary” which also starred Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari and there it was Gemini Ganeshan instead of Dev Anand.
This song must be the first song which used slang lingo of Bombay as spoken on the streets of Bombay rather than the sophisticated language of mushaayaras (poetry sessions). And this song was written by Bharat Vyas, who is typically known for using rather more sophisticated words as he mainly wrote songs for historical/ mythological movies. And what a superb song he has written. It is extremely witty, funny and entertaining.
What about the music director ? It is another person in an unfamiliar role. Manna Dey, who is mainly known as a singer of serious semi classical songs, is the music director of this tapori song.
For this blog, this song is the 1600th song. I could not have thought of a better song than this song to post as the 1600th song of this blog.
Let us all salute the genius of Kishore Kumar, Bharat Vyas and Manna Dey for creating this precious gem of a song.
And I take this opportunity to thank all my readers and visitors. Please keep your encouragement coming. Your love and encouragement keeps me going, Your comments, suggestions , farmaishes etc keep me motivated. So please continue to shower your blessing on this blog so that this blog can keep bringing cheers to all its followers.

What a delightful song, for the 1600th position! I have never heard this one before! Now that you are so good at finding all these lost songs, I still hope that you or someone here can find the children’s song, which was a parody of various songs, and used to play in November/Dec 1962 or 1963. It was about the lion which was tricked into seeing its own reflection in the well, and then it jumped in to fight with its reflection. One part of it went: Poonchwale, tera jawab nahin …, then Yahoo…oo..chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe, and Zara saamne to aao chhaliye … and I think even Ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar … was in there. Does anyone at all remember this?
