More ang lag jaa baalmaa

I have listened to this song many a times, but I had no idea which movie this song was from.
This time, I researched this song, and I found out, much to my surprise, that this song was from “Mera Naam Joker” (1970). I wonder just how many songs this movie had. There must have been about a dozen songs in this movie that were written by 8 lyricists and 6 singers under the music direction of Shankar Jaikishan.
This song was written by Shailendra and it was sung by Asha Bhonsle.
I have heard this song many a times and this time I saw the picturisation too. The picturisation is archtypical Raj Kapoor movie picturisation, where a well endowed pretty lady wearing a wet sari and nothing else is suffering from love pangs. After all, it is rainy season which is India’s answer to Valentine day.
This is not just a sensuous song, the picturisation and Asha Bhonsle’s voice makes it a somewhat erotic song as well. any idea who is this lady. I recall that this movie had a few Soviet Union actors as well. This lady could well be one of them.
PS-This lady is Padmini ! She looks so different in this movie, at least to me and so she had me fooled in this song.
Song-Ang lag jaa baalmaa (Mera Naam Joker)(1970) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shailendra,MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
aaa aaa
aaa
ang lag jaa baalmaa
haay more ang lag jaa baalmaa

larje moraa jiyaa
aise mein tu na jaa
more ang lag jaa baalmaa
more ang lag jaa baalmaa
pagla ye man mora

isse toohi samjhaa baalmaa
haay more ang lag jaa baalmaa

larje mora jiyaa
aise mein tu na jaa
more ang lag jaa baalmaa
o more ang lag jaa baalmaa
ang lag jaa baalmaa

This was the first movie of my life that I actually saw in a movie theater.
Possibly the most famous promo poster of the movie was from this song – scene at 3:50 of this video, where Padmini sits down next to Raj.
Although the movie flopped miserably, the songs are lovely – each one of them, including this song.

Yes actress is Padmin. She was also in another RK movie; Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai.
She was trained classical dancers, and used to live in NJ running a dance school.

This was the first song of “Mera Naam Joker” to be played on Binaca Geetmala in July 1970. However, the other songs of the film soon overshadowed this one in the countdown and this was long before the film itself was released.
